Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Windows updates can require a restart, which ends a stream running from OBS on that PC. To reduce disruption, set Windows active hours and schedule required restarts for a suitable maintenance window. To resume automatically after a reboot, configure OBS to launch with streaming enabled, then rehearse the entire recovery sequence. These steps help manage interruptions; they do not guarantee that every update, sign-in, or YouTube event will recover unattended.
Know which part of the problem you are solving
Active hours and scheduled restarts help avoid an inconvenient interruption. They do not restart OBS after Windows has restarted. OBS launch automation addresses that second problem, while OBS automatic reconnect applies when OBS is still running and needs to reconnect to a streaming service.
This guide assumes a Windows PC running OBS and sending an encoder stream to YouTube. Menu labels and update behavior can vary by Windows version and whether the device is managed by an organization. If you use other streaming software or a different destination, check its documentation for equivalent controls.
Reduce the chance of an update interrupting the stream
Set Windows active hours
Open Windows Settings and go to Windows Update. Find the active-hours control and set the hours to cover the times you normally need the PC to remain available. Active hours help Windows avoid restarting at inconvenient times; they are not a permanent block on restarts. Microsoft notes that a PC may occasionally need to restart to finish installing updates. Microsoft’s active-hours guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Schedule or briefly defer a required restart
When Windows Update says a restart is required, use the restart scheduling option on the Windows Update screen to choose a time when an interruption is acceptable. If you need a short deferral, use Windows Update’s pause control and check its displayed limit. Pausing is temporary: Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely and will eventually need to be downloaded and installed. Do not treat pausing updates as a long-term way to protect an always-on stream. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the limits.
If viewers expect an uninterrupted fireplace stream, plan for the maintenance window as an outage: communicate it where appropriate, then complete the update deliberately rather than relying on Windows to choose a convenient time.
Configure OBS to launch and start streaming after Windows starts
OBS documents the Windows launch parameter --startstreaming, described as “Automatically start streaming.” It is a way to ask OBS to begin streaming when launched; it does not itself ensure that OBS launches after every reboot. The following setup is an approach to configure and test, not a guarantee across all Windows accounts, task permissions, scenes, sources, or network conditions.

Option 1: Add the parameter to an OBS shortcut
- Locate the OBS shortcut you intend to use. Right-click it and open Properties.
- In the Target field, retain the existing path to
obs64.exeand add a space followed by--startstreamingafter the closing quotation mark. The result should follow this pattern:"C:pathtoobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Keep the actual path from your shortcut; do not replace it with the example path. - Save the shortcut changes. Launch OBS with that shortcut while signed in to the Windows account that owns the OBS profile and stream configuration.
- Confirm that the expected scene, audio, and YouTube destination load and that streaming begins as intended. Do not leave this launch behavior untested on the live channel.
OBS documents the launch parameter and shortcut method in its launch parameters guide.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Option 2: Use Task Scheduler for a boot or sign-in launch
A scheduled task can launch OBS when its chosen trigger occurs, but the trigger and permissions matter. OBS specifically says that for a scheduled-task launch, set the working directory (the task’s Start in… field) to the folder containing obs64.exe. Use the executable path on your own PC, and configure the task for the Windows user account that has the required OBS profile and access to the stream.
Choose whether the task should run at system startup or when that user signs in based on your setup. A startup trigger may not reproduce an interactive user’s session or make every source available; a sign-in trigger depends on the account session being started. Rehearse the exact trigger, permissions, and login path you intend to rely on. OBS’s launch guide documents the parameter and working-directory requirement, but does not guarantee every task configuration.

Keep OBS reconnect and reboot recovery separate
OBS has an automatic reconnect control under Settings > Advanced. It may help when the stream connection drops while OBS remains open. It does not launch OBS after Windows has rebooted. For a reboot, Windows must start OBS again; the launch parameter or scheduled-task approach handles that separate step. See the OBS connection troubleshooting overview and OBS launch parameters.
Check YouTube’s stream destination and event controls
An OBS encoder stream needs the YouTube stream URL and stream key. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the intended stream or event and review its auto-start and auto-stop choices. YouTube says a stream key should be treated like a password; do not display it in a screenshot, share it, or include it in a public task or script. When reusing stream settings, YouTube copies the selected auto-start and auto-stop choices, so verify them rather than assuming a new event has the behavior you want. Details are in YouTube’s encoder streaming setup and live stream settings.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. This is an archive behavior, not a promise that an interrupted stream will resume as the same event; check the current event state and stream health after recovery. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and monitoring stream health in its live encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Rehearse the full restart before trusting it
OBS recommends testing before a stream, and YouTube advises testing encoder settings and monitoring stream health. Run a controlled rehearsal on the same PC, Windows account, OBS profile, sources, and destination you plan to use. Do not begin by experimenting during an audience-critical broadcast.
- Confirm the fireplace scene, video or media source, audio, and YouTube destination work before restarting.
- Perform a planned Windows restart under conditions that resemble the update restart you are preparing for.
- Observe whether Windows reaches the expected account session and whether the shortcut or scheduled task actually starts OBS.
- Check OBS for the correct scene and active connection. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health; then verify public playback from another device if the event is meant to be public.
- If any step fails, correct that specific dependency and repeat the rehearsal before relying on unattended recovery.
The result depends on more than OBS: Windows update and restart policy, user-session behavior, task triggers and permissions, profile and source availability, network access, YouTube event state, and stream-key validity can all affect recovery. The official guidance does not establish one configuration that guarantees recovery through every update reboot.
Troubleshoot a stream that does not return
- Windows restarted, but OBS did not open: Check that the shortcut or task points to the actual
obs64.exe, that the launch parameter is attached to the executable command, and that the task trigger and account permissions match the intended startup path. For a scheduled task, verify Start in… points to the folder containing the OBS executable. - OBS opened but did not start streaming: Confirm the instance was launched with
--startstreamingand that the expected OBS profile and destination are loaded. Check that the intended YouTube event is available and that its stream key is still valid. - OBS is open but the connection is offline: Check the network connection, YouTube stream URL and key, and OBS connection status. Automatic reconnect may address a dropped connection while OBS is running, but it cannot recover an OBS process that never launched.
- YouTube receives the encoder but does not behave as expected: Review the Live Control Room event and its auto-start/auto-stop selections, including whether settings were copied from another stream. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health rather than assuming that an OBS status alone confirms public playback.
- The task works manually but not after restart: Recheck whether the selected trigger runs in the required user session and whether permissions or source availability differ at that time. Repeat the exact restart rehearsal; success from an interactive shortcut does not prove the boot-time task is configured correctly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube fireplace stream that does not depend on a home Windows PC staying on, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
