To capture a website at a chosen browser viewport with Playwright MCP, start its server with --viewport-size=1280x720 (or your preferred WIDTHxHEIGHT), navigate to the page, then call browser_take_screenshot. The viewport controls the visible browser area, not the full-page image height; use the screenshot tool’s fullPage option when you need content below the fold.
Set the custom viewport size
Playwright MCP’s --viewport-size option accepts dimensions in WIDTHxHEIGHT form. For example, --viewport-size=1280x720 configures a viewport 1,280 CSS pixels wide and 720 CSS pixels high. Replace those numbers with the dimensions you need.
You can set the same value with the PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_VIEWPORT_SIZE environment variable. When a value is set in more than one place, the precedence is config file, then environment variable, then command-line argument; the command-line argument wins. See the Playwright MCP configuration options.
Client-launched server
Configure your MCP client to launch @playwright/mcp and pass the viewport option among the server arguments. The exact configuration-file format depends on the MCP client, so use its documented server configuration format. The value to pass is:

Standalone server over HTTP
If your MCP client connects to a separately running server, start Playwright MCP with HTTP transport and the viewport option, then configure the client to connect to that server’s MCP endpoint. The official Playwright MCP getting-started guide covers both client-launched configuration and standalone HTTP transport; choose the arrangement your client supports.
Viewport is not full-page height
A 1280×720 viewport means the browser’s visible page area is that size. It does not set the height of a full-page screenshot. For a long page, use full-page capture separately.
Navigate and capture the page
- Connect your MCP client to the configured Playwright MCP server.
- Navigate to the page you want to inspect using the browser navigation tool available in your MCP client.
- Call
browser_take_screenshotto capture the current page. With no full-page or element-target option, it captures the current viewport.
For example, the screenshot documentation describes these tasks: “Take a screenshot of the current page,” “Take a full-page screenshot including content below the fold,” and “Take a screenshot of just the login form.” The choice between viewport, full-page, and element capture determines what is included in the image.

Capture scope

Image format
PNG, JPEG, and WebP are supported. Playwright MCP infers the format from the output filename extension. If neither the explicit type nor the filename extension determines a format, it uses PNG. Choose PNG when you need a lossless image; JPEG or WebP may be suitable when a smaller image is more important, depending on the content and your downstream use.
Pixel scale
Use scale: "css" for an image sized in CSS pixels; this is the default. Use scale: "device" to output pixels at the device-pixel ratio. CSS scale is convenient when comparing to CSS layout dimensions, while device scale preserves the higher-resolution pixel dimensions when the browser is using a device-pixel ratio above 1. These settings affect output pixel sizing, not the viewport dimensions.

Use screenshots for visual checks, not page structure
A screenshot is useful for reviewing layout, visual regressions, and documenting a bug. It is a raster image, so it is less useful than structured page information for reading text or discovering interactive elements. For page structure and text, use the accessibility snapshot; use its element references to identify targets for interaction. Playwright MCP documents this distinction in its screenshot guidance.

Playwright MCP runs headed by default. Add --headless when you want to run without a visible browser window. The documented browser choices include Chrome (the default), Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge; see the configuration options.

A custom viewport alone is not complete device emulation. Playwright MCP also documents device emulation options, but setting a width and height should not be treated as automatically matching a particular phone or tablet’s other device characteristics.
Troubleshooting
- The screenshot has the wrong dimensions: Check the effective viewport value and whether a higher-precedence setting overrides it. A command-line argument overrides the environment variable, which overrides the config-file value.
- The image stops at the bottom of the viewport: That is the default viewport capture. Set
fullPage: truefor the page below the fold. - You need only one component: Pass
targetwith an element reference or unique selector. Do not also setfullPage: true. - The output is PNG instead of JPEG or WebP: Make the intended format clear with the supported format setting or the filename extension; PNG is the fallback if neither determines the format.
- The screenshot’s pixel dimensions differ from the CSS dimensions: Check the scale setting.
"css"uses CSS-pixel sizing;"device"uses device-pixel-ratio sizing. - The browser window does not appear: Playwright MCP is headed by default, but the
--headlessoption disables headed mode. Check whether it is present in the effective server arguments.
Security note for optional code execution
If you enable the optional ability to run Playwright code through the server, the Playwright MCP getting-started documentation warns: “This tool runs arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent — only enable for trusted MCP clients.” Treat access to that capability as execution of code in the server process, and enable it only for clients you trust.
