If a particular font face or character set is essential, explicitly request it with document.fonts.load() and check that it loaded rather than assuming that a resolved promise means the preferred font succeeded.
Wait for the content, then wait for its fonts
A browser’s load event does not by itself verify that the intended typeface is usable for the text in your screenshot. Use the CSS Font Loading API after navigation and after triggering any content that can introduce new font use. document.fonts.ready resolves after the document’s currently required font loads and related layout work have settled. It does not prove that a particular custom font succeeded; a page can render with a fallback instead. See MDN’s CSS Font Loading API reference.
Runnable Playwright example
This Node.js example uses Playwright’s library API. Replace the URL and content locator with the page and meaningful content state you need to capture. Install Playwright and its browser before running it.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'load' });
// Wait for the content that belongs in the screenshot.
await page.getByRole('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
// Optional: explicitly request the face and sample used by the page.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.load('400 16px "Example Sans"', 'Representative text 0123');
await document.fonts.ready;
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The font name, weight, style, sample text, URL, and locator are examples; change them to match the page’s actual CSS and content. The font shorthand passed to document.fonts.load() should match the face being rendered. A sample containing representative characters matters when a font uses subsets.

Trigger lazy content before the font wait
If the screenshot includes lazy-loaded images, below-the-fold sections, or content revealed by interaction, trigger and wait for that content first. Then wait for fonts. A later-rendered region may cause the page to need additional font resources, so checking readiness before it appears can be premature.
Choose the right font check
| Method | Use it when | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
document.fonts.ready |
You need the fonts required by the page’s current rendered content to settle. | Required font loading and related layout work have completed; it does not establish that a preferred face succeeded. |
document.fonts.load(font, text), then document.fonts.ready |
A named family, style, weight, or character sample is critical. | Requests matching font faces for the supplied CSS font shorthand and text, then waits for current font work to settle. Check the relevant face status if success is mandatory. |
The API exposes font face states including unloaded, loading, loaded, and failed. If the intended typeface must be present, inspect the matching FontFace.status values or handle the targeted load result explicitly instead of allowing fallback text to pass silently. The API details are documented by MDN.

Make repeated captures visually comparable
Waiting for fonts removes one source of variability, not all of them. Keep the capture environment and screenshot settings aligned with the baseline, especially for visual regression tests.
- Use the same browser engine and version, operating-system image, viewport dimensions, and device-scale factor where practical.
- Choose the screenshot scale deliberately: Playwright’s
cssscale produces one output pixel per CSS pixel, whiledeviceuses device pixels. - Wait for the actual content state rather than relying on DOM creation or an arbitrary delay.
- Stabilize animations, hover states, cursors, carets, timestamps, and rotating content. Move the mouse away from hover-sensitive controls if they affect the image.
- Hide or mask volatile elements when they are not part of what you are testing.
- When a required font fails, make that an explicit test outcome; knowingly accept fallback only when it is suitable for the screenshot’s purpose.
Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with operating system, browser and platform, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its visual comparison guidance covers screenshot options for animations and volatile elements: Visual comparisons.

One-off or custom capture
Use page.screenshot() when your script needs to save an image or full-page capture. The API accepts screenshot options such as output path, full-page capture, and scale. See the Playwright Page API.
Baseline comparison in Playwright Test
Use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() when you are writing a Playwright Test visual assertion and maintaining a screenshot baseline. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparison; it is not a method on every ordinary Playwright script. See Playwright PageAssertions.

Common font and screenshot failures
- The screenshot uses a fallback font:
document.fonts.readycan settle even when a face fails. Check the target face’s status, confirm the CSS family, style, and weight match, and inspect font resource errors. - The screenshot changes after scrolling or interaction: the content may request fonts only after it is revealed. Trigger the target state, wait for its content, then repeat the font readiness check.
- A fixed timeout sometimes works but is unreliable: a sleep neither verifies font status nor adapts to fast or slow runs. Await the font API promise and assert the real content state.
networkidledoes not solve the issue: it is a network heuristic, not a font-specific success check. Playwright discourages usingnetworkidleas a test readiness condition; prefer assertions on the actual state required by the screenshot. See the Page API documentation.- Images still differ despite loaded fonts: compare browser, operating system, viewport, device scale, headless mode, animation state, and other dynamic elements with the baseline.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page through one GET request. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and whether the request was billed. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with tools including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These are ScreenshotNeo’s stated plan terms; see ScreenshotNeo.

The one-call capture avoids setting up browser automation; it does not replace Playwright’s targeted font assertions when your test must prove a particular face loaded. Frequently Asked Questions
Does document.fonts.ready guarantee that a specific web font loaded?
No. It indicates that required font loading and related layout have settled; inspect the intended face’s status to distinguish successful loading from fallback rendering.
