If OBS crashes, it stops sending the church’s audio and video to YouTube. Viewers may lose the picture or sound, and YouTube may report a stream-health problem. Restarting OBS may restore an incoming feed, but YouTube does not guarantee that the same broadcast will resume; check the Live Control Room before telling viewers the stream is back.
What viewers may see when OBS crashes
OBS is the encoder: it takes the church’s audio and video and sends that feed to YouTube using the configured stream details. If OBS stops running, it stops producing that feed. YouTube describes a stream key as the encoder’s “password and address”: YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
The viewer-facing result depends on the broadcast’s state and settings. Viewers may lose the live picture or sound, while the Live Control Room may show a stream-health error. YouTube documents encoder troubleshooting and Auto-start/Auto-stop controls, but does not specify a universal OBS-crash timeout or guarantee that restarting OBS will continue the same broadcast.
What to check after OBS stops
- Check the Live Control Room. Look at stream health and the timestamps on any errors to see when YouTube stopped receiving a healthy feed. See YouTube’s stream-health troubleshooting guidance.
- Confirm OBS is running and sending audio and video. Check for encoder errors and high CPU load. If you have a local recording, inspect it to help distinguish an input or capture problem from an issue with the outgoing stream.
- Check the outbound internet connection. If OBS appears to be working but YouTube is not receiving a healthy feed, check the connection from the encoder to YouTube.
- Verify the incoming preview and audio. Confirm the Live Control Room shows a usable feed before announcing that the stream is restored. This is a sensible check, not a guarantee that the existing broadcast will continue.
- Update viewers if recovery is delayed. If you cannot restore the feed promptly, let viewers know it is interrupted and direct them to the church’s chosen update channel.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that the encoder is current and working. It suggests using a new stream key for certain encoder-start errors; that is not a universal fix for an OBS crash.

Will restarting OBS bring back the same broadcast?
Not necessarily. Restarting OBS can make it possible to send video and audio again, but YouTube’s published guidance does not promise same-broadcast continuity after an encoder crash. The reviewed guidance also does not define one reconnect grace period that applies to every broadcast. Check the Live Control Room for the actual event’s state and incoming feed rather than assuring viewers that a restart will preserve the same event.
Does YouTube’s backup server prevent an interruption?
No—not if OBS itself has crashed. YouTube documents a Backup server URL for HLS ingestion and lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output: YouTube’s HLS setup instructions. The backup URL is another destination for a working encoder’s feed; it does not restart OBS or provide a second active encoder. A crash leaves OBS unable to send to either destination.

Continuity planning therefore requires an independent, functioning backup source and a tested procedure. Do not assume that configuring a backup URL creates automatic failover from a crashed OBS instance.

- Check OBS and the outbound connection before the service, and know where to find stream health and timestamped errors in the Live Control Room.
- If local recording is part of your workflow, check that it is working; it can help diagnose what happened, but it does not keep YouTube live when OBS stops sending.
- Agree in advance who will check the feed, communicate an interruption, and decide whether to attempt recovery or direct viewers to an update.
- If uninterrupted streaming is essential, design and test an independent backup encoder. A second destination URL alone is not a backup encoder.
