Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →YouTube’s published guidance does not establish a universal rule that automatically ends every livestream after 24 hours. Its documented 12-hour threshold concerns the replay: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. If the live feed itself stopped after about a day, check the event’s Live Control Room errors, encoder and network records, and any copyright or policy notices to identify the cause.
First, identify what “ended” means
A missing replay, a loss of rewind, and a stopped live feed are different problems. YouTube’s long-stream guidance addresses the first two separately; it does not explain a live feed stopping at 24 hours.
- The live event stopped: Find the event’s error messages and timestamps, then compare them with encoder, network, and power records.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not assume a longer service will produce a complete replay. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
- Viewers cannot rewind to earlier moments: DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream, but YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. The feed may still be live. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.
Why the live feed may have stopped
Encoder or network interruption
An encoder can stop sending, lose its connection, or send a format YouTube cannot accept. YouTube’s Live Control Room shows stream errors next to the health indicator, with timestamps; its error guidance includes an incorrect stream format, such as using something other than H.264 video and AAC audio. A connectivity disruption can also break a stream. See YouTube Help: Live stream errors and YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
Copyright or policy enforcement
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including other copyrighted live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn the broadcaster; if the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a live stream. Check YouTube Studio for notices. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

A church’s use of a song does not, by itself, establish that copyright caused the interruption. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Even when a church has a licence, a rights holder may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID to avoid an automated interruption. Confirm the specific permissions and allowlisting requirements with the rights holder. YouTube Terms of Service.
How to diagnose the interruption
- Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Record the health indicator, every error message, and its timestamp. Errors help distinguish a YouTube-side format problem from an encoder or connection failure.
- Confirm which part stopped. Check whether the event itself ended, only the archive is missing or truncated, or DVR no longer reaches earlier parts of the live feed. The archive and DVR guidance both use a 12-hour threshold; neither establishes a 24-hour shutdown timer.
- Compare the error time with encoder records. Confirm that the encoder used the intended YouTube server URL and stream key, sent a supported video/audio format, and did not stop sending. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to enter the server URL and stream key and says to stop sending content when ending the stream. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Check the connection and equipment. Review upload connectivity, encoder output, power events, and any failover around the recorded time. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality, testing backup-encoder failover, and checking that the local archive file is intact and still growing.
- Review copyright and policy notices. Look in YouTube Studio for copyright or Community Guidelines notices. If the service includes third-party music, verify the required rights and ask the rights holder about any Content ID allowlisting needed for the channel.
- Protect the next service with a local recording. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. Verify during the broadcast that the recording file exists and continues to grow; treat a YouTube replay as uncertain for a stream longer than 12 hours.
What the 24-hour limit does—and does not—mean
YouTube’s error guidance describes a limit on how many live streams a channel can create within a 24-hour period. That is a creation limit, not a stated maximum duration for one continuous broadcast. It does not explain a stream that stops after running for a day. Check the event’s own diagnostics rather than treating the creation limit as a duration rule. YouTube Help: Live stream errors.
