A YouTube playlist is a set of separately uploaded videos; you do not need to join the files into one video.
Choose what “consistent format” means
For most collections, consistency means that every file uses a container YouTube accepts and a video and audio codec suitable for upload. A practical target is MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, 4:2:0 chroma, and 48 kHz audio. YouTube also lists other accepted audio codecs, so AAC-LC is a convenient common target, not the only supported choice. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Unless your project requires a shared size or frame rate, preserve each source’s frame rate, aspect ratio, and resolution. YouTube recommends encoding at the frame rate at which the content was recorded, and its player adapts to different aspect ratios. Don’t stretch footage or add baked-in padding merely to make every file’s dimensions identical.
Inspect files before converting
Check representative inputs before building a batch command. Files can differ in video and audio codecs, stream count, resolution, frame rate, rotation, pixel format, color metadata, and audio layout. If a file has multiple tracks, decide which video and audio streams you want; FFmpeg selects streams automatically by default, while -map lets you specify them. Avoid copying subtitle, data, or attachment streams into MP4 without checking compatibility.

FFmpeg’s documentation explains stream selection and command-line option placement. Options are order-sensitive: many apply to the input or output that follows them. Inspect a sample output’s playback and metadata before processing the whole collection.
Convert each file to the shared target
When streamcopy is enough
If the source video and audio streams are already suitable and compatible with MP4, you can remux them without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4This changes the container, not the encoded streams, so it is fast and avoids another encoding pass. It is only a pattern: it can fail if a stream is incompatible with MP4, and it cannot apply filters or normalize codecs. If the input contains multiple streams, map only those you intend to keep, for example:
ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy output.mp4That mapping selects the first video and first audio stream. Change it if the desired tracks are elsewhere or the file has no audio.

When you need to re-encode
Re-encode when you need to normalize a codec, alter dimensions or frame rate, change color properties, or apply a filter. A straightforward H.264/AAC MP4 conversion that retains the source dimensions and frame rate is:
ffmpeg -i input.mov -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac -ar 48000 output.mp4This command targets the first video and audio streams, encodes video with H.264, requests 4:2:0 pixel format, and encodes audio as AAC at 48 kHz. It does not force a new frame rate or aspect ratio. If a source lacks audio, remove the audio mapping and audio options. Check that your FFmpeg build includes the requested encoder.

Encoding quality and file size depend on the encoder and settings; no single preset is lossless or best for every source. YouTube’s bitrate table gives reference recommendations, not universal requirements or a mandatory cap. For example, it recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR at 24, 25, or 30 fps; 12 Mbps for 1080p SDR at 48, 50, or 60 fps; and 35–45 Mbps for 2160p/4K SDR at 24, 25, or 30 fps. Its stereo audio reference is 384 kbps. Match the relevant resolution, frame-rate, and SDR/HDR category in YouTube’s current settings table.
Only normalize dimensions when the project requires it
If a delivery specification requires a common canvas, choose deliberately whether to scale and pad or scale and crop. Padding preserves the whole image but adds bars; cropping fills the canvas but removes part of the image. Don’t stretch the picture to force matching dimensions. Since YouTube adapts to aspect ratio, a shared canvas is a production choice, not a playlist requirement. Avoid baked-in letterboxing or pillarboxing unless the creative brief calls for it.

Batch conversion safely
After validating one output, you can apply the same policy to files in a directory. A simple Bash loop for common video extensions is:

doneThis example is for a Bash-compatible shell and assumes every matched file has both a first video stream and a first audio stream. Review files with different track layouts, missing audio, rotation, or unusual color settings individually. If outputs already exist, choose a safe naming or overwrite policy before running the batch.
If you mean one joined video instead
Joining clips into a single output is a different task from preparing separate playlist uploads. FFmpeg offers two routes, depending on whether the clips meet compatible format conditions:
- Concat demuxer: can join compatible files without re-encoding. It requires the inputs to meet its format conditions; see the FFmpeg concat FAQ.
- Concat filter: use this re-encoding path when the clips need processing to form one output. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends it when re-encoding is needed.
Do not use either joining workflow merely because the videos belong in the same YouTube playlist.
Common problems and fixes
- “Could not find tag for codec” or output muxing fails: the copied stream may not be compatible with MP4. Re-encode to a suitable codec or choose a compatible output container.
- Batch command fails on one file: inspect its streams and metadata; it may lack audio, use a different stream order, or contain tracks the command did not account for. Adjust mapping for that file.
- Unexpected bars or a distorted image: check source aspect ratio and any scale, crop, pad, or stretch operation. Preserve aspect ratio unless you intentionally need a new canvas.
- Motion looks different after conversion: ensure you did not unintentionally change the frame rate. YouTube recommends matching the recorded rate.
- Output is larger, smaller, or softer than expected: streamcopy preserves encoded streams, while re-encoding creates new ones whose size and quality depend on encoder settings. Review a sample and adjust settings for the source and intended use.
- Audio is missing: confirm the input has an audio stream and that your mapping selects it. Remove audio options if the source is intentionally silent.
Upload and playlist checks
- Play each converted file and inspect its metadata before uploading a full batch.
- Keep separate videos as separate uploads if you want viewers to navigate them individually in a YouTube playlist.
- Use content you have rights to upload and stream. Conversion does not grant copyright permission; review YouTube’s upload guidance and applicable copyright rules.
- Formatting alone does not establish eligibility for monetization or resolve reused-content questions. Make sure your uploads comply with YouTube’s applicable policies.
