When a scheduled website screenshot times out, treat that capture attempt as failed and let the scheduler—or the wrapper that launches the capture—start a fresh, bounded retry. Log each attempt, publish an image only after a successful capture, and use a stable run ID so a retry cannot leave duplicate or misleading output. Playwright Test’s retry settings do not automatically retry an independent cron job, scheduled script, or hosted capture request.
Choose the retry layer that matches your job
There are three different kinds of retry, and they solve different problems:
- Scheduled capture retry: Your scheduler or a wrapper around the capture script/API repeats a failed URL capture. Use this for recurring jobs, including plain Playwright scripts and hosted screenshot requests.
- Playwright Test retry: The Playwright Test runner can rerun a failed test using its configurable
retriessetting. This applies only when the scheduled task runs a Playwright Test suite; it does not configure cron, a CI schedule, a serverless timer, or a third-party service. See the Playwright Test configuration reference. - Screenshot assertion retry:
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot()waits for consecutive screenshots to match, then compares the last capture with the expected image. Its timeout controls how long that assertion retries. It works with the Playwright test runner, not as a general retry policy for scheduled capture jobs; an abortedAbortSignalfails the assertion without further retry. For a job whose purpose is simply to capture one or more pages on a schedule, put the retry policy in the scheduler or capture wrapper. That layer can control timing, retries, overlap, logging, and what happens when attempts run out.
Set up a safe retry policy
1. Choose a finite timeout and retry window
Set a navigation or readiness timeout that suits the site and the state required for the screenshot. Avoid an unbounded wait: it can consume the schedule window and hold up other URLs. The appropriate timeout, attempt count, and delay depend on the schedule cadence, site behavior, and service limits; the Playwright sources do not prescribe universal values.

2. Retry only failures that may clear
A slow response or temporary network problem may justify another attempt. An invalid URL or access-denied page is unlikely to improve simply by repeating the same request indefinitely. Classify errors where possible, and stop retrying permanent failures rather than consuming the whole schedule window.
3. Start a distinct attempt
On timeout, preserve the error and stage, then start a fresh capture attempt according to your policy. Where practical, use a new page or browser context rather than reusing state left behind by the failed attempt. Do not mark a missing screenshot as success.

4. Make output idempotent
Assign a stable run identifier to the scheduled job and record an attempt number separately. Write a successful capture to a temporary file, then atomically rename it to the final path where the storage system supports that operation. Alternatively, use stable output naming and publish only after capture succeeds. This prevents a partial attempt from overwriting a good screenshot and makes repeated runs easier to identify.
5. Prevent overlap and report exhaustion
Prevent a new scheduled run from colliding with an unfinished run for the same URL set, unless concurrent runs are an intentional part of your design. When all attempts fail, record a final failure and alert through your normal operations channel.

Record enough information to diagnose failures
For each run, retain:
- Stable run ID, scheduled run time, and attempt number.
- URL, elapsed time, configured timeout, and the stage that timed out—for example, navigation, readiness selector, or screenshot writing.
- Outcome and error details, including whether the attempt was retried or exhausted.
- Final artifact path on success, or the final failure status on exhaustion.
These fields help distinguish a slow page from a browser, network, or job-runner problem. They also make repeated attempts visible instead of hiding them behind one final result.
Configure Playwright retries only when using Playwright Test
If your scheduled command runs a Playwright Test suite, set the test timeout and failed-test retry count in the test configuration. Playwright documents a default per-test timeout of 30 seconds; that is a test-runner default, not necessarily the right navigation timeout for a screenshot job. The retries option controls retries for failed tests, not an external scheduler’s retry behavior. Consult the configuration reference for the current option syntax and defaults.

If the scheduled task is instead a plain script that calls page.goto() and takes a screenshot, or a request to a hosted capture API, implement the retry outside that single capture attempt—in the scheduler or a wrapper. The Playwright Page API documents navigation and direct screenshot capture, including full-page screenshots, but a capture timeout does not itself establish a recurring-job policy.
Troubleshoot by the stage that failed
