To run visual regression tests for a Laravel site, capture the same page in a controlled browser and viewport on each run, compare it with a reviewed baseline, and inspect any differences before accepting an update. Laravel Dusk can capture screenshots from PHP browser tests; Playwright Test offers built-in screenshot assertions for teams willing to use a JavaScript runner. A screenshot difference is a prompt to review the page, not proof that the application is broken.
Choose a browser-testing foundation
For a new Laravel project: consider Pest 4
Laravel’s current Dusk documentation recommends Pest for browser testing in new projects, while continuing to document Dusk’s browser automation and screenshot methods. The documentation surfaced for this guide is for Laravel 13.x; check the documentation version that matches your installed Laravel and Dusk versions before adopting an API. Laravel Dusk documentation
For an existing Dusk suite: keep the PHP workflow
If your project already uses Dusk, its browser tests can capture named screenshots without moving browser actions into another language. Capturing an image does not itself compare it with a known-good image: add a compatible comparison tool or hosted review integration to establish that second step.
For a JavaScript browser-test stack: use Playwright Test
Playwright Test is a separate JavaScript test-runner option, not a Laravel-specific PHP API. Its toHaveScreenshot() assertion compares a new screenshot with a stored expected snapshot. It suits teams already using Playwright or prepared to maintain a separate browser-test stack. Playwright screenshot comparisons and the snapshot assertion API

Build a repeatable screenshot test
- Choose a page or component. Start with a route whose appearance matters, such as account settings or a checkout summary. Seed predictable records and use a known application state. Avoid timestamps, random content, live data, rotating banners, and other variation unless the variation itself is under test.
- Fix the capture conditions. Choose the browser/runtime and viewport for each scenario. Treat desktop and mobile widths as separate test cases rather than relying on whichever display happens to run the test. Keep browser version, operating system, fonts, device scale, and headless settings stable between baseline generation and test runs.
- Wait for the page to settle. Navigate to the target, wait for the relevant content, fonts, and images, and prevent animations or transient UI from changing between captures. The exact wait strategy depends on the application; the documentation does not prescribe a single Laravel-specific wait recipe.
- Capture a named image. Take a whole-page screenshot for a page-level check, a selected-element capture for a component, or responsive captures for a set of viewport scenarios.
- Compare with an approved baseline. Use a comparison assertion or integration to detect changed pixels. Store and review expected images according to that tool’s workflow.
- Inspect every meaningful difference. Decide whether the change is intended before replacing a baseline. Blindly accepting a new image can turn an actual visual regression into the new expected result.
- Keep local and CI environments aligned. Prefer the same browser/runtime image, fonts, viewport, and rendering settings. If diffs suddenly appear, investigate environment drift before loosening comparison settings.
Capture screenshots with Laravel Dusk
The following examples reflect the current official Dusk documentation. Confirm that the methods and configuration match the Dusk version installed in your project. Dusk stores regular screenshots under tests/Browser/screenshots.
Capture a full page
$browser->visit('/account/settings')
->screenshot('account-settings-desktop');
Capture one element
$browser->screenshotElement('#profile-card', 'profile-card');
Capture responsive screenshots
$browser->responsiveScreenshots('account-settings');
These calls capture images; they do not by themselves assert that the images match an approved reference. Add a comparison stage to your test workflow.

Choose how to compare and review images
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test screenshot assertions | A team already using Playwright or comfortable maintaining JavaScript browser tests. | Adds a separate browser-test stack to a PHP application; rendering conditions must be controlled. |
| Dusk plus local or community comparison | A team that wants browser actions in PHP/Dusk and reference images managed in its repository. | The team owns baseline storage and review. Check package compatibility and maintenance for the installed Laravel and Dusk versions. One community package is laravel-dusk-visual-assert. |
| Dusk plus Percy integration | A team that wants a hosted visual-review workflow. | Requires an external service, account/token configuration, and vendor-specific workflow. The cited Dusk integration is community-maintained: Laravel Dusk visual testing integration. |
Before selecting an option, check its baseline review flow, CI behavior, browser control, and maintenance requirements. For community integrations and packages, inspect Composer constraints, release activity, and behavior in your own CI; compatibility with a current Laravel release is not established merely by a package’s existence.
Keep screenshot diffs useful
Control sources of visual noise
- Use deterministic test data and stable application state.
- Keep the viewport and browser/runtime configuration identical to the baseline run.
- Ensure required fonts, images, and page content are loaded before capture.
- Mask or otherwise control variable regions when they are not the subject of the test.
- Investigate changes in operating system, browser version or settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode before treating a pixel difference as an application defect. Playwright documents these as possible causes of screenshot variation. Playwright’s screenshot guidance
Do not use visual tests as the only tests
A matching screenshot does not prove that a button works, a route enforces authorization, text is meaningful, or the page is accessible. Keep functional assertions and appropriate accessibility checks alongside visual comparisons. The Dusk/Percy integration describes visual testing as an additional tool, not a replacement for other browser, unit, or feature tests.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Many unrelated regions differ at once | Browser, operating system, fonts, device scale, headless mode, or viewport changed. | Compare the current run configuration with the baseline environment and restore consistent inputs before changing comparison sensitivity. |
| Only dynamic content differs | Timestamps, random values, live data, rotating banners, or transient UI are not controlled. | Seed predictable data, freeze or mask variable content where appropriate, and wait for the page to settle. |
| Image dimensions do not match | The viewport or device-scale setting differs from the baseline. | Make the viewport and scale explicit for each scenario; keep responsive sizes as distinct cases. |
| A baseline update makes the test pass but the page looks wrong | The changed reference image was accepted without review. | Review the diff in context and restore the prior baseline if the change was unintended. |
| A Dusk comparison package fails after a framework upgrade | The community package may not support the installed Laravel or Dusk version. | Check Composer constraints, release activity, and CI behavior for your versions before depending on it. |

For a screenshot returned by one HTTP request, use ScreenshotNeo. It accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. This API can capture pages, but it does not replace a browser-test runner, an approved visual baseline, or review of diffs.
Example cURL call, adapted to capture the settings page:
