Build a recurring screenshot job from two parts: use a browser automation script to open the page and save an image, then use a scheduler to run that script. Add an AI computer-use agent only where the page needs variable navigation or interaction; keep timing, capture settings, file naming, storage, and run checks deterministic.
What the scheduled screenshot workflow does
A screenshot schedule is not one feature of an AI agent. The browser performs the capture, while a scheduler starts the capture task at the chosen cadence. Playwright can capture the visible viewport, a full page, or a selected element, and GitHub Actions can invoke a workflow on a cron schedule. An agent is useful when a task needs to interpret the page or perform UI actions that are awkward to encode with fixed selectors. For a stable page and repeatable flow, ordinary browser automation is generally easier to verify and reproduce. Keep the agent’s scope narrow, and check the resulting image rather than assuming an interaction succeeded.
Choose what the screenshot should contain
- Viewport: captures the browser’s visible area. Choose it to monitor a known screen region at fixed dimensions.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page. It can include content below the initial view and produce a large image.
- Element: captures one component, such as a dashboard panel, selected by a locator or CSS selector.
For comparisons across runs, keep the capture scope, viewport, browser version, and scale consistent. Otherwise, a setup change can appear to be a website change. Playwright also lets you choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP, a filename, and CSS-pixel or device-pixel scale; see its screenshot options.

Build a repeatable capture task with Playwright
The following Node.js example takes a full-page PNG after a site-specific heading is visible. Replace the URL and heading locator with the target page’s actual values. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the project before running the script.

}Create the screenshots directory before the first run, or update the script to create it. If the page has no stable heading, wait for a selector that represents the state you actually need to capture. A fixed delay can be useful for a known animation, but it is a weak substitute for a meaningful readiness condition: a delay that is too short captures an incomplete page, while an unnecessarily long one wastes runner time.
Use a viewport or element capture instead
For a viewport screenshot, omit fullPage or set it to false. To capture an element, use Playwright’s locator screenshot method after waiting for that element:

Add AI interaction only where it helps
If the target requires navigating a changing interface, an AI computer-use agent can interact with the site through a browser interface. OpenAI’s documented computer-use flow includes creating a browser session, following session events, handling access requests, waiting for the agent’s turn to finish, reviewing saved browser activity, and deleting the session. Consult the OpenAI computer-use guide for the current API and session details.
Keep the agent’s task specific—for example, navigate to a named report and open a particular date range—then have the capture step wait for a selector or other page-specific condition. Record whether the session completed and verify that the saved image shows the intended state. The documented capabilities do not guarantee that an agent will choose the right page or produce a visually correct capture on every run.

A hosted alternative to managing the browser runtime is Google Cloud’s isolated computer-use browser sandbox, which can be controlled by API requests or browser control through CDP and used with automation tools such as Playwright. Its documentation describes actions such as navigating, clicking, and typing; check Google Cloud’s computer-use documentation for availability and commercial terms.
Schedule the script with GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions runs scheduled workflows from the latest commit on the repository’s default branch. Schedules use UTC by default, with optional IANA time-zone configuration in current documentation. The documented minimum interval is once every five minutes; check GitHub’s current service rules before depending on a particular interval. The example below runs daily at 17 minutes past 09:00 UTC, avoiding the start of the hour.

The artifact upload preserves the output as a workflow artifact; it is not permanent archival storage. For durable retention, upload images to a storage destination whose retention, access controls, and costs suit your needs. Include a timestamp or run identifier in each filename so one run does not overwrite another.

GitHub warns that high load can delay scheduled events, especially near the beginning of an hour, and that queued jobs may be dropped. Scheduling at a nonzero minute reduces the chance of delay but does not make Actions a precise real-time scheduler. If an image must arrive by a strict deadline, monitor execution and consider a scheduler with guarantees that fit the deadline. See GitHub’s scheduling guidance.
Scheduled workflows also have repository-specific failure cases: GitHub says schedules in public repositories are disabled by default in public forks, and schedules in public repositories with no activity for 60 days may be disabled. Check the workflow status and repository activity when a run disappears; see the scheduled event documentation.

- Retain run history and alert when a capture job fails or an expected image is missing.
- Use a site-specific readiness condition, not an arbitrary universal wait.
- Keep browser, viewport, scale, and screenshot scope unchanged when comparing images.
- Store output somewhere with an explicit retention and access policy.
- Review the saved image or a suitable automated check when the agent performs navigation or UI actions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can GitHub Actions run a scheduled screenshot in a time zone other than UTC?
Current GitHub documentation permits an IANA time zone for scheduled workflows; consult its schedule syntax and set the intended zone explicitly.
Can an AI agent guarantee that the screenshot shows the correct page?
No. The documented computer-use capabilities describe interaction and session handling, not a guarantee of correct navigation or visual accuracy. Verify the resulting capture.
Why did a public repository stop taking scheduled screenshots?
GitHub says schedules may be disabled by default in public forks and may be disabled in public repositories with no activity for 60 days. Check workflow status and repository activity.
