Use Amazon EventBridge Scheduler to invoke a capture function on a recurring schedule, render each page in a browser, and upload the resulting image bytes to a private S3 bucket. Give the Scheduler and Lambda separate, narrowly scoped IAM roles; write timestamped object keys if you need history; and monitor the capture and upload results—not just whether Lambda was invoked.
How the scheduled capture pipeline works
The basic flow is Scheduler → capture function → browser render → S3. Scheduler supports recurring cron and rate schedules and can invoke Lambda asynchronously. AWS recommends EventBridge Scheduler for scheduled targets; its execution role controls permission to invoke the target. See AWS’s guide to invoking Lambda on a schedule.
- Schedule: Set the cadence and target in EventBridge Scheduler.
- Pass configuration: Send a site identifier and URL, or a key that lets the function retrieve configuration. Keep credentials and sensitive configuration out of the event and object name.
- Render: Use a browser automation runtime to load the page and capture the viewport or full page, according to what you need to monitor.
- Upload: Write the image bytes to S3 with a predictable key.
- Record outcome: Emit structured logs for the site, requested URL, capture time, render result and S3 write result.
For example, a historical key could be site-id/2026/10/04/13-30-00Z.png. Use UTC in the timestamp to avoid daylight-saving ambiguity. This is a practical naming convention, not an AWS requirement.
Choose a browser-rendering approach
Run a browser in the capture function
A browser-based renderer is needed for pages whose appearance depends on JavaScript, client-side data or page layout. The AWS references cited here do not establish which browser package and version will work with a particular Lambda runtime, deployment package, memory allocation or timeout. Before choosing one, verify the package’s current compatibility and test the actual deployment artifact and target pages. Do not assume that a browser library that runs on a developer’s computer will run unchanged in Lambda.

Define capture behavior explicitly: a fixed viewport is useful for consistent monitoring; a full-page image is useful when below-the-fold content matters. Pages with lazy-loaded images, authentication, bot checks, long-running requests or consent prompts can produce results that differ from a normal desktop visit. Test representative pages and log failures instead of treating every returned image as a successful capture.
Keep the event small and configuration controlled
For a small fixed set of sites, the event can contain a site ID and URL. For a larger or sensitive configuration, pass a configuration key and retrieve the URL and any needed credentials from an appropriately protected store. Avoid putting secrets in public object names, logs or schedule descriptions. Group sites under one schedule only when they have compatible cadence, timeout and failure-handling needs.
Configure the schedule and function permissions
Keep the two execution roles separate. The EventBridge Scheduler execution role needs permission to invoke the chosen target. The Lambda execution role needs only the permissions required by the function, such as writing objects to the intended bucket and key prefix and sending logs. AWS describes Lambda execution roles in its Lambda and S3 tutorial.
- Limit the Scheduler role to invoking the intended function.
- Limit the Lambda role’s S3 write permissions to the bucket and prefix used for screenshots.
- Grant logging permissions needed for operational visibility.
- Do not make the bucket or objects public merely to simplify viewing.
For schedule setup, choose a recurring cron or rate expression that matches the required cadence, select the capture function as the target, and configure the Scheduler role for that invocation. AWS’s EventBridge Scheduler documentation and scheduled Lambda instructions describe the service configuration. The exact browser packaging and function resource settings depend on the renderer and page workload, so validate those against the selected runtime rather than assuming one universal configuration.

Store screenshots privately and choose a key strategy
Website screenshots may contain account details, personal information or unpublished material. Keep the bucket private and give readers authenticated, scoped access. Encryption at rest does not replace access control. AWS says S3 applies SSE-S3 by default to new uploads; that baseline became effective January 5, 2023. Its documentation states: “Amazon S3 now applies server-side encryption with Amazon S3 managed keys (SSE-S3) as the base level of encryption for every bucket in Amazon S3.” See S3 default encryption documentation. Consider a customer-managed KMS key only when its additional control and policy requirements are needed, and verify current key costs and permissions before adopting it.
Historical captures or one latest image?
- Keep every capture: Put a UTC timestamp in each key so one scheduled run does not overwrite another. Organize by site and date for easier review and lifecycle management.
- Expose a fixed latest key: A stable key such as
site-id/latest.pngis convenient for consumers but overwrites the previous object. Decide whether S3 Versioning is appropriate if you need recovery from accidental overwrites.
Versioning can preserve recoverable copies, but those versions continue to use storage until they are removed. Decide explicitly how long historical data and noncurrent versions should remain.
Set retention and understand deletion behavior
Use S3 Lifecycle rules to transition older screenshot objects to another storage class or expire them after a chosen age. Lifecycle rules apply to existing objects as well as future uploads. Transitions and some storage classes can carry request charges or minimum-duration cost considerations; compare the current terms for your region and workload before choosing a transition. See S3 Lifecycle management.
On a versioned bucket, expiration of the current object can add a delete marker without removing older noncurrent versions. If the goal is permanent deletion after a retention period, configure expiration for noncurrent versions as well and account for delete markers. Lifecycle actions are asynchronous, so deletion may not happen immediately. AWS explains the versioning and expiration behavior in its Lifecycle troubleshooting documentation.

Detect missed or unsuccessful captures
Scheduler’s invocation of Lambda is not proof that the page rendered correctly or that an object was written. Log application-level outcomes and alert on failed captures or stale last-success timestamps if the images support an operational process.
- Include a site ID, capture timestamp, render status, object key and upload result in structured logs.
- Configure retry limits and failed-event retention for the outage and recovery window you can tolerate.
- Use a dead-letter queue if failed events need inspection or replay.
- Track each site’s most recent successful capture; alert if it is older than the expected cadence plus an acceptable delay.
AWS documents checking CloudWatch logs to confirm that Scheduler invoked the function, along with retry and failure handling in its scheduled Lambda guide. Treat that as invocation evidence only; your function’s own render and upload logs are needed to confirm a saved screenshot.
If a later workflow should react to new objects—for example, creating thumbnails or notifying a review process—S3 can send supported events to EventBridge. This is optional for scheduled capture; AWS says no additional S3 permission is needed simply to deliver events to EventBridge. See S3 EventBridge event delivery.
Plan for performance and cost
There is no single cost estimate that fits every deployment. Evaluate the function’s compute use and duration, schedule frequency, S3 requests, stored bytes, any lifecycle transition and retrieval charges, and the region’s current pricing. Full-page captures, heavier pages, retries and longer browser sessions can change resource use. Measure representative captures in the deployed configuration before setting tight timeouts or high-frequency schedules.

Choose cadence according to how quickly a change must be detected, then account for concurrency if multiple sites are captured together. A failed or delayed run should not silently look like a fresh image: preserve a success timestamp and distinguish capture failure from a successful upload. If you overwrite a fixed key, include version retention in storage planning; if each run gets a unique key, set a retention rule so history does not grow indefinitely.

The function is not invoked
Check that the schedule is enabled, targets the intended function, and has an execution role that can invoke it. Inspect Scheduler’s invocation and failure records and the Lambda CloudWatch logs. An invocation permission issue is different from a page-render or S3 failure.
The function runs but no valid screenshot appears
Check the function logs for browser launch errors, navigation timeouts, bot checks, blank pages or incomplete page loads. Verify that the selected browser runtime and its dependencies are compatible with the deployed Lambda runtime and package. Increase or adjust resources only after measuring the page and renderer; the AWS material cited here does not prescribe a browser package or universal memory and timeout values.
The page looks incomplete
Confirm whether the capture should be viewport-only or full-page, whether the page requires a wait condition, and whether content loads only after scrolling or interaction. Use a representative URL and compare the returned image with the intended monitoring target. Record a distinct render status for incomplete or blocked pages rather than marking them successful.

The screenshot is not uploaded
Check the Lambda role’s bucket and prefix scope, the bucket policy, the object key, and the S3 error in application logs. Keep upload failure distinct from render failure so a retry or investigation targets the correct step.
Objects remain after the retention period
Check whether the bucket is versioned. Current-object expiration can leave noncurrent versions behind, and Lifecycle processing can be delayed. Add the appropriate noncurrent-version expiration rule if permanent removal is intended, then verify the lifecycle configuration against the actual object versions.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. You can have a scheduled function call its API, receive the image bytes and upload them to your S3 bucket. The example below uses Python with requests and boto3; provide the API key, target URL, bucket and object key through the function’s protected configuration. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
import os
import requests
import boto3
s3 = boto3.client("s3")
def handler(event, context):
url = event["url"]
bucket = os.environ["SCREENSHOT_BUCKET"]
key = event["s3_key"]
response = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": os.environ["SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY"], "url": url},
timeout=90,
)
response.raise_for_status()
s3.put_object(
Bucket=bucket,
Key=key,
Body=response.content,
ContentType="image/webp",
)
return {"bucket": bucket, "key": key}
Package the required Python dependencies with the function. The Lambda role still needs scoped S3 upload and logging permissions, and the function still needs the same success monitoring and retention design. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed; an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000. Can S3 itself take a screenshot on a schedule?
No. The schedule needs to invoke a page-rendering service or function; S3 stores the resulting object.
Can I use a fixed S3 key for the latest capture?
Yes. A fixed key is convenient for readers, but it overwrites the current object unless versioning preserves prior versions.
