For most creators who want a YouTube channel to play uploaded videos continuously, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs the stream from the cloud, supports uploads up to 4K at 60 fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. If you want to operate your own encoder, a virtual machine on AWS EC2 or Google Compute Engine can host it while YouTube Live Control Room continues to manage the event. The VM is not a turnkey broadcast service: you must size, configure, monitor, and recover the encoder yourself.
How the cloud encoder and Live Control Room work together
They do separate jobs. A cloud virtual machine (VM) runs the encoder software and sends the video feed to YouTube. YouTube Live Control Room creates or manages the event, receives that feed, shows its preview, and provides the control to start the public broadcast.
YouTube’s setup guide puts the connection plainly: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes copying those details into the encoder, starting it, checking the preview, and then clicking Go live. Running the encoder on a remote VM does not move the event controls out of Live Control Room.

2. AWS EC2 — a general-purpose VM to manage yourself
EC2 can host an encoder process, but the instance, operating system, encoder, credentials, monitoring, and recovery remain your responsibility. AWS describes On-Demand instances as usage-priced, with hourly or per-second billing subject to a stated minimum, and data transfer priced separately. The total depends on your selected instance, region, operating hours, storage, and network usage; the available information does not establish a single all-in monthly cost for a 24/7 stream. See AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing.

3. Google Compute Engine — a general-purpose VM with documented YouTube transfer treatment
Google Compute Engine can also host an encoder. Pricing varies by machine type and region. Google’s network-pricing documentation lists no charge in a specified category for transfer from VMs to certain Google services, including YouTube; that does not make the VM free, and the statement should not be generalized to other providers or transfer categories. Egress capacity also varies by VM family and routing. See Google Cloud network pricing and Compute Engine network bandwidth documentation.
Neither EC2 nor Compute Engine is established here as universally cheapest, most reliable, or officially recommended by YouTube. They are flexible infrastructure options, not complete managed 24/7 broadcast services.
Choose a VM by the stream you need to send
Before pricing or creating a VM, write down the workload. A provider comparison is meaningful only when the candidate configurations use the same assumptions.

- Video profile: resolution, frame rate, and sustained bitrate. Use a profile supported by your YouTube event and reliable for the available network path.
- Encoder requirements: encoder software and whether the chosen profile needs more CPU capacity or a hardware accelerator. Do not assume a small VM can encode a demanding profile.
- Region and routing: choose the intended VM region, then check the applicable egress limits and route to YouTube for that exact configuration.
- Storage: decide whether the VM needs disk for source files, temporary files, or local recordings, and how long recordings should be retained.
- Availability and recovery: specify whether you need a backup encoder, health checks, alerts, and an automatic or operator-led restart procedure.
- Operating hours and cost: budget for continuous compute, disk, operating system or software licensing, applicable network charges, and any public IP or related networking costs.
Google documents machine-specific egress limits; its bandwidth page describes up to 7 Gbps for many VM families sending to destinations outside a VPC without Tier 1 networking, subject to named exceptions and other limits. That is a provider-documented limit, not a recommended stream bitrate or a guarantee for every machine. Check the exact VM series, size, routing, and other applicable limits, then allow headroom above the encoder’s sustained output. See Google’s bandwidth limits.
Set up the self-managed cloud workflow
- Confirm channel access and create the event. Make sure the channel is eligible to live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the event before connecting the encoder, following YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose and provision the VM. Select a region, operating system, machine type, storage, and network configuration based on the workload above. Check that the instance can encode the chosen profile and sustain the required outbound bitrate. Provider VM pricing and bandwidth limits depend on these choices.
- Install and configure an encoder. Install encoder software compatible with your operating system and content workflow. Select a stable output profile supported by the event and appropriate to the VM’s encoding capacity and network path. Consult YouTube’s recommended live encoder settings; settings should suit the connection rather than simply maximize resolution or bitrate.
- Copy the event connection details securely. Put the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password/address for sending the feed. Treat it as a credential: do not expose it in screenshots, scripts, or logs, and rotate it if compromised. See YouTube’s stream key guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start the encoder process on the VM. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and inspect the picture and audio before clicking Go live.
- Go live and monitor both systems. Use Live Control Room for YouTube event controls and stream health. Separately monitor the VM’s encoder process and network, and configure alerts and a tested restart or recovery procedure. Those operational safeguards are recommendations for a continuous workload, not a guarantee supplied by a cloud provider.
- Plan how recordings and long sessions are handled. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That stated behavior does not establish automatic archiving for a single stream longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, plan periodic endings and new sessions, keep an independent recording where appropriate, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on it. The documentation reviewed does not specify a no-interruption mechanism for an endless stream.
Compare the real monthly cost, not just the VM rate
Continuous compute is only one part of a self-managed stream’s cost. Price the same workload in each intended region and include the VM hours, disk, operating system or software charges, applicable network transfer, and any public IP or networking costs. AWS EC2 On-Demand pricing includes compute and separate data-transfer pricing; Google Compute Engine pricing varies by machine type and region, and its documented no-charge VM-to-YouTube transfer category does not remove compute charges. Current provider pricing pages are dynamic, so there is no meaningful all-in comparison without a specific configuration.

Common problems and what to check
Live Control Room shows no preview
Confirm that the encoder is running, the event’s stream URL and key are correct, and the VM can reach YouTube over its configured network path. Check the encoder’s output and its logs without exposing the key, then restart the encoder if needed.
The feed disconnects or becomes unstable
Check the encoder process, sustained outbound bitrate, and the selected VM’s egress limits and routing. A nominal bandwidth figure for another machine family does not validate the instance in use. Reduce the output profile if the path cannot sustain it, and test the restart and alerting procedure rather than assuming a cloud VM will recover the encoder automatically.
The VM is running but the broadcast is not
A running VM does not prove that the encoder process is active or that the YouTube event has been taken live. Check the encoder status and incoming preview, then use Live Control Room’s controls to manage the event.
