If OBS stops after a study video, first identify whether it is a single-file Media Source or a multi-file VLC Video playlist. Turn on Loop for a Media Source or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video source if you want playback to repeat. If the problem happens during a scene change, check the VLC source’s visibility behavior as well.
1. Identify the source and choose the right loop setting
In OBS, look at the Sources list in the scene where playback stops. The fix depends on the source type and whether you want one file or an entire playlist to repeat.
Single video file: Media Source
- In Sources, right-click the Media Source and choose Properties.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the change.
- Test playback through the end of the file to verify that it starts again.
OBS documents Media Source Loop as off by default, but settings may have been changed, so check the installed source’s actual properties. OBS Media Sources documentation also distinguishes looping from Show nothing when playback ends: the latter hides the source after playback finishes; it does not make the video repeat.
Multiple files: VLC Video playlist
- In Sources, right-click the VLC Video source and choose Properties.
- Check the playlist and enable Loop Playlist if the whole playlist should start over after its final item.
- Apply the change and test through the end of the playlist.
OBS documents VLC Video’s Loop Playlist as on by default. Still, inspect the source rather than relying on that default. VLC must be installed; OBS’s documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

2. Decide whether the playlist should repeat or stop after each video
Looping a playlist and pausing after each item are different workflows. Loop Playlist repeats the playlist after its media runs out; it does not create a scheduled pause between individual videos.
If the intended behavior is to play one study video, switch scenes, and resume later, an OBS forum user described a workaround using Advanced Scene Switcher: trigger a scene switch when the current item has less than one second remaining, and set the VLC source to pause when inactive and resume when active. The user reported that pausing did not always work, so treat this as something to test—not a guaranteed fix. The forum discussion describes that schedule and limitation.

There is an extra complication when the playlist loops forever: a forum participant explains that it will not reach a playlist-ended state. To detect the end of an individual item, the discussion recommends monitoring the remaining time instead. This is community guidance, not an official OBS guarantee. 3. Check what happens when the source is hidden
If playback stops or resets when switching scenes, inspect the VLC Video source’s Visibility Behaviour property. OBS documents options to stop playback while the source is hidden and restart it when visible, pause while hidden and resume when visible, or continue playing while hidden. Choose the behavior that matches your scene setup, then test the actual transition that caused the problem.

4. Troubleshoot the symptom systematically
- The final video plays once, then stops: Confirm the source type. Enable Loop for one Media Source file or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video playlist.
- The source disappears at the end: Check whether Show nothing when playback ends is enabled on a Media Source. That controls what is displayed after the file ends, not whether it repeats.
- Playback changes when you switch scenes: Review VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour and test the selected stop, pause, or always-play mode.
- VLC Video is unavailable: Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture; the OBS guide specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- An automation never detects the playlist ending: If the playlist loops continuously, do not depend on a playlist-ended state. Test a remaining-time trigger for the current item instead.
- The settings look right but the issue persists: Reproduce it while checking the relevant source properties and scene transitions. The exact cause cannot be determined without the OBS version, operating system, source configuration, and details of when playback stops.
