First check whether the mismatch happens for other viewers or only on your device. If it follows the stream across devices, investigate the source recording or livestream setup; if it happens only on your device, troubleshoot playback there. A delay in when a live stream reaches you is not necessarily the same as audio and picture being out of sync.
Is it just your device, or is the stream itself out of sync?
Play the same stream on another supported device or browser. If practical, try another internet connection, and ask another viewer whether they hear and see the same mismatch.
- Only one device or playback setup is affected: the problem may be in that playback path. Update and restart the browser or device, close extra tabs, and test another supported device, following YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance.
- Several devices or viewers report the mismatch: that points toward the stream or its source, though it does not prove a particular encoder fault. Give the channel owner this information and, if possible, note whether the problem is present from the start or develops during playback.
This distinction matters because viewer playback and the stream’s source have different possible causes. Changing stream settings before checking the scope can make diagnosis harder.

Delay is not the same as audio/video desynchronization
Live-stream latency is the time between capture and playback. Audio/video desynchronization means the sound and picture are not aligned with each other. A stream can reach viewers later than it was captured while its audio and video remain in sync.

YouTube explains that reducing latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and can increase buffering. Network congestion can delay live programming even when average connection capacity seems adequate; YouTube says, “Network congestion and other factors may also cause live streaming issues, which can delay your stream.” See Understand live streaming latency. These factors can make playback feel delayed, but a latency choice is not a guaranteed fix for an audio track that is actually offset from the video.
If you are watching someone else’s sleep-sounds stream
After comparing another device or viewer, use the result to decide which side to investigate. If only your setup is affected, try the playback troubleshooting steps above. If others also notice the mismatch, report it to the channel owner and distinguish the symptom: is the sound consistently early or late relative to the picture, does it drift over time, or is the whole live stream merely arriving late?

- Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
- Find your signature sound: Scarlett 4th Gen's improved Air mode lifts vocals and guitars to the front of the mix, adding musical presence and rich harmonic drive to your recordings

Sleep-sounds streams may show little movement, so a still image can make timing harder to judge. If the video does contain visible movement, compare the sound with an event that has a clear corresponding picture. Do not infer an encoder fault from a single viewer’s experience.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
For a prerecorded upload or looping recording
Inspect the recording before uploading or looping it. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance warns: “If your audio track is shorter or longer than your video, your audio and video may not sync correctly.” Check that the audio and video track durations match and that they stay aligned through the file. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps for uploaded videos.
For a live encoder
- Test before going live. Use sound and visual movement representative of the actual stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.
- Review health messages before changing settings. YouTube’s Live Streaming API health guidance lists configuration messages involving audio codecs and sample rates, inconsistent settings between primary and backup streams, and insufficient incoming video for smooth streaming. Treat a message as a lead to investigate, not proof that it caused the sync symptom.
- Check the published encoder guidance. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio. Its encoder guide specifies 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio; it recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. These are setup recommendations, not a promise that changing them will correct an offset. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Choose latency for the kind of stream. For a non-interactive ambient stream, YouTube describes Normal latency as the option intended for non-interactive streams, with the lowest viewer buffering among its listed latency choices. Lower latency means less read-ahead buffer and can increase exposure to buffering. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you notice | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The mismatch appears only on one device or browser. | A playback-path issue is possible; this alone does not identify the cause. | Restart or update the browser or device, close extra tabs, and compare another supported device or connection. |
| Multiple viewers report sound consistently ahead of or behind the picture. | The issue may be in the stream or source. | For a recording, check track durations and alignment. For a live stream, inspect encoder output and stream-health messages. |
| The whole live broadcast arrives late or buffers, but sound and picture remain aligned. | This sounds more like latency or buffering than relative audio/video desynchronization. | Consider the latency setting and network conditions; lower latency reduces buffering time but can make buffering more likely. |
| Sync starts correctly and then drifts. | The symptom is useful diagnostic information, but it does not establish a particular cause. | Compare another viewer and inspect the source or encoder path; note when the drift starts and whether it appears on every device. |
