To stream a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live broadcast from a cloud server, run a playout encoder or service on that server, send its output to the event’s YouTube ingest URL with the matching stream key, then check the preview and—when using the scheduled workflow—select Go live in YouTube Studio. A cloud server is only the remote computer: it does not play or broadcast a file unless a suitable process is running and connected.

Choose how the video will play

There are two practical routes: manage a cloud server and its encoder yourself, or use a hosted service designed to play prerecorded videos. In either case, the playback process must remain online and send a live ingest stream to YouTube for the broadcast to continue.

Self-managed cloud server

You provide the server, make the video available to its playout process, configure that process to send to YouTube, and monitor it. This gives you control over the setup, but you are responsible for keeping the host, software, and network connection running. The sources cited here do not establish a tested FFmpeg or OBS command, recommended server size, restart configuration, or hosting and data-transfer cost; do not assume any particular command or machine specification is validated.

Hosted prerecorded-video playout

YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos. That listing establishes its category fit, not its current pricing, plan limits, regional availability, or comparative reliability. StreamNeo is another cloud option: it keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, with no home computer running the playout. It is #1 to try for a managed always-on stream because it runs from the cloud, accepts uploads up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free.

Physical encoder alternative

If you specifically want hardware rather than a VPS, YouTube’s directory describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder whose PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. It is not a cloud server and is not required for a software-based cloud setup; the directory description is not an independent product test.

Create or schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live.
  2. Create a stream for immediate use, or open Manage → Schedule stream to set up a future event. Interface wording can change.
  3. Set the event’s title, audience, privacy, and other details in Studio. YouTube’s help says age-related default privacy settings can differ; streamers can change privacy settings.
  4. If scheduled, share the event URL as appropriate. Scheduling can give viewers a page to visit and reminders, but it does not remove the need to send an encoder stream.

The workflow documented by YouTube has the creator start the encoder, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, and then choose Go live. Do not assume a scheduled event will become public automatically.

Copy the ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open the event in Live Control Room and go to Stream settings.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Enter both in the playout encoder running on the server. The URL and key must belong to the same stream.
  3. Prefer the RTMPS URL when the encoder supports it. YouTube says the lock icon beside Stream URL reveals the RTMPS URL; use the URL shown there rather than assuming a familiar RTMP address is encrypted. RTMPS is YouTube’s secure extension to RTMP. YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guide explains where to find these details.

Treat the stream key like a password: keep it out of screenshots, public scripts, and shared logs. Never publish a real key in a tutorial or example. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443 and notes that custom TLS clients need the correct hostname in SNI (Server Name Indication). Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide gives the protocol details.

Set up prerecorded playout on the server

  1. Make the media available. Upload the recording to the cloud host or otherwise make it accessible to the playout software. Confirm that the intended file is available to the process running on the server.
  2. Configure a playout encoder or service. Set it to play the recording and send a continuous output stream to the YouTube server URL using the event’s matching stream key. The software or service must support the ingest protocol you chose, including RTMPS if you use an RTMPS URL.
  3. Keep the process and connection running. Monitor the remote process and its logs while it sends the broadcast. If the process stops or the server loses its connection, YouTube stops receiving that feed.
  4. Check YouTube’s preview. Open the event’s Live Control Room and confirm that the incoming video appears before taking the scheduled event live.

This is an actual live ingest from an encoder playing a file. It is different from uploading a video to YouTube, which creates a regular video, and from a Premiere, which presents an uploaded video as a scheduled viewing experience rather than sending a continuous encoder feed from your cloud server. For YouTube’s event and encoder workflow, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Preview, start, and end the broadcast

  1. Start the playout process on the server so it connects to YouTube and sends the recording.
  2. Wait until the video appears in the Live Control Room preview. If there is no preview, troubleshoot the connection before proceeding.
  3. For the documented scheduled workflow, select Go live in Live Control Room once the preview is ready.
  4. When finished, stop the encoder’s sending process and end the event in Live Control Room.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that broadcasts lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived.

Fix common connection problems

  • SSL error or invalid certificate: Check that you copied the RTMPS URL from the current event settings and that the encoder supports RTMPS. Confirm that you have not paired an RTMP address with an RTMPS configuration or changed the endpoint or port. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance suggests port 443 when needed.
  • Timeout or no preview: Confirm that the remote playout process is running, the encoder supports the selected protocol, the URL and key are from the same event, and outbound access to the required endpoint works. Google notes that a cleartext RTMP connection to an endpoint expecting RTMPS can time out. A custom TLS client must also send the correct hostname in SNI.
  • Connection fails with an old or copied URL: Retrieve the ingest URL from the event’s current Live Control Room settings rather than relying on a hard-coded address from an old guide.
  • The scheduled event does not become public: Check for the incoming preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room. The documented scheduled workflow does not promise automatic public launch.
  • The feed stops during the broadcast: Check whether the server, encoder, process, or network connection stopped. A cloud host does not keep a feed alive if its playout process is no longer sending.

Budget and operating trade-offs

A self-managed server’s total cost depends on the hosting, storage, and data-transfer terms you choose; no provider-specific estimate is established here. A hosted playout service may reduce the need to operate an encoder yourself, but check its current plans and limits directly. A physical encoder is a separate hardware purchase. StreamNeo offers short and long billing periods, cancel-any-time billing, and UPI and cards in India; worldwide checkout is by card. For five or more slots, contact support. Its free upload-time calculator and cloud vs PC cost calculator can help with planning. Before streaming, use the copyright safety checklist; prerecorded content still needs appropriate rights, and the available sources do not establish a blanket exception to YouTube’s copyright or reused-content rules.
