Use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true, style: '...' }) to capture the whole scrollable page while applying CSS only for the screenshot. For a visual-regression test, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot({ fullPage: true, stylePath: './screenshot.css' }) instead. The direct screenshot option takes CSS text; the test assertion option takes a stylesheet path.
Capture a full page with inline CSS
In a Playwright script, pass fullPage: true to capture beyond the current viewport. Add CSS in the style option to temporarily change what appears in the screenshot, for example to hide a volatile iframe:

});page.screenshot() returns the image buffer; path is optional and saves the image to a file. The CSS is a string containing stylesheet text, not a filename. Playwright applies screenshot styling for the capture rather than changing the page’s lasting styles. Hiding content changes what the image depicts, so use selectors that match the purpose of the capture.
Use a stylesheet file in a Playwright Test assertion
If the goal is visual regression testing, use the Playwright Test assertion API. Put the temporary rules in a CSS file, then pass its path as stylePath:

The assertion captures and compares against a stored expectation, retrying until two consecutive screenshots match. That helps with transient rendering, but does not guarantee pixel-identical images across different environments.
Choose the right screenshot method and style option

The screenshot style and assertion stylePath options are documented as added in Playwright v1.41. If a project uses an older release, check its installed-version API documentation before relying on them. Make visual-regression screenshots more repeatable
A screenshot can change even when the page code has not: Playwright’s guidance identifies operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors. Run baseline creation and comparison in aligned environments when pixel-level consistency matters.
Screenshot-time CSS can hide known dynamic regions, but it should not conceal changes the test is meant to detect. Playwright Test also provides assertion controls for animation handling, caret behavior, masks, scale, and pixel-difference tolerances. Set them according to the visual behavior you intend to test rather than loosening comparisons indiscriminately. The assertion’s consecutive-capture stabilization does not remove differences caused by mismatched environments.

Troubleshooting
- The CSS file is not being applied. Check that you are using
stylePathwithtoHaveScreenshot(), and that the path resolves from the test’s working context. Forpage.screenshot(), pass the CSS contents usingstyleinstead of passing a filename. - The page is cut off at the viewport. Confirm that the call includes
fullPage: true. Without it, the capture is not explicitly requested as a full scrollable-page screenshot. - The CSS works in a direct capture but not in a test assertion. These are separate APIs and take different values: inline CSS text for
style, file path forstylePath. - A screenshot assertion differs across machines. Align operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode between baseline creation and comparison before changing tolerances.
- The captured image omits content unexpectedly. Inspect the temporary stylesheet’s selectors and remove or narrow rules that hide content the capture should include.
- The option is rejected or unavailable. Verify the project’s Playwright version; these style options are marked as introduced in v1.41.

Can I pass a CSS filename to `page.screenshot()`?
No. Its `style` option takes stylesheet text. Use `stylePath` with a stylesheet file in a Playwright Test `toHaveScreenshot()` assertion.
Does `fullPage: true` capture one element?
No. It captures the scrollable page. Use a locator or element screenshot method when the target is just one element.
