A black screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Find where the picture first disappears: in your encoder, the YouTube Live Control Room preview, the public watch page, or only on one viewer’s device. That point in the stream chain will tell you which checks to make next.
Locate where the picture first goes black
Compare the picture at each stage rather than changing equipment immediately. Check the video in your encoder, then the Live Control Room preview, and finally the public watch page. YouTube’s setup guidance says to wait for the stream preview to appear in Live Control Room before clicking Go live: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview is black | Video source, scene, routing, or encoder health |
| The encoder looks right, but Live Control Room is black | Stream delivery, encoder errors, and YouTube Studio notices |
| The preview looks right, but the watch page is black for many viewers | Connection and delivery; check from independent networks or devices |
| Only one viewer sees black | That viewer’s browser, app, device, or connection |
These patterns are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular fault. A black or placeholder image by itself does not establish that copyright enforcement or any other single cause is responsible.
If the encoder picture is black
Start with the video path into the encoder. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking whether video sources are routed to the encoder and reviewing encoder errors and CPU load: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

- Confirm that the intended relaxation video is selected in the active scene or source, enabled, and not hidden or covered by another source.
- Check that the selected source is actually routed to the encoder output. If you use a local recording or archive, inspect it to see whether the image was captured there.
- Look for encoder errors and unusually high CPU load while the stream is running.
- Update the encoder software, then restart the encoder and recheck its preview.
- If the source path and encoder checks reveal no issue, try another encoder as a diagnostic comparison. This does not by itself prove that the original machine or source is defective.
A good local picture in a recording but a black encoder preview narrows the problem toward the active stream’s scene or output path; a black recording as well points back toward the source or scene being captured.
If the encoder is fine but YouTube is black
When the encoder shows the intended video, check the Live Control Room preview and YouTube Studio for stream status, errors, and notices. Then open the channel’s watch page on a separate device or connection. This helps distinguish an upload or delivery issue from a problem confined to one playback session.

Check the outbound connection
Test upload speed and stability from the streaming location. YouTube advises leaving bandwidth headroom: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” This is general streaming guidance, not a statistic about how often black screens occur. See YouTube streaming tips.
A connection disruption can interrupt delivery even when the encoder’s local picture is healthy. Compare what viewers see across different internet connections: reports from several independent connections are more useful than a single report, but do not prove the encoder is at fault.

Check Studio for content notices
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. Its copyright guidance says that when third-party content is identified, “a placeholder image may replace your live stream.” If the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Check Studio for notices and make sure you have the necessary rights and permissions for music and visuals in a relaxation stream: Copyright issues with live streams.
Do not infer a copyright match from a black screen alone; use Studio’s notices to check whether YouTube has reported one.

If only one viewer sees a black screen
Ask another person to check the watch page, preferably on a different connection. If the stream works for others, the affected viewer should try these playback checks:
- Open the stream in another supported browser or device.
- Close and reopen the app or browser, then reload the watch page.
- Check whether other YouTube videos play normally.
- Try a different network if available; congestion or connection trouble can affect live playback.
YouTube’s general playback guidance recommends testing another supported device: Troubleshoot streaming and video issues. Viewer-side checks are less likely to explain a black preview inside the creator’s encoder.
