For local website screenshots paired with structured page inspection, Playwright MCP is the clearest documented choice. It can capture a viewport, a selected element, or a full page, and its accessibility snapshots help an agent understand and interact with page structure. For a hosted browser, Browserbase MCP is the documented alternative. If you want an API and an MCP server built specifically for screenshot capture, ScreenshotNeo is another option to try first: it removes common consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bills only clean shots.
These options serve different workflows; the available documentation does not establish a measured performance ranking. Choose based on where the browser should run, the kind of capture you need, and how the agent will inspect the page.
Best MCP servers for website screenshots and page capture
| Option | Where it runs and control style | Best fit | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Screenshot API and MCP server with tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. | Developers and AI agents that want screenshot-focused capture, with consent-banner and widget cleanup before the shot. | Its MCP server is a screenshot-oriented alternative; the documentation summarized here does not establish a head-to-head comparison with browser-automation MCP servers. ScreenshotNeo |
| Playwright MCP | Local browser automation with structured accessibility snapshots, selectors, and a screenshot tool. | Local, repeatable workflows that combine visual captures with page inspection and interaction. | Documentation describes capabilities, not comparative benchmark results. Check current setup instructions and select the capabilities your workflow needs. |
| Browserbase MCP | Hosted cloud browser; Browserbase documents Stagehand-powered browsing and interaction. | Remote capture and interaction where the browser should run in Browserbase infrastructure. | Requires a Browserbase API key. Confirm current service terms separately. |
| Chrome DevTools MCP | Listed by Browserbase as local, lower-level Chrome DevTools Protocol control. | Tasks requiring direct Chrome debugging control. | This characterization comes from Browserbase’s own 2026 comparison, not an independent evaluation. |
| Puppeteer MCP | Listed by Browserbase as local and script-oriented. | Chromium automation for developers already working with Puppeteer. | Browserbase’s comparison does not establish comparative reliability or performance. |
Playwright is the strongest directly documented local choice in this group for screenshot capture paired with structured inspection. Browserbase is the documented hosted path. The other two appear here as narrower options based on Browserbase’s vendor-authored comparison, not as independently ranked alternatives.
How to choose the right server
Decide where the browser should run
- Local: Choose a local browser workflow when you need the browser to run in your own environment and want repeatable automation close to your development setup. Playwright MCP is the most directly documented fit here.
- Hosted: Choose a cloud browser when capture should run remotely rather than on the machine using the MCP client. Browserbase documents hosted browser sessions and requires an API key.
- Screenshot-focused API or MCP: Consider ScreenshotNeo when the task is primarily to produce screenshots or PDFs rather than build a general browser-automation workflow.
Match the capture scope to the job
- Viewport: Captures what is visible in the browser viewport; useful for a quick visual check.
- Element: Captures a particular element or selector when the relevant evidence is a component, card, chart, or other bounded region.
- Full page: Captures the scrollable page for documentation or broader visual review. In Playwright MCP, full-page capture cannot be combined with a target element.
Choose how the agent will understand the page
A screenshot gives visual evidence. Playwright’s accessibility snapshots provide structured page information and references for interacting with elements. They are complementary: use the screenshot to inspect appearance and the snapshot to locate and act on page structure. For tasks that require direct, lower-level Chrome control, Browserbase’s comparison positions Chrome DevTools MCP as an option; that is vendor guidance, not a neutral performance finding.

What Playwright MCP can capture
Playwright’s browser_take_screenshot tool supports a screenshot of the viewport, a target element or selector, and full-page capture. You can select PNG, JPEG, or WebP output, choose CSS-pixel or device-pixel scaling, and provide a filename. If you omit the filename, the image may be returned inline in the tool response.

Playwright MCP is broader than a screenshot utility: its official overview describes navigation, page interaction, screenshot capture, console and network tools, and support for multiple browser engines, including Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Edge. Browser and tool details can change, so check the project’s current documentation before configuring a workflow.
Capabilities are configurable
The Playwright capabilities guide describes screenshots as part of the core tools. Coordinate-based screenshot workflows are associated with the optional vision capability, and PDF export is also optional. Do not assume that every advanced capability is enabled in a default configuration; select and verify the capabilities your agent needs.
When Browserbase MCP is a better fit
Browserbase documents an MCP server that uses its hosted headless browsers with Stagehand for browsing, interaction, extraction, and screenshots. It is the clearest fit in this comparison when the browser should run in Browserbase’s infrastructure rather than locally. Its documentation says an API key is required. The available information does not establish a price comparison or a performance advantage over local options.

When the other listed MCP options fit
Chrome DevTools MCP
Browserbase’s 2026 browser-automation comparison lists Chrome DevTools MCP as a local choice for lower-level Chrome DevTools Protocol control. That can suit debugging-oriented tasks where direct Chrome control matters more than a screenshot-first interface. Treat this as Browserbase’s recommendation, not an independent ranking.
Puppeteer MCP
The same Browserbase comparison lists Puppeteer MCP as a local, script-oriented option for straightforward Chromium automation. It may be a natural fit if your existing workflow is already built around Puppeteer. The cited comparison does not establish that it is more reliable or faster than the other options.
ScreenshotNeo as a screenshot-first alternative
If the goal is a clean image or PDF rather than general browser control, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its MCP tools are take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. Before a capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
The API is a simple GET request. The following cURL example saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the target URL with the page you need and use your own API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available request options.

Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
No independent head-to-head measurements are available here for speed, accuracy, or reliability, so choose based on the workflow rather than an assumed performance winner. Local and hosted describe where execution takes place, not guaranteed results. For recurring jobs, verify current project setup, capabilities, service terms, authentication requirements, and how your workflow handles failed navigation or unavailable pages before relying on unattended captures.

The full page and target element options conflict
In Playwright MCP, full-page capture cannot be combined with a target element. Choose one scope per capture: remove the target for the full page, or turn off full-page mode to capture the element.
The screenshot is not appearing as a file
Playwright may return the image inline when no filename is supplied. Provide a filename when your workflow expects a saved output, or handle the inline image in the MCP client’s response.

A hosted Browserbase session cannot start
Browserbase’s documentation requires an API key. Confirm that the MCP server is configured with a valid key and consult its current setup documentation for any changed authentication steps.
Practical recommendation
Start with Playwright MCP when you want local capture plus structured page inspection. Choose Browserbase MCP when a hosted browser is the requirement. Consider Chrome DevTools MCP for lower-level Chrome debugging or Puppeteer MCP for an existing Puppeteer-oriented workflow, bearing in mind those characterizations come from Browserbase’s comparison. For screenshot-first API or agent capture with consent and widget cleanup, try ScreenshotNeo as the alternative.
Frequently Asked Questions
