Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Playwright screenshots can differ because the pixels depend on more than your page: the operating system, browser and Playwright versions, fonts, headless mode, hardware, and capture settings all affect rendering. The most reliable fix is to generate and compare baselines in the same pinned environment. Playwright recommends running tests in the environment where the baselines were created: Playwright visual comparisons.
Why local and CI screenshots differ
A screenshot test compares rendered pixels, not just the DOM or CSS. The same page can therefore produce a different image when it runs under a different host or browser configuration. Playwright warns that rendering may vary with host OS and version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Browser and platform differences can also affect fonts. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
- Operating system and dependencies: Different system libraries and rendering behavior can change text, spacing, and other details.
- Browser and Playwright versions: Browser binaries are tied to the Playwright version used to install them; mismatches can make local and CI runs behave differently.
- Fonts: A missing or different font can change glyph shapes, line breaks, and element dimensions. A web font that has not loaded at capture time can also alter the image.
- Execution environment: Headed versus headless execution, hardware, and related settings may affect rendering. Playwright’s CI guidance says browsers run headless by default: Playwright in CI.
- Capture geometry: A different viewport, device scale, browser project, or screenshot scale changes the image being compared.
- Page state: Animations, changing content, personalization, and late-loading elements can make captures vary even when the runtime matches.
Make the baseline and CI use the same environment
For a deterministic CI gate, generate the expected snapshot and run the comparison with the same operating system image, Playwright version, browser binaries, and relevant settings. Playwright documents using a container for a consistent visual-regression environment and provides versioned Playwright images in its CI guide.
- Pin the runtime. Use the same pinned Playwright container or an equivalent, fixed OS image for both baseline generation and CI. Avoid generating snapshots on one platform and expecting pixel-identical results from another.
- Install matching browsers and system dependencies. Follow the browser installation steps for the pinned Playwright version. Playwright notes that Linux OS dependencies are not cacheable. If you cache browser binaries, key that cache to the Playwright version.
- Keep project settings aligned. Ensure local and CI use the same configured browser project, viewport, device settings, and screenshot options.
- Regenerate snapshots deliberately after runtime changes. A Playwright, browser, OS-image, or font update can legitimately change pixels. Review the diff before accepting new baselines.
Diagnose a mismatch in a useful order
- Compare versions first. Check the installed
@playwright/testversion and browser version locally and in CI. Confirm CI browser binaries were installed for the same Playwright version, as described in the CI documentation. - Compare host and execution mode. Check operating system and dependencies, selected browser project, headed/headless mode, and hardware-related settings. These can affect rendering; CI browsers are headless by default.
- Check fonts and readiness. Confirm the same fonts are available in both environments and wait until the page’s intended web fonts and important content have loaded before capture.
- Compare screenshot geometry. Match viewport and project configuration. In particular, check whether the assertion uses
scale: 'css'orscale: 'device'. CSS scale records one image pixel per CSS pixel; device scale records device pixels and may create a larger high-DPI image. Details are in the PageAssertions API. - Isolate dynamic regions. If the mismatch is limited to moving, personalized, or otherwise volatile content, wait for the meaningful ready state, then mask or hide only those areas. Do not use broad tolerances to hide a real layout regression.
- Decide whether cross-platform differences are part of the test. If they are, maintain separate baselines for the platforms and browser projects you intend to cover rather than assuming one image should match everywhere.
Stabilize capture-time variation with Playwright assertions
Environment consistency and capture stability solve different problems. Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match. It disables animations and hides the caret by default. The assertion also supports masks, screenshot-only styles, scale selection, and pixel or color tolerances; see the API reference.

Use these controls to handle genuine capture noise, not to paper over different environments. For example, mask a rotating avatar or apply a screenshot-only style to a timestamp if that content is irrelevant to the visual assertion. Keep the mask narrow: hiding a large section can conceal a regression that the test should catch.
When to keep platform-specific baselines
If the goal is to verify cross-platform appearance, test each intended OS and browser project and keep its expected images distinct. Useful baseline axes include operating system, browser project or engine, Playwright and browser versions, and device-scale or viewport geometry. Separate baselines make platform-specific appearance reviewable; they do not imply that all platforms should render pixel-identically. Playwright describes platform-aware snapshot naming and project names for multiple configured projects in its snapshot documentation.

For Playwright Workspaces remote browsers, Microsoft’s guidance explains that a remote browser on a different OS may not match local snapshots and describes using distinct service configuration or an OS-specific snapshot path: Configure visual comparisons for Playwright Workspaces.
Troubleshooting common mismatch patterns
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Text wraps differently or components shift vertically | Different font availability, font loading, or text rendering | Install the same fonts, wait for intended web fonts, and compare OS/runtime images. |
| Many small differences across the whole page | Different OS, browser binaries, Playwright version, or screenshot scale | Pin and align the runtime, browser project, viewport, and scale. |
| Only a chart, timestamp, avatar, or banner differs | Dynamic or personalized page content | Wait for the intended page state, then narrowly mask or hide the volatile region. |
| Failures begin after a dependency or image update | Runtime or browser version changed, or cached browser binaries no longer match | Align browser binaries to the Playwright version and review whether baselines need an intentional update. |
| Local baseline passes locally but not in remote-browser CI | The remote browser may use a different host OS | Use a matching OS environment or maintain an OS-specific snapshot path for the remote configuration. |

If your goal is to capture a website rather than validate your own Playwright rendering environment, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. This does not replace Playwright visual assertions, but it can avoid setting up a browser capture service yourself.

Should I copy snapshot files from my local machine into CI?
Only if the local machine uses the same pinned rendering environment as CI. Otherwise, generate and review the baseline in the environment that will run the comparison.
Does increasing Playwright’s screenshot threshold fix environment differences?
It can permit more pixel variation, but it does not make different operating systems, fonts, or browser versions equivalent. Use tolerances only for small, understood rendering noise.
