Keep the encoder under an operating-system service supervisor so it can restart after a process failure, and check the cloud provider’s schedules, runtime limits, and shutdown automation before trying a keep-alive trick. YouTube needs the encoder to keep sending content; a running VM or an open watch page alone does not keep a broadcast alive.
Identify what stopped before changing settings
When a 24/7 YouTube stream goes dark, separate three possible failures. Each has a different fix, and a keep-alive request will not solve all of them.
- The VM is running, but the encoder exited: inspect the encoder process and its logs, then configure a service supervisor to restart it after failure.
- The VM is stopped: inspect provider event history, schedules, runtime limits, shutdown automation, and account or project policies. Change only the confirmed rule that conflicts with continuous operation.
- The VM or network was interrupted: examine provider events and provisioning type, then assess recovery and reconnection separately. A process restart policy cannot restore a stopped or unreachable machine by itself.
Record the time the stream went dark, the VM state, encoder logs, and YouTube stream status. That evidence helps distinguish a process crash from a provider lifecycle action or a network interruption.
Check whether the cloud provider stopped the VM
Google Compute Engine schedules and runtime limits
Compute Engine instance schedules use a resource policy attached to VM instances to automate start and stop operations. Google says scheduled operations may begin up to 15 minutes after the scheduled time; a schedule is something to inspect, not evidence that an ordinary VM sleeps by default. Compute Engine runtime limits can be configured to stop or delete a VM. Google documents limits from 30 seconds to 120 days and notes that VMs can also be interrupted by user requests or host events. Check whether a limit was deliberately set and whether the VM’s provisioning model suits a long-running service. Details are in Google’s runtime-limit documentation.
Cloud Workstations are a separate product from general Compute Engine VMs. Google documents an idle shutdown feature for Workstations and describes /google/scripts/keep_alive.sh and background workstation.Start calls for that specific use case. Do not apply those Workstations instructions to an ordinary Compute Engine VM; see the Cloud Workstations documentation.

AWS EC2 state and restart implications
AWS says an EC2 instance in the running state is billed for instance usage even when idle and nobody connects. Instance usage is not billed while it is stopped, although attached EBS storage and resources such as Elastic IPs may still incur charges. “Idle” describes activity; it is not the same as the provider’s stopped state. Consult AWS’s instance lifecycle documentation.
Stopping and starting an EC2 instance can change network details: AWS says a new public IPv4 address is assigned in most cases unless an Elastic IP or qualifying network configuration is used. Auto Scaling may also treat a non-running instance as unhealthy and replace it. Before using stop/start as recovery, check orchestration and ensure the encoder can reach YouTube with the resulting network configuration. See AWS’s stop-and-start guidance.

Keep the encoder alive, not just the VM
If the VM remains running while the broadcast stops, focus on the encoder process. Run it under the service supervisor appropriate to the VM’s operating system and configure a restart after process failure. There is no universal copy-paste command: the correct configuration depends on the OS, encoder (such as OBS or FFmpeg), and how the workload is launched.
Monitor three separate signals: VM state, encoder process health, and YouTube’s incoming stream status. Test a controlled encoder restart and a VM reboot before relying on unattended operation. A process supervisor can recover an exited encoder; it is not a substitute for VM recovery, network failover, or backup capacity.

OBS is encoder software, not a cloud-server keep-alive service. OBS says it connects from the computer running it directly to the streaming destination; dropped frames may indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.
Verify YouTube is receiving the encoder stream
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast, then enter them in the encoder.
- Start the encoder and confirm it is sending content to YouTube. The watch page goes live after the encoder starts transmitting; an available page alone is not proof that video is arriving.
- If the stream stops, check encoder output and reconnect behavior, then confirm the configured URL and key still match the intended broadcast.
- Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder instructions state: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one broadcast will be archived continuously beyond that duration. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

YouTube’s verified encoder guide identifies CamStreamer as an in-camera application supporting continuous 24/7 and scheduled streams. That is an alternative production path, not a way to keep a cloud VM awake; see YouTube’s verified encoder list.

For deployment choices, weigh control over machine lifecycle, interruption tolerance, monitoring and recovery burden, compute and attached-resource costs, and YouTube ingest continuity. The sources cited here do not establish a universal provider, machine size, price, command, or downtime guarantee. Confirm the provider and provisioning terms before relying on a VM for uninterrupted service.
