Authenticate once in a test setup, save the browser session securely, open the protected page with that state, wait for a page-specific ready condition, and capture a screenshot for comparison with an approved baseline. A screenshot alone is not a visual regression test: the workflow also needs controlled rendering conditions and a deliberate review of differences.
1. Prepare a safe, repeatable test login
Use a dedicated test identity, not a personal account. Authenticate through the application UI or an approved API path in setup, then verify a reliable logged-in condition before saving browser state. Playwright recommends keeping authentication state under playwright/.auth and adding that directory to .gitignore; cookies and headers in the state file may grant access, so treat it as a secret. - For role-based pages, create a separate state file for each role and use the matching state in each test.
- A shared account is suitable only if parallel tests cannot conflict. If tests change shared server-side data, isolate accounts—for example, one per worker—or otherwise isolate test data.
- Restrict access to state files in CI and regenerate them when credentials or session policies change. Avoid destructive actions against production accounts.
MFA, CAPTCHA, SSO, and device-bound authentication require a solution approved for your test environment and identity-provider configuration. Do not bypass access controls; coordinate a suitable test identity or supported test flow with the application and identity-provider owners.
2. Load the authenticated state and wait for the page
Use the saved state to create an authenticated browser context, then navigate directly to the protected route. Before capturing, assert something specific that means the page is ready: a heading, a known table row, or completion of a controlled API call. A fixed sleep is less reliable because it can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Cypress likewise recommends confirming that the page has stopped changing before taking a snapshot: Cypress visual testing guidance.

Make the page’s inputs predictable where possible. Use fixture data or stub volatile API responses, control animations if the application and test setup allow it, and freeze time-dependent content when appropriate. Keep the browser, operating system, viewport, device scale, fonts, and headless settings consistent between baseline creation and CI comparisons: rendering can vary across environments.
3. Capture and compare against a baseline
Playwright Test
Playwright Test has screenshot assertions. After loading the stored state and reaching the ready condition, call await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() or use a named screenshot assertion. The first run creates a reference image; subsequent runs compare against it. See Playwright visual comparisons.

Cypress
cy.screenshot() captures an image; by itself it does not compare the image with an approved baseline. Add a visual testing integration for comparison and its review workflow. Cypress lists integrations including Applitools, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, and SmartBear VisualTest; select based on framework support, capture scope, masking controls, review process, browser coverage, data policy, and current pricing. Choose the route that fits your test stack

There is no universally best tool established by these capabilities alone. Start with the browser framework already used by the team, then add a service when its specific review or rendering features solve a real need. 4. Keep diffs useful without masking defects
Use checkpoints that represent meaningful page or component states. Mask only small areas that are genuinely unpredictable, such as a third-party widget that cannot be controlled. A broad mask or permissive page-wide threshold can conceal layout regressions. For focused review, element-level comparisons can be easier to interpret; reserve full-page captures for cases where full-page layout coverage matters. 5. Review and approve baseline changes deliberately
When a comparison differs, determine whether the difference is an intended UI change or a defect. Accept a new reference only for an approved change; otherwise retain the existing baseline and fix the application. Treat baseline updates like code changes: an indiscriminate bulk approval makes future tests less useful. Does saving browser state mean my visual test no longer needs to log in?
It avoids repeating the login flow for each page test, but the saved session must still be valid and protected; renew it through your approved setup when it expires or credentials change.
