To keep a YouTube lo-fi stream running from a Mac mini, send a continuous program through an encoder such as OBS, prevent the Mac from sleeping while its display is off, and monitor the stream’s health. That keeps the computer from idling out, but it cannot prevent interruptions caused by a power outage, internet failure, OBS crash, or YouTube copyright action. Build the program from content you are authorized to stream, test the complete setup, and plan how you will detect and recover from a stoppage.
What you need for a 24/7 stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no current restriction that prevents you from going live.
- A continuous audio-and-visual program made from music and images you have permission to stream, archive, and use in your intended territories.
- An encoder on the Mac mini, such as OBS, to send that program to YouTube.
- A reliable internet connection and a plan for noticing and addressing interruptions.
OBS is free and open source; the documented workflow does not require paid encoder software. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
Prepare the music and visuals before going live
Do not assume that a track is cleared for a continuous livestream simply because it is available to listen to, or because you have a license for some uses. Confirm that the rights cover live streaming, the territories where viewers may watch, the duration of use, monetization if applicable, and any archive or replay YouTube creates.
YouTube scans live feeds for third-party content. Its guidance warns that even licensed material may interrupt a stream if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. Confirm the provider’s requirements before building the loop; if allowlisting is required, have it completed for the channel you will use. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Set up the Mac mini and encoder
- Check channel access. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that live streaming is available for the intended channel and check for restrictions before announcing a continuous schedule. YouTube says channels must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts, since eligibility and workflow can change.
- Build your continuous program. In OBS, create a scene with the authorized visual and audio sources. Arrange the content to loop or otherwise continue without requiring manual input. Check the scene’s sound levels and picture before sending it to YouTube.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In Live Control Room, choose the stream setup and copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; reset it through YouTube if it is compromised.
- Prevent automatic sleep. On the Mac mini, open System Settings > Energy and enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off, if that option is available on your Mac and macOS version. Set the display to turn off after your preferred interval. The display can be off while the Mac stays awake to encode. - Test the actual stream. Start with a test or unlisted stream. Start OBS before the planned broadcast, then check YouTube’s preview for picture and sound and watch stream health at the resolution and bitrate you intend to use. YouTube recommends preflight checks and monitoring. Do not treat a successful short test as proof that the setup will never fail during longer operation.
- Decide how you will respond to an outage. Work out how you will learn that the stream stopped and who can restart OBS or troubleshoot the connection. A wired network connection can avoid some wireless variability. A properly sized UPS may help keep the Mac and network equipment powered through some interruptions, but it is not a guarantee of continuity or automatic restart.
Choose settings by testing, not by assuming a universal bitrate
The available guidance does not establish one bitrate or upload-speed target that is right for every Mac mini, resolution, network, and stream. Begin with settings appropriate to your intended output, then test under the same conditions you expect during the broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and OBS for dropped frames; lower the bitrate or adjust the output if the connection cannot sustain it.
OBS explains that dropped frames can occur when the connection is unstable or cannot maintain the selected bitrate. It may drop frames to avoid buffering and keep the stream playing. See the OBS Help portal. A stream that appears active in OBS is not enough: verify the receiving YouTube preview and health status too.

What can interrupt a local Mac mini stream
- The Mac sleeps: the encoder cannot keep sending the feed if the computer sleeps. Recheck the Energy setting after macOS updates or changes to power configuration.
- Internet instability: OBS may report dropped frames if the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate. Check the network and stream health, then reduce output demands if necessary.
- Power loss: the Mac and network equipment may stop. Apple documents startup-after-power-failure and UPS options, but that does not establish automatic recovery for every configuration.
- OBS or macOS fails: preventing sleep does not make the encoder immune to a crash, update, or other software problem. Plan for someone to notice and recover the stream.
- YouTube or rights enforcement interrupts the feed: third-party content may trigger a live interruption even when you believe you have permission, particularly if Content ID allowlisting is required and incomplete.
Apple’s Energy guidance covers power-related options, not a guarantee that OBS will relaunch or that a broadcast will resume after every failure. The sources cited here also do not establish a maximum continuous event duration, complete archive capture for a 24-hour stream, or reliable unattended restart behavior. Confirm those details for your actual channel and configuration rather than promising an uninterrupted feed.

Can the Mac mini’s display turn off while the stream continues?
Yes, if the Mac remains awake and the encoder is running. In System Settings > Energy, enable “Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off” if your Mac offers it.

Will a UPS guarantee that a 24/7 stream never stops?
No. It may keep the Mac and network equipment powered during some outages, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted internet, prevent software failures, or ensure the stream restarts.
Does a music license always prevent YouTube from interrupting a live stream?
No. YouTube says licensed content may still interrupt the broadcast if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID.
