Use Chrome DevTools to capture either the visible viewport or the full product page, then repeat at the desktop and mobile-emulated viewport sizes relevant to your audit. Record the exact URL, capture time, viewport, and visible page state so another reviewer can understand what the screenshot shows. A screenshot documents one observed state; by itself, it does not establish how the page appeared generally or continuously.
Choose the right screenshot for the audit question
Chrome DevTools provides two useful capture types: a screenshot of the current viewport and a full-size screenshot that includes content beyond the visible screen. Use the first to document what a shopper can see without scrolling; use the second when the audit concerns page content across the full product detail page. - Viewport capture: records the currently visible browser area, including the current scroll position and on-screen state.
- Full-size capture: includes page content outside the viewport, which can help review page structure and content lower down.
Neither format answers every question. For example, a full-size image is useful for documenting page extent, but a viewport image is more direct evidence of the initial screen seen at a stated viewport size.
Capture the product page in Chrome DevTools
- Open the product detail page. Keep the exact URL for your audit notes. Before capturing, decide which page state matters: for example, a selected size or color, an expanded details panel, or a visible offer. Record any interaction that changes what appears.
- Open DevTools. In Chrome, open the browser menu and choose More tools > Developer tools, or use the browser’s DevTools keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
- Choose a viewport condition. For responsive review, open the Device Toolbar in DevTools and set the viewport or choose a device preset. Chrome describes the Device Toolbar as a way to resize the viewport and test content reflow in its accessibility reference. Record the dimensions or preset used.
- Set the page state. Scroll to the relevant area for a viewport capture, or select the variant and open any content needed to show the condition under review. Note those choices rather than assuming the image makes them clear.
- Capture the screenshot. Open the DevTools command menu and run Capture screenshot for the current viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. Chrome’s labels or behavior may vary by version.
- Repeat at the other target viewport. If comparing desktop and mobile layouts, change the viewport in the Device Toolbar and repeat the same interaction sequence where possible. Label mobile emulation as an emulated viewport, not as a test on a particular physical phone.
- Save context with the image. Record the exact page URL, date and time, viewport dimensions or preset, capture type, and relevant interaction state. These are practical reproducibility notes, not an official legal checklist.
Make comparisons fair and findings precise
When comparing product pages, offers, or before-and-after designs, align the capture conditions or state where they differ. Differences in viewport, page extent, selected variant, expanded content, or time can change what an image shows.

- Viewport: use the same dimensions or named preset where the comparison requires it, and say whether the image is desktop or mobile emulation.
- Page extent: distinguish a current-viewport capture from a full-size page capture.
- Page state: note selected variants, expanded details, consent prompts, or other visible interactions.
- Time and URL: retain the exact address and capture time because product content and offers can change.
- Observation versus conclusion: state what is visibly present separately from claims that require supporting evidence beyond the screenshot.
For audit findings about advertising claims, the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) Code says: “All descriptions, claims and comparisons, which relate to matters of objectively ascertainable fact, should be capable of substantiation.” It also says: “Advertisements shall neither distort facts nor mislead the consumer by means of implications or omissions.” These provisions support evidence-backed reporting; they do not prescribe a screenshot format or, by themselves, determine whether a page complies. Preserve the original and describe its limits
If you annotate or redact an image for a report, label that version as edited and retain an unaltered original when it supports a finding. Do not present a screenshot as proof that a page always appeared that way: it records a page state under the captured conditions. The cited guidance does not establish a universal evidence-retention rule or a legal admissibility standard; requirements depend on the purpose and applicable jurisdiction.

Keep India’s ecommerce rule timing clear
The Department of Consumer Affairs lists the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 and a 2026 amendment on its official legislation page. A government announcement dated 10 September 2026 says the amendment is to commence on 1 January 2027 and identifies changes concerning grievance handling, search results and sponsored listings, price reductions, dark patterns, seller disclosures, and product information; see the announcement. Before that commencement date, do not describe the announced provisions as already in force. For a particular audit, check the operative legal text and whether it applies to the business and issue under review. This capture guide is not legal advice.
