Use the agent’s browser integration to find the rendered table in the page’s DOM, wait until its data is ready, then take an element screenshot. Use a viewport or full-page screenshot instead when the image needs surrounding context or content below the fold. DOM structure helps the agent target the table; the screenshot shows how it looks.

Playwright MCP documents viewport, full-page, and element screenshots as distinct choices; its guidance does not combine full-page capture with an element target (Playwright MCP screenshots). If the task is an ordinary web page and DOM access is available, start with browser automation rather than relying on vision alone.
Find and capture the table with Playwright
In JavaScript, use a semantic locator where possible. The following assumes an already-open Playwright Page, a table whose accessible name is “Quarterly results,” and an output directory that exists:

Adapt the locator to the page
- If the page has several tables, narrow the match with a meaningful accessible name, a relevant section, or a stable test ID.
- If there is no accessible name, inspect the page’s accessibility or DOM snapshot and choose a stable selector for the actual markup. Some visually tabular layouts are not native HTML tables.
- Avoid long CSS or XPath chains that depend on incidental page nesting when a semantic locator or stable test contract is available.
Playwright locators resolve against the current page state when used, which can help with changing pages, but it does not establish that a selector uniquely identifies the intended business object. Check the match before capture. See Playwright’s locator guidance.
Wait for the data, not just navigation
A visible table can still be loading or empty. Use a readiness condition tied to the page, such as an expected row appearing or a loading indicator disappearing. There is no universal wait condition for dynamic tables; choose one that reflects the site’s own rendered data state. Playwright’s page API provides the underlying page methods, but the correct condition depends on the site (Playwright Page API).

Choose screenshot scope
For just the table, call table.screenshot(). For the current viewport, use a page screenshot; for below-the-fold content, use a full-page page screenshot. Those choices frame different content: full-page capture is not a way to combine an element crop with the rest of the page.
Use visual and structural checks for different jobs
A screenshot is useful for checking rendered appearance—cropping, styling, visible labels, and layout. It does not prove that every cell contains correct data. For text or data assertions, inspect the DOM or validate against the application’s data separately. Playwright distinguishes locating and interacting with page structure from taking screenshots (Playwright MCP; Playwright locators).

Likewise, an accessibility or browser snapshot can help the agent locate a table, while a screenshot lets it inspect the visual result. OpenAI’s computer-use documentation notes that screenshots are excluded from API output by default; an application that needs to display them must enable screenshot inclusion with include_screenshots (OpenAI computer use).
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- No table matched: Check whether the page uses native table markup, whether the accessible name differs, or whether the table is inside a relevant section. Inspect the actual page snapshot and revise the locator.
- The wrong table was captured: Narrow a multi-match locator using its name, surrounding section, or a stable page-specific selector, then verify the target before taking the screenshot.
- The table is blank or incomplete: The page may not have finished loading its data. Wait for a site-specific signal such as expected rows or the disappearance of a loading indicator rather than treating navigation completion as readiness.
- Rows are cut off: An element screenshot frames the element; if the table itself has constrained or scrollable dimensions, inspect its layout and choose the framing that matches the intended image. A full-page screenshot captures page content below the viewport, but it is a separate mode from element targeting.
- The image looks right but the values may be wrong: Use DOM or application-level checks for data correctness; visual capture alone verifies appearance, not underlying values.
- The agent cannot inspect the DOM: For desktop UI or a browser environment without usable DOM parsing, use screenshot-driven computer interaction. Microsoft describes it as an iterative loop of screenshot, action, and updated screenshot (Microsoft Learn).
