You can loop rain video and audio with FFmpeg on a Windows PC and send it to YouTube Live, but the command alone does not make a stream reliable around the clock. You also need an eligible, verified channel, a private stream key, a tested encoder setup, and a plan to monitor Windows, your internet connection, and YouTube ingest.

Before you start

Confirm that your channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live streaming tips for current eligibility guidance.

  • A Windows computer that can remain on and run FFmpeg while streaming.
  • A stable upload connection with enough capacity for your chosen video bitrate, plus headroom for normal network variation.
  • Rain audio and visuals that you recorded or are licensed to stream on YouTube. Check that the license also covers any intended monetization and archived replay.
  • FFmpeg installed on Windows. The available encoders depend on your FFmpeg build and hardware.

YouTube’s encoder guide recommends setting up ahead of time, checking the Live Control Room preview, testing the stream, and monitoring audio and video quality. A rain scene still needs a meaningful test: make sure sound is present, the image behaves as intended, ingest health is good, and the watch page plays correctly.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then locate its server URL and stream key. YouTube explains encoder setup in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Keep the stream key private. It authorizes an encoder to send content to your stream, so do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, tutorial, or source repository.
  3. Use the URL and key shown in Studio in your FFmpeg output configuration. If a key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder; see Manage live stream settings.

Choose the video and audio settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection between the encoder and its servers. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the endpoint you choose.

Set resolution and bitrate to match the image and a stable upload connection. YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. A low-motion rain scene may look acceptable at a lower rate, but that depends on the source and encode; test rather than assuming. For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced settings guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its keyframe guidance recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Current recommendations are in YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Decide how to feed FFmpeg

  • One file with audio and video: simpler stream mapping if the rain sound is already part of the video.
  • Separate audio and video: lets you loop each input independently, but requires explicit mapping and testing at loop boundaries.
  • Software or hardware encoding: software encoding such as libx264 uses the CPU; a supported hardware encoder may reduce CPU load. Availability, quality, and stability depend on the actual PC and FFmpeg build.

Loop separate rain video and audio with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 loops an input indefinitely. The -re input option reads at native rate, which is useful when the timing of packets matters for live output. These are input options, so place them before the corresponding -i. The following Windows command is a starting shape, not a validated recipe: adapt it to your files, encoder, bitrate, and YouTube endpoint, then test it.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "rain-video.mp4" -re -stream_loop -1 -i "rain-audio.wav" -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmp://SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY"

Replace the two filenames with your actual media paths and replace the example output URL with the current server URL and key shown in YouTube Studio. Do not publish a command containing your real key. The example uses H.264 software encoding, 30 fps, and a 60-frame GOP; at 30 fps, that GOP is two seconds. Its 4500 kbps video rate is only an example and is not YouTube’s recommended 1080p30 rate. Choose a rate appropriate to your output and upload line. Consider RTMPS if your FFmpeg build and endpoint configuration support it.

For a single file containing both sound and video, loop that input and map both streams from it instead of mapping video from input 0 and audio from input 1. Check the FFmpeg documentation for option behavior and the encoder options available in your build. Media formats can have duration or timestamp quirks; test loop transitions and audio continuity on an unlisted stream before relying on the setup.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start with an unlisted test stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Watch its preview and the watch page, not just FFmpeg’s console output.
  2. Check that video and audio are both present, the rain plays smoothly across loop points, and YouTube reports healthy ingest.
  3. Once the test is satisfactory, set the intended audience and visibility in Studio, then start the public or scheduled broadcast as appropriate.
  4. Keep the Live Control Room available for monitoring. Watch for ingest warnings, missing audio, frozen video, and any loss of connection.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That documented automatic-archive condition is not a guarantee for a single 24-hour broadcast. If a complete replay matters, plan around sessions shorter than 12 hours and check current Studio behavior before relying on archives for longer streams.

What it takes to keep the stream running 24/7

With FFmpeg, your Windows PC is the streaming host. -stream_loop -1 repeats media only while FFmpeg remains alive; it does not restart a crashed process, restore internet access, prevent Windows sleep or updates, or confirm that YouTube is receiving the stream.

  • Configure Windows power settings so the PC does not sleep during the broadcast.
  • Use a reliable network connection; wired networking can avoid some wireless interruptions.
  • Plan for updates, power loss, and internet outages, and consider a process supervisor or scheduled restart approach only after testing it on your Windows setup.
  • Monitor YouTube’s Live Control Room and have a way to notice and respond if the encoder or ingest stops.
  • Keep the stream key private and rotate it if compromised.

Windows service wrappers and watchdog configurations vary, and there is no single recovery command established here as reliable for every PC. Test any restart arrangement, including how it handles YouTube reconnects, before depending on it.

A license should expressly cover YouTube live streaming and, if relevant, monetization, territories, duration, and replay or archive use. YouTube’s encoder guide says channels in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a livestream. That does not establish that a particular channel or rain stream qualifies for ads; eligibility depends on the channel’s status and YouTube’s policies.

If you do not want a Windows PC and home connection to host the stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded media from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

Yes. FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely while FFmpeg is running.

Will one 24-hour YouTube stream be archived in full?

YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not guarantee a complete archive for a longer broadcast.
