A Raspberry Pi can keep an FFmpeg stream going through a monsoon power cut only if the whole streaming chain stays powered and connected: the Pi, its video source, the router and modem or ONT, and any other essential equipment. Use a model-appropriate power supply, put every required device on backup power, leave upload headroom, and test power-loss and network-recovery behavior on the actual setup. No single UPS size, runtime, or internet provider recommendation fits every location in India.
What has to stay online for the stream to survive?
A live stream is only as resilient as its weakest required link. If the Pi stays on but the router loses power, FFmpeg cannot reach YouTube. If the network stays up but the Pi browns out or reboots, the encoder stops. Start by tracing the stream from its source to the internet and listing every device that needs power.
Make a power-and-network inventory
- Encoder: Record the Raspberry Pi model, storage device, cooling, and any USB peripherals. These affect the power supply and workload.
- Video and audio source: Include the camera, capture device, microphone interface, or other equipment actually feeding FFmpeg. If a source has its own power supply, it needs backup too.
- Local network: Include the router, modem or optical network terminal (ONT), and any switch or wireless access point on the route to the internet.
- Upstream service: Check whether your internet connection remains available during a local power cut. A powered router does not prove that the provider’s equipment or service is still operating.
Draw the route your stream takes, then mark which devices are powered by mains and which are powered by the proposed backup. A Raspberry Pi-only battery cannot keep the stream live if a required camera or network device goes dark.
How do I choose power for the Pi and network equipment?
Match the supply to the exact Pi model
Raspberry Pi’s model-specific guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommendations for the models listed below. Check the current power table for your exact board before buying: a supply’s rated maximum is not the same as the Pi’s actual draw, and neither number tells you how long a battery will last.

| Raspberry Pi model | Recommended supply | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 or Raspberry Pi 500 | 5 V, 5 A | With a 5 V, 3 A supply, the Pi limits peripherals to 600 mA. |
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B or Raspberry Pi 400 | 5 V, 3 A | Use the model’s recommended supply and allow for attached devices. |
| Raspberry Pi 3 | 5 V, 2.5 A | Use the model’s recommended supply and allow for attached devices. |
Raspberry Pi’s documentation recommends an official power supply suitable for the model being powered. Long or unsuitable cables can also cause voltage loss, so test the installed cable and connected peripherals under the actual encoding workload rather than assuming a board boots reliably just because it powers on.
Size backup for the complete load, not a guessed runtime
There is no substantiated universal UPS runtime for a Pi livestream. Runtime depends on the installed load, battery capacity and condition, conversion losses, the UPS output and connectors, and how it transfers from mains. Measure the power draw of your deployed setup and check the UPS manufacturer’s runtime information for a comparable load; confirm the actual duration with a controlled test.
Put every essential device on backup, including the router and modem or ONT. Check that the UPS has suitable outputs and that the transfer does not reset equipment. If it exposes battery status and your system supports a safe shutdown, configure and test that behavior before the battery is nearly exhausted. Raspberry Pi documentation warns that sudden power loss can risk storage integrity; a backup battery is not a substitute for a clean shutdown when power cannot be sustained.
Will my internet work during a power outage in India?
It depends on the specific provider, access technology, and location. The fact that your home router has UPS power does not establish that the provider’s local equipment has power or that the connection will stay available. This guidance supports no India-wide provider recommendation or address-specific outage guarantee.

Check the connection at the address where you stream
- Ask your provider how service is affected by a local mains outage and whether the equipment serving your connection has backup power.
- Measure stable outbound upload at the times the stream will run, including periods when the connection is busy. A single speed-test peak is not a reliability guarantee.
- Where practical, test a wired connection and compare its stability with Wi-Fi in the installed location.
- If you plan a backup connection, verify that it can sustain the required upload and consider whether it shares the same likely failure, such as local power loss or congestion.
Treat any claimed backup-network continuity as something to verify locally. Powering the Pi and router cannot remedy an unavailable upstream connection.
Which YouTube and FFmpeg settings should I use?
Start with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then choose a conservative output that your Pi and measured connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; four seconds is the maximum interval in the guidance accessed in 2026. Use a supported codec such as H.264 and configure audio to suit the actual stream. The right resolution and frame rate depend on the source, encoder workload, and available upload.
H.264 bitrate guidance from YouTube
The following are YouTube’s surfaced H.264 recommendations accessed in 2026, not guarantees of Pi encoding performance or of a stable connection. YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its current table when configuring a different combination.
| Output | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused: the total stream bitrate should not exceed the available upload, with that margin left over. Use a stable measured upload figure rather than the advertised plan speed. If the connection fluctuates, select a lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate that leaves more room. Audio contributes to the total bitrate too.

Choose whether FFmpeg encodes or passes through video
The Pi’s model, input format, and FFmpeg pipeline determine how much work encoding requires; no particular model-and-input combination is specified here, so there is no defensible universal performance claim. If the input is already encoded in a format and settings YouTube accepts, passing that video through instead of transcoding can avoid an extra encoding workload. If FFmpeg must encode, test the chosen resolution and frame rate for sustained operation on the actual Pi and monitor stream health before relying on it unattended.
Use the stream key for the intended YouTube live stream and keep it private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that destination. Choose RTMPS where supported, and verify the destination, codec, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current setup guidance. The exact FFmpeg input options and command depend on the camera or capture device and are not interchangeable across setups.
How do I restart FFmpeg automatically if it disconnects?
Automatic process restart is a recovery layer, not a complete outage solution. A service manager can relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits, but it cannot restore missing camera input, internet access, valid credentials, or exhausted power. A process that remains alive while its connection is stalled may also need different handling from one that exits; verify the behavior of your FFmpeg build, options, and operating system rather than assuming one reconnect command works everywhere.
Set up and verify supervision
- First make the FFmpeg command work reliably in the foreground with the intended input, YouTube destination, and stream key. Keep the key out of public scripts, logs, and support posts.
- Run that known-good command under the service manager available on your Pi OS, configured to restart the process after an unexpected exit. Use the service manager’s own documentation for the installed OS and version.
- Enable the service to start at boot, then reboot the Pi while power and network are stable. Confirm that the source is available and the stream reaches YouTube without manual login.
- Test a controlled network interruption and a separate forced FFmpeg exit. Observe whether the process exits, restarts, reconnects, and resumes sending video; check YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and confirm what viewers see.
- Restore the network and verify recovery, rather than treating a running process or a successful service status as proof that the live stream is healthy.
Because the input device and OS are unspecified, a single copy-and-paste FFmpeg command or service file would risk giving you the wrong input syntax or recovery behavior. Validate the actual command and service configuration on the deployed system.

How should I test a monsoon-outage setup before relying on it?
Test the complete chain before an unattended broadcast. YouTube advises testing the complete stream, monitoring its health, and checking backup-encoder failover. The checks below are recommended procedures, not results of a test performed on your equipment.
- Start a private or otherwise controlled stream and watch both the stream output and YouTube Live Control Room.
- Interrupt mains power at the setup’s normal point of entry. Confirm that the Pi, source, router, modem or ONT, and switches remain powered without an unexpected reboot or undervoltage.
- Check picture, sound, upload stability, and YouTube stream-health messages while on backup power.
- Separately interrupt the internet connection, then restore it. Observe whether FFmpeg reconnects or exits, whether supervision relaunches it, and whether YouTube receives video again.
- Test power restoration and a full Pi reboot. Confirm that the service starts unattended and that the intended video source and YouTube destination are selected.
- Record how long the complete installation actually operated on battery and under what load. Do not use that one test as a guarantee for a different battery condition or configuration.
If you use a second encoder as failover, test the handoff and confirm the intended YouTube event behavior; backup power, process restart, network failover, and encoder failover are distinct recovery cases.
What about copyright and reused content?
Power continuity does not establish that you have the right to stream the material. Make sure you are authorized to broadcast every video and audio element, including music, recordings, and third-party footage. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content; rules and enforcement can change, so do not assume that looping a recording makes it exempt. A copyright-safety checklist is available at StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
