Use a Jenkins Declarative Pipeline with a triggers { cron('...') } block to run website screenshot tests on a schedule. Pair it with Playwright for browser-based screenshots and, if you want the build to fail when a page changes visually, Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion. Keep baseline generation and scheduled runs in the same browser environment, then archive test output even when a run fails.
Choose what “screenshot test” means for your job
A scheduled screenshot job can serve two different purposes:
- Capture for human review: save current screenshots so someone can inspect them after the build.
- Visual regression test: compare screenshots with approved baseline images and fail the test when the page differs beyond the assertion’s tolerance.
Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() supports the second workflow. A screenshot capture by itself does not establish whether a visual change is a defect; it creates an image for review.
Create the Playwright visual test
Install Playwright Test in your project and add a test that opens the page, waits for it to reach a suitable state, and asserts the expected screenshot. For example:

});On the first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot. Review the image and commit it only if it represents the intended appearance. Later runs compare the rendered page with that baseline. When a change is intentional, use Playwright’s documented snapshot-update option only after reviewing the new image; otherwise, updating can approve an unintended regression. Schedule the test in a Jenkinsfile
Put the pipeline in a Jenkinsfile in source control and configure a Jenkins Pipeline job to load it. This example uses the Docker agent pattern documented by Playwright, runs a daily job at a Jenkins-selected time, and archives the test output:

Make sure your Playwright configuration writes reports and test results under the paths in archiveArtifacts. Jenkins can archive files only from the build workspace. allowEmptyArchive: true lets the pipeline continue if one of those paths is absent, but it can also make a path mismatch less obvious; inspect the first build and adjust the pattern if needed. Set the Jenkins schedule you actually need
Jenkins cron expressions have five whitespace-separated fields: minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. The schedule runs in the Jenkins controller’s time zone by default.

Jenkins recommends using H where possible to spread periodic jobs instead of making many jobs fire at the same instant. For a required time zone, the trigger reference describes a leading line such as TZ=Europe/London; confirm support and configuration for your installed Jenkins version. Use cron for a recurring schedule. It is not a substitute for change-triggered CI: pollSCM checks for source changes and triggers when changes exist, while a cron trigger runs periodically whether or not source changed.
Keep screenshot comparisons reproducible
Visual baselines are sensitive to rendering conditions. Playwright identifies host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can change screenshots. Run baseline creation and scheduled comparisons in the same environment, and keep the browser and test setup stable. Playwright’s guidance is: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.”

Preserve and inspect build results
The example archives both test results and the HTML report in a Declarative Pipeline post { always { ... } } block. The always condition runs whether the test passes or fails, so a failed visual comparison can still leave artifacts for diagnosis. Jenkins also supports success and failure post conditions when different actions are needed for each outcome; details are in the Pipeline Syntax reference.
Archived files are downloadable from the Jenkins build page. Their retention follows Jenkins build-retention settings; if you need longer-term audit history or wider sharing, plan separate artifact storage and retention rather than assuming build artifacts are permanent.

- The job never runs: Confirm the Jenkinsfile is loaded by the Pipeline job and that the
triggersblock is part of the Declarative Pipeline. Check the controller time zone and, for aTZ=schedule, confirm your Jenkins version and trigger configuration support it. - The job runs at an unexpected time:
His intentionally hashed, soH H * * *is daily but not at a guaranteed hour. Use explicit minute and hour fields if the wall-clock time matters, and account for the controller time zone. - Playwright cannot launch its browser in Docker: Align the Playwright package and container image versions, and use a Playwright image appropriate to the project. Check the agent’s Docker availability and the build log for the underlying launch error.
- A visual test fails after a harmless rendering difference: Compare the actual screenshot with the baseline and check whether the runtime environment changed. Do not update the snapshot until you have reviewed and accepted the page change.
- No artifacts appear on the build page: Verify that output files exist under the workspace and match the
archiveArtifactspattern. If empty archiving is allowed, Jenkins may continue with a warning rather than fail the build. - Only screenshots for inspection are needed: Configure the test runner to save screenshots to a known workspace path and include that path in the archive pattern. A capture-only workflow does not automatically compare images with a baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Jenkins run screenshot checks only when the website code changes?
Yes. A change-triggered job uses SCM hooks or polling rather than a periodic cron schedule; the Jenkins trigger reference distinguishes these purposes.
Does a screenshot assertion prove that every visual difference is a bug?
No. It reports a difference against the approved baseline under the assertion’s configuration; a person should review the diff and decide whether the change is intended.
