For a recorded sermon that was filmed in 1080p, use 1080p at 30 fps as the default if your upload connection can sustain YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps video bitrate with headroom. Use 720p at 30 fps if the recording is 720p or the lower bitrate gives you a more reliable continuous stream. YouTube does not prescribe a sermon-specific resolution; the right choice is the best source quality your setup can deliver steadily.
Choose resolution from the source and the connection
Do not upscale a 720p sermon to 1080p expecting more detail. Upscaling enlarges the image but cannot restore detail that was not captured. YouTube transcodes incoming live video into different output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch; your encoder’s resolution is an ingest setting, not a guarantee that every viewer sees that exact resolution. - Use 1080p30 when the original footage is 1080p and the encoder and connection can maintain the recommended bitrate reliably.
- Use 720p30 when the original is 720p, or when reducing the feed resolution gives you meaningful reliability margin.
- Match the source frame rate where practical. For a typical recorded sermon with little motion, 30 fps is a sensible default; YouTube publishes bitrate guidance by frame rate, but does not specify a sermon frame rate.
If you send 1080p footage at 720p, check the actual player output—especially sermon text, lyrics, or slides—before making the stream public. The trade-off is practical: a stable lower-resolution stream is preferable to a higher-resolution feed that repeatedly buffers or disconnects.
YouTube’s recommended live video bitrates
The following are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest bitrate figures. The page does not state a publication or revision year. Minimum is not the same as recommended: use the recommended figure when your connection can support it, with extra bandwidth available beyond the stream’s total bitrate.

These are encoder recommendations, not measurements of what sermon viewers prefer. A 60 fps stream needs substantially more video bitrate than the corresponding 30 fps setting in YouTube’s table; unless the recording’s motion or production calls for 60 fps, 30 fps is usually the more practical starting point for recorded sermons.
Set the encoder and audio correctly

- Video codec: H.264 is supported. YouTube also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streaming.
- Bitrate mode: constant bitrate (CBR) is recommended.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube lists four seconds as the maximum.
- Protocol: RTMPS is recommended.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed. For standard stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate.
Use the settings supported by your encoder and keep the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate aligned with the source and connection. These settings describe delivery to YouTube; YouTube then creates playback formats for viewers.
Check upload bandwidth and leave headroom
YouTube advises that total streaming bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. For example, a 10 Mbps video setting is not a good fit for a connection that only delivers 10 Mbps upload in real use: audio and fluctuations also need capacity. Test upload speed under the same conditions the stream will use, including normal network sharing. A service’s advertised upload speed may not be what the streaming device can sustain continuously.

- Run an upload speed test at the location and time the stream will operate.
- Account for the video and audio bitrate together, and preserve the recommended bandwidth margin.
- If the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce the resolution or bitrate and test again rather than relying on a peak speed result.
Test the 24/7 playback before relying on it
YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” For a recorded-sermon loop, test the actual playlist and representative sermons, not just a static encoder screen.
- Confirm the playlist or playback source loops to the next recording as intended.
- Listen through transitions to ensure audio does not go silent between recordings.
- Check the live player for image clarity, sermon text legibility, and audio/video synchronization.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while testing and during operation.
- Test recovery after an encoder or network interruption, including whether the stream resumes and the playlist continues.
YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish a sermon-specific configuration, a guaranteed 24/7 uptime, or a required monitoring interval. Treat continuity as something your chosen playback and connection setup must be tested to provide.

Troubleshoot common quality and continuity problems

Keep the recordings eligible and suitable for a public loop
Resolution alone does not determine whether a sermon stream can remain public. Before scheduling recordings in a continuous loop, make sure the church or channel has permission for every element it broadcasts, including music, performance, readings, and any third-party video or images. YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance does not set copyright or reused-content policy, so review YouTube’s applicable channel and content rules separately rather than treating a technically valid stream as automatically cleared for publication.
