To configure visual testing in Chromatic, choose where the page states come from: use Storybook for repeatable component states, or connect an existing Playwright, Vitest, or Cypress test suite for browser-driven coverage. Create a Chromatic project, configure its integration, review an initial run, then add the project token to CI as a secret and decide how visual changes should affect the build.

Choose the source of visual test states

Chromatic can capture states from Storybook, Playwright, Vitest, or Cypress. Pick the workflow that matches what you want to verify:

Approach What it captures Best fit Key setup checks
Storybook Visual Tests addon Stories representing component states and variants Broad, isolated UI coverage, including mocked loading or failure states Storybook 7.6 or higher; addon and project configuration
Playwright integration Browser-driven page journeys and interactions Whole-page and integrated user journeys already covered by Playwright tests Supported Playwright version, Chrome in the Playwright configuration, and archive location
Vitest integration Component states from Vitest browser tests Projects whose component tests already run through Vitest Vitest 4.0.0 or higher and @vitest/browser-playwright
Cypress integration States generated by the existing Cypress tests Projects already using Cypress for browser testing Check Chromatic’s current Cypress setup guide and project configuration

Storybook and end-to-end coverage are complementary rather than interchangeable: stories make it practical to cover many focused states, while browser journeys verify integrated behavior. Chromatic documents using two projects linked to the same repository for that combined workflow, with a separate project token and CLI run for each.

How to set up the Storybook visual testing workflow

  1. Create a Chromatic project. Obtain its project token and keep it private. The CLI builds and uploads Storybook to Chromatic, where UI tests run.
  2. Install the addon. From the project directory run npx storybook@latest add @chromatic-com/storybook. Use the equivalent command documented for your package manager if you use Yarn or pnpm. This addon path requires Storybook 7.6 or higher.
  3. Authenticate and connect the project. In Storybook, authenticate with Chromatic and select or create the project. The addon adds the project identifiers and configuration it needs.
  4. Run Storybook and inspect the first results. Start Storybook, use the sidebar’s play control to run tests, and inspect highlighted differences in the Visual Tests panel.
  5. Handle the baseline deliberately. Accept a change if it is intentional and should become the new baseline. If it is unexpected, fix the UI and rerun instead. Baselines accepted through the addon sync to the cloud.

The addon uses chromatic.config.json. Its configuration can include projectId, buildScriptName, debug, and zip. If you need a separate environment configuration, point the Storybook configuration at a different config file. In a monorepo, use separate Chromatic configuration for each subproject and set that project’s Storybook base, build, and configuration paths correctly.

How to configure Chromatic for Playwright page tests

Use the Playwright integration when your existing browser tests define the page journeys and interactions you want to snapshot. Install chromatic and @chromatic-com/playwright, use Chromatic’s test and expect integration in the tests, then invoke the CLI with --playwright.

During the test run, the integration captures an archive; Chromatic uploads it and generates snapshots and diffs in its cloud environment. Before running it, verify the following:

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 22 inch class (21.5″ viewable) Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • The documented setup currently supports Playwright 1.38.0 and above. This requirement can change, so compare the live setup guide with the version pinned in your project.
  • Chrome is included in the Playwright configuration. Chromatic relies on Chrome for snapshotting.
  • If a monorepo uses a non-default Playwright outputDir, set CHROMATIC_ARCHIVE_LOCATION to the same archive location and update the related archive scripts or configuration paths.

For Cypress and Vitest, follow their integration-specific setup rather than applying Storybook-only configuration. The current Vitest instructions specify Vitest 4.0.0 or higher and @vitest/browser-playwright. In that flow, the test run archives component DOM, styles, and assets; Chromatic renders snapshots in multiple browsers and uses pixel diffing.

Run Chromatic in CI and review pull requests

  1. Store the token securely. Add CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN to your CI provider’s secret store. Do not commit the token in repository files.
  2. Install dependencies and prepare the project. Run the normal dependency installation and any tests or build preparation your workflow requires.
  3. Invoke Chromatic. Run chromatic or your configured package script. For integration-driven runs, use the matching mode, such as --playwright, --vitest, or --cypress.
  4. Run on the branches and events you want reviewed. Linked GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket repositories can receive pull request status checks.
  5. Choose a change policy. Decide whether visual changes should block the job for review, pass without acceptance, or be accepted automatically.

Custom CI uses ordinary workflow steps: install project dependencies, run the required tests, and invoke Chromatic. The official CI instructions document Storybook and the --vitest, --playwright, and --cypress modes.

Understand the two ways to avoid a failing job

  • --exit-zero-on-changes lets the process exit successfully when changes are detected without accepting those changes. The visual differences remain for review.
  • autoAcceptChanges accepts detected changes automatically. This changes the baseline and removes the manual review gate.

These settings do different things. Use automatic acceptance only if that baseline policy is intentional; an exit-zero run does not mean the changes have been approved.

Control coverage and build time

For larger Storybook projects, onlyChanged (TurboSnap) skips stories Chromatic considers unaffected by a change, while forceRebuild tests everything. They address different needs: the former narrows work to affected stories; the latter requests a full run. Check the current configuration reference and your project’s change-review requirements before enabling either.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • The Storybook addon cannot be installed or run: check that the project meets the documented Storybook 7.6-or-higher requirement, then confirm the package-manager command and dependencies.
  • Playwright snapshots do not run: confirm Chrome is part of the Playwright configuration and that the locked Playwright version meets the current integration requirement.
  • The archive is missing in a monorepo: compare CHROMATIC_ARCHIVE_LOCATION with Playwright’s configured outputDir; update the archive scripts and configuration paths to point to the same location.
  • The CI job cannot authenticate: check that CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN is defined in the CI secret store for the job and that it belongs to the intended Chromatic project.
  • The CI job fails after a UI change: if UI Test or UI Review is enabled, a change can produce a non-zero exit code. Review the diff, fix unintended changes, or use --exit-zero-on-changes if the job should pass while leaving the change unaccepted.
  • The wrong Storybook or project is being built: verify the configured build script, Storybook base/build/config paths, and project ID. Monorepo subprojects should have their own configuration.

Chromatic’s package requirements, CLI options, and CI behavior are documented in live guides and can change. Verify the current setup instructions against the project’s lockfile when implementing a particular toolchain.
