To take website screenshots in Claude Desktop, configure Microsoft Playwright MCP as a local server. Install Node.js 20 or newer, add the Playwright server entry to Claude Desktop’s MCP configuration, then restart Desktop and use its browser_take_screenshot tool. Playwright downloads its browser on first use.
What you need
- Claude Desktop with access to its local MCP server configuration.
- Node.js 20 or newer, as required by the current Playwright MCP installation guide: Playwright MCP installation.
- Permission to edit the Claude Desktop configuration file and any paths used by the server.
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, lets an AI application connect to external tools. For this setup, Claude Desktop connects to Playwright MCP, which provides browser automation and screenshot tools. See the Microsoft Playwright MCP README.
Configure Playwright MCP as a local server
- Install Node.js 20 or newer if it is not already installed.
- Open Claude Desktop’s local MCP configuration using the instructions in the Claude Desktop local MCP setup guide.
- Add the Playwright entry under the existing
mcpServersobject. Preserve other server entries already in the file.

- Save the file. Restart or reconnect Claude Desktop if the server does not appear immediately.
- In Claude Desktop, look for the server and its tools in the chat’s Connectors menu or in Developer settings.
The browser downloads automatically on first use according to the Playwright installation guide, so the first browser action may take longer than later ones.

Take a screenshot in Claude Desktop
Once Playwright MCP is available, ask Claude to navigate to a page and capture it. For example:
Navigate to https://example.com, then take a full-page screenshot and save it as homepage.png.The documented tool is browser_take_screenshot. A full-page capture uses fullPage: true; the tool can save the image to a filename or return it inline when no filename is specified. See Playwright screenshot tool documentation.

Use the screenshot primarily to view the page. For finding and operating page elements, Playwright MCP supports structured accessibility snapshots and page tools, rather than requiring you to target controls by looking at the image. The Playwright MCP README describes this interaction model.
Choose local configuration or a desktop extension
Claude documents two setup routes: install a desktop extension from Settings > Extensions, or configure a local MCP server directly. Extensions provide guided installation and extension settings; direct configuration lets you supply a server-specific mcpServers entry. Troubleshoot a missing or failing server
- Playwright does not appear in Claude: Check the chat’s Connectors menu and Desktop Developer settings. Save the configuration and restart or reconnect Desktop.
- The server fails to start: Inspect the server logs. Check that the configuration is valid JSON, that the entry is nested under
mcpServers, and that the command and arguments match the example. - Claude cannot access a required path: Check the configuration values and path permissions. Anthropic’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends reviewing required settings and path permissions for extension configuration problems.
- The first screenshot is slow or the browser is unavailable: Playwright downloads the browser on first use. Confirm Node.js meets the documented version requirement and allow that initial setup to complete.
- You expected the image in the chat but got a file: Specify a filename to save the screenshot; omit it when you want the tool to return the image inline, as described in the screenshot documentation.
