For one prerecorded video, add it to an OBS Studio Media Source and enable Loop. For several videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source, add the files as a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Those settings repeat playback, but OBS does not promise a zero-gap transition between separate playlist files. Test the exact files and setup in a private or unlisted stream before relying on it.

Choose the right looping method

Setup Best suited to Tradeoff
OBS Media Source with one file looping Repeating one video or a sequence assembled into one file Simple setup, but the end-to-start join still needs testing.
OBS VLC Video playlist Repeating multiple separate files Convenient playlist control, but no official zero-gap promise at file boundaries; VLC is required.
StreamNeo cloud service Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running without a local encoder computer Hosted workflow rather than local playback; see the service’s current details at StreamNeo.

If a perfectly continuous audio or video boundary matters, a single preassembled file avoids handoffs between playlist items. Its end-to-start loop still must be tested. Neither approach is a documented guarantee of gapless playback.

Set up a looping stream in OBS

  1. Enable YouTube Live. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Create an OBS scene. For one file, add a Media Source, choose the local video, and enable Loop. For several files, add a VLC Video source, add the playlist files, and enable Loop Playlist. OBS requires VLC installed on the same system for VLC Video to appear; if OBS is 64-bit, OBS documents that 64-bit VLC is required. See OBS Media Sources.
  3. Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your event. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  4. Set encoder output to suit your connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1, AAC or MP3 audio, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s current table for your selected output at YouTube encoder settings. Do not choose a bitrate your sustained upload cannot support.
  5. Test privately or unlisted. Use representative video and audio, watch the Live Control Room preview, inspect stream health, and listen and watch at every file boundary and at the loop restart. YouTube recommends a test stream and ongoing monitoring; see YouTube live-streaming tips.
  6. Start the encoder and monitor the event. For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder before the scheduled start and confirm the preview before making the event public. Keep an eye on audio, video, and connection health while the stream runs.

What “without a gap” can realistically mean

OBS documents that a Media Source can restart a single file after playback completes and that a VLC playlist can restart after all its files have played. It does not document seamless switching between distinct playlist files. A 2020 OBS forum discussion describes a brief pause for a repeated clip in a VLC playlist, while the poster reported no pause with a single-file Media Source loop in that particular setup. That is an anecdotal report, not a guarantee across formats, systems, or software versions. See the OBS forum discussion.

Check both picture and sound at transitions. Encodes with mismatched frame rates, audio sample timing, or black/silent frames may produce an apparent pause even when playback is functioning as configured. If a boundary is unacceptable, revise the source edit or use a single assembled file, then test its loop point again.

YouTube rules and long-running broadcasts

  • Use material you have rights to stream. A live event is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules; permission to use a song or video elsewhere does not by itself establish permission for a public YouTube broadcast. Check the applicable rights and YouTube policies before streaming.
  • Do not assume repetition alone makes reused material acceptable. Copyright permission and YouTube’s monetization/reused-content assessments are separate questions. Repeated prerecorded content may have implications for monetization; review current YouTube policy for your channel and content rather than assuming that looping makes it original.
  • Plan for archive limits. YouTube’s encoder article says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a long-running channel, plan around that stated limit and verify current platform behavior before relying on an archive. See YouTube’s encoder article.
  • Keep local resources available. With OBS, the computer, OBS, source files, and network connection must remain available while the encoder is streaming. A sleep, restart, lost connection, or application failure can interrupt the feed.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC on the same computer. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, as specified by OBS.
  • The stream connects but the video does not loop: Check that Loop is enabled for the Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video. Confirm that the source files remain accessible and playable.
  • There is a pause between playlist files: Playlist repetition does not guarantee gapless transitions. Test the media boundary in a private or unlisted broadcast; consider assembling the sequence into one file and testing its loop point.
  • YouTube shows no preview or reports a connection issue: Confirm the server URL and stream key in OBS, verify that the event is ready in Live Control Room, and check OBS’s output settings against your upload capacity and YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
  • The picture or sound stutters: Test at a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate supported by your connection, using YouTube’s bitrate table as the reference. Check playback and stream health during a test before going public.
  • The channel cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether live-streaming restrictions apply. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
