Full-page capture requests content beyond the visible viewport, but it may not scroll like a person and trigger lazy-loaded images or other scroll-driven content. Check that full-page mode is enabled, visit the blank area in the live page and wait for it to appear, then capture again after the required content has rendered.
Diagnose the blank area before changing capture settings
- Identify how the screenshot was made. Note whether you used a browser’s built-in capture, an extension or an automation tool such as Playwright. The available settings and likely causes differ.
- Check the live page at the same location. Scroll to the blank region and wait. If its content appears only after it enters the viewport, lazy loading or another scroll-triggered behavior is a plausible cause. A Playwright issue discussion describes this kind of behavior, including cases involving lazy images, iframe content, IntersectionObserver-driven content, reveal animations and virtualized lists. It is a diagnostic lead, not proof that every blank area has the same cause.
- Wait for the content you need. A general page-load event does not necessarily mean that late or viewport-triggered content has rendered. Wait for the actual report content or a reliable page-specific condition, then inspect the capture.
- Check what scrolls. Some pages scroll inside a panel rather than through the document. Confirm that the missing content belongs to the document or element your capture is covering. Nested scrolling implementations do not have one universal remedy.
- Verify the saved image. Open the output and check the previously blank region, image dimensions and scale. A successful screenshot call alone does not establish that all content rendered. Keep the capture settings and relevant wait or scroll steps with the image so the report can be reproduced.
Fix blank regions in Playwright
For JavaScript, set fullPage: true when you want the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. Playwright documents that fullPage defaults to false. The setting controls the capture area; it does not guarantee that off-screen or delayed content has loaded.

The appropriate wait time and condition depend on the site. Verify the resulting image, especially if the page uses a nested scroll panel, virtualized content or delayed rendering.

Options that change output, not whether content exists
Playwright’s screenshot API also documents options such as scale and omitBackground. Scale affects the output dimensions; omitting the background can produce transparency. They can help format an image for a report, but they cannot make content appear if the page never rendered it.

Compare with Firefox DevTools
To determine whether the issue is specific to your original capture tool, try Firefox’s built-in full-page capture. In Firefox DevTools, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Settings in the Available Toolbox Buttons section, then use the screenshot control. For a report that needs only one part of a page, Firefox also documents taking a node screenshot from the Inspector context menu.

Common causes and what to try
- Full-page mode is off: In Playwright, explicitly set
fullPage: true. Without it, the documented default is a viewport screenshot. - Lazy or scroll-triggered content has not appeared: Scroll to the area in the live page and wait. In automation, scroll through relevant sections before capturing, then inspect the output.
- The page is still rendering: Wait for the specific report content rather than relying only on a generic load event.
- The content is in a nested scroll area: Check whether the panel, rather than the document, owns the scrolling and whether your capture includes the intended structure.
- The problem may be tool-specific: Compare with Firefox’s entire-page screenshot workflow to help isolate the capture path.
- The saved output is incomplete or unsuitable for the report: Check the image itself, dimensions and scale. Playwright’s scale setting changes output sizing; it does not fix unrendered content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does `fullPage: true` make Playwright scroll through the page?
It requests a screenshot of the full scrollable page, but that does not necessarily trigger the same viewport-based loading as ordinary scrolling. If content is missing, test whether scrolling to it in the live page makes it appear.

Should I use a longer timeout for every blank screenshot?
Not automatically. First check whether the missing content appears after scrolling, and wait for the specific content your report needs. The right condition and timing depend on the page.
Can Firefox capture just one element instead of the whole page?
