Test checkout in two complementary ways: run end-to-end checks for what shoppers can do and see, then compare screenshots at a few stable, important points in the flow. Functional assertions can catch a failed step or incorrect outcome; image comparisons can expose visual regressions such as shifted fields or a missing button. Neither replaces the other, and a screenshot cannot prove that a payment or order was processed correctly.
Define what a successful checkout means for your store
Start with the shopper-visible outcomes your store is expected to deliver. There is no universal checkout sequence or field list: payment, shipping, taxes, discounts, account creation, and regional requirements depend on the store and its integrations. Write acceptance criteria from your business rules and integration contracts before automating the flow.
A scenario might begin with a populated cart, continue through valid customer details and an available shipping choice, apply a supported promotion if applicable, and finish with the expected confirmation or error state. Treat this as a planning example, not a mandatory flow. Decide which outcomes and exceptional cases matter for your store.
Prefer assertions based on rendered labels, roles, visible text, and enabled or disabled states over selectors tied to internal implementation. Playwright’s guidance is that tests should typically interact with the same rendered output a user sees: Playwright best practices.

Separate functional checks from visual comparisons
What functional checks establish
End-to-end assertions should establish that a shopper can complete the required steps and that the expected outcome appears. Depending on the store’s criteria, check form validation, available choices, navigation between states, and the resulting confirmation or error. Run payment and other integration checks only in a controlled test setup supported by the relevant provider; the exact setup is provider-specific.
What screenshots establish
A screenshot comparison checks whether a rendered state differs from an approved reference image. It can reveal presentation changes that a behavioral assertion may not notice, but it does not establish that the backend accepted an order, charged correctly, or persisted data. Use both forms of assertion in the same test suite where appropriate.
Isolate scenarios and control dependencies
Each scenario should have its own cart, customer or session state, and controlled data. Avoid relying on a prior test run or shared mutable staging records. Playwright’s end-to-end guidance recommends test isolation, including cookies, storage, and data, and explains the value of controlled database data: Playwright best practices.

Payment, shipping, tax, and analytics services can introduce external availability or changing responses. Test your store’s responsibility at a controlled boundary, and use network routing or mocked responses when you need predictable third-party behavior. Keep separate integration tests for the actual provider contract where needed; do not make a checkout screenshot test depend on an uncontrolled external page.
Add screenshot checkpoints with Playwright
With Playwright Test, the basic visual assertion is await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On its first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare the current capture with that baseline. PNG is the default image format, and the documentation also permits WebP naming. See Playwright visual comparisons.
Choose a small number of stable checkpoints where appearance matters. Depending on your own acceptance criteria, candidates include the initial checkout form, a populated address and shipping state, validation feedback, and the confirmation view. These are examples to adapt—not universal required states.

The following illustrates the assertion pattern. Replace the example path, locators, and test-data setup with the routes and user-facing labels in your store; the selector names shown are not a prescribed checkout specification.

Screenshot output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment, including browser and operating-system versions, and keep viewport and test data fixed. Playwright specifically recommends using the same environment for consistent captures: visual comparison guidance.

The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing. Animations are disabled by default for screenshot assertions, with options available for animation handling. Wait for the intended checkout state before capture; avoid capturing transient loading, animation, or notification states unless those are what the test is intended to verify.
Masking dynamic content or applying a screenshot-specific stylesheet can reduce noise when genuinely necessary, but only use these techniques if they do not hide a meaningful layout change. Keep dynamic prices, validation text, or totals visible when their correctness or presentation is part of the check. Review visual diffs before updating a baseline
When a comparison fails, inspect the expected, actual, and diff images. Identify what changed—such as a price, validation message, focus treatment, field alignment, button, or order summary—and decide whether it is intentional. A diff is a signal for review, not automatic proof of a defect.

If the design change is intended, update the reference as part of the reviewed change and inspect the snapshot files in version control. Playwright supports updating snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsDo not raise a broad pixel tolerance just to make a noisy test pass. If a tolerance is justified for a known rendering variation, scope it narrowly and retain sensitivity to meaningful changes. The maxDiffPixels option is documented in the Playwright PageAssertions API reference.
Troubleshoot common checkout screenshot failures
