You can stream a live IP-camera feed from a Synology NAS to YouTube without leaving a PC on: use Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature, enter your YouTube stream URL and key, select the camera, and start the broadcast. But Synology’s documented feature is for camera video—not for continuously looping prerecorded files stored on the NAS. If your goal is a 24/7 video playlist, use a separate cloud streaming service or suitable hardware encoder, or build and verify your own NAS-based encoder setup.

First, identify what you want to stream

The right method depends on whether the source is a live camera or prerecorded video:

  • Live IP-camera feed: Synology documents sending a camera stream from Surveillance Station to YouTube Live with Live Broadcast. The workflow uses H.264 video. Synology’s YouTube integration page describes streaming IP cameras directly from Surveillance Station.
  • Prerecorded video files: The cited Synology documentation does not establish a built-in DSM or Surveillance Station feature for looping stored video files to YouTube. A NAS-local DIY encoder may be possible, but its compatibility and reliability depend on your specific NAS and setup.

YouTube requires an encoder to send the broadcast using a server URL and stream key. The encoder can be software, hardware, or a cloud service. YouTube’s encoder guide lists these options, including cloud services for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams.

Check NAS and camera compatibility

Confirm that your NAS supports the required Surveillance Station package and that the IP camera works with it. Check the current Synology compatibility resources for the exact NAS and camera; support varies by model and software release.

Enable Live Broadcast

  1. In Surveillance Station, open Application Center and enable and open Live Broadcast.
  2. Switch the Live Broadcast service on.

Synology’s Live Broadcast help documents this feature as a way to send a camera stream to YouTube.

Copy your YouTube stream details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
  2. Create or select a stream and copy its server URL and stream key from the stream settings.
  3. In Surveillance Station’s YouTube settings, enter the RTMP path and key, select the camera, and choose a stream profile.
  4. Save and start the broadcast, then check the incoming preview in Live Control Room and confirm the stream is healthy.

The exact YouTube URL and key depend on the selected stream. Treat the key like a password: do not copy an example key from a manual or web page, and replace your key if it is exposed. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where to retrieve and enter the stream details.

  • Supports drives on the model's official compatibility list
  • Up to 522/565 MB/s sequential read/write throughput supports stable data transfers.
  • Dual 2.5GbE ports provide fast network transfer speeds and increased redundancy.
  • Leverage built-in file and photo management, data protection, virtualization, and surveillance solutions.
  • Backed by Synology's 3-year limited hardware warranty.

Use H.264 and verify the preview

Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation specifies H.264 video for its YouTube workflow. Select a stream profile that produces H.264, then verify the preview in Live Control Room before relying on the broadcast. The cited instructions do not establish a universal resolution or bitrate for every camera, NAS, and profile, so use settings supported by your equipment and check YouTube’s live preview for errors.

Can the NAS loop prerecorded videos by itself?

Not through the official workflow described above: Live Broadcast takes a camera as its source. Synology’s documentation does not establish a supported feature that takes an MP4 or playlist from NAS storage and loops it continuously to YouTube.

If you specifically want the video processing to run on the NAS, a user-built software encoder or container is a DIY project, not a verified Synology recipe. Before relying on one, confirm compatibility with your DSM version and NAS architecture, available CPU and memory headroom, media codecs, restart behavior after a failure, network reliability, and whether the encoder supports your intended YouTube connection. The cited official material does not validate a particular container, FFmpeg command, or recovery configuration.

Option Best fit What to check
StreamNeo Uploaded videos or playlists that should stream continuously to YouTube without a PC at home. Runs in the cloud; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card.
NAS-local DIY encoder People who specifically want the processing to run on their own NAS. Verify NAS architecture and resource headroom, codec support, container maintenance, recovery behavior, and RTMPS support. The cited official sources do not validate a Synology file-loop setup.
Other cloud continuous-stream service Prerecorded-video streaming without a dedicated local encoding PC. Check current features, pricing, content handling, stream controls, and availability. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos.
Standalone hardware encoder A dedicated appliance, including some prerecorded-media workflows. Check input formats, scheduling, RTMPS, output format, monitoring, and cost. YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as an H.264 encoder and describes prerecorded-media scheduling without a computer.

These alternatives do not mean Synology is encoding the prerecorded stream. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the cloud and hardware examples above.

YouTube rules and connection details to account for

  • First-time live activation: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before a scheduled launch. YouTube encoder guide.
  • RTMP versus RTMPS: YouTube supports RTMPS, which adds TLS/SSL encryption to RTMP. To use it, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use an encoder that supports it. Synology’s cited Live Broadcast instructions refer to RTMP fields and do not confirm RTMPS support; verify the behavior of your exact package before depending on secure transport. YouTube RTMPS instructions.
  • Archives: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be saved as one complete video. YouTube encoder guide.
  • Copyright and channel policies: Only broadcast video and audio you have the rights to use, and make sure the content complies with YouTube’s policies. A continuous stream does not grant permission to use music or footage, and policy compliance is separate from whether the encoder connects successfully.

Troubleshooting

The camera does not appear in Surveillance Station

Check that the camera works with Surveillance Station and is supported by your exact NAS and package version. Consult Synology’s compatibility resources and confirm the camera is configured and available to Surveillance Station before setting up YouTube.

YouTube does not receive the broadcast

Recheck the server URL and stream key against the selected stream in Live Control Room, then confirm Live Broadcast is switched on and the correct camera and profile are selected. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the NAS settings.

The stream is rejected or has a format warning

For the documented Synology workflow, use an H.264 camera stream profile. Confirm the incoming preview in Live Control Room; the cited Synology instructions do not specify one universal bitrate or resolution for every camera and NAS.

RTMPS does not connect

Check that the encoder explicitly supports RTMPS and that you entered the RTMPS URL, not an RTMP URL. Synology’s cited Live Broadcast help does not confirm RTMPS support, so do not assume it works without checking your package’s current behavior. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

A prerecorded playlist will not start from NAS storage

The documented Live Broadcast feature expects a camera source, not a stored-video playlist. For NAS-local playback, investigate and test a DIY encoder for your model and DSM version; for a no-PC-at-home workflow, use a cloud service or appropriate hardware encoder instead.

Or let it run in the cloud

For prerecorded videos, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos or playlists without leaving a computer or home connection on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
