To capture a website with an AI agent and hide popups, first inspect the page with an accessibility snapshot, then dismiss an appropriate page overlay or hide it only in the screenshot. Refresh the snapshot after changing the page, choose viewport, element, or full-page capture, and inspect the saved image. A cookie banner or signup modal is page content; a JavaScript alert or a popup tab needs separate handling.
Use the agent to inspect, handle, and capture the page
- Open the intended URL in the agent-controlled browser. Wait for the content and overlays relevant to your capture to finish rendering; navigation completing does not guarantee the page is visually ready.
- Read a fresh accessibility snapshot. Use it to locate controls such as a consent choice or close button. A screenshot shows appearance; it is not the best way to identify controls to interact with. Playwright MCP explicitly advises: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use
browser_snapshotto get refs to interact with.” Playwright MCP Screenshots. - Decide whether the page should change. If the overlay is obstructing the intended task and there is an appropriate visible control, use it. Choose a consent option only when it reflects the intended choice; hiding a banner in an image is not consent. If you only need a clean visual and want the live page state unchanged, use a screenshot mask or capture-time style instead.
- Refresh the snapshot after interaction. Dismissing a banner or modal can change the page and invalidate old element references. Vercel’s agent-browser guide recommends taking a fresh snapshot after handling a covering consent banner or modal before retrying a blocked click. Vercel Labs agent-browser.
- Choose capture scope—the current viewport, a target element, or the whole scrollable page—then save the result with a descriptive filename and inspect it.
Use the accessibility snapshot to find and operate page controls, then use the screenshot to verify the visual result. A page snapshot describes structure; an image is useful for checking layout, charts, and visual appearance.
Choose the right way to hide a popup
| What you see | Best approach | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Cookie or consent banner, signup overlay, or ordinary site modal | Use an appropriate page control if the page should change. For a visual-only cleanup, mask the element or apply capture-time CSS. | Interaction changes page state. A mask covers the element’s bounding box in the image but does not dismiss it. CSS can hide it in the capture without removing it from the live page. |
JavaScript alert, confirm, prompt, or beforeunload dialog |
Handle it as a browser dialog, not as an ordinary page element. | Playwright automatically dismisses these dialogs when there is no dialog listener. If you register a listener, it must accept or dismiss the dialog or page actions can stall. |
| A new popup tab or window | Listen for the page’s popup event and handle that separate page if it is where the intended content appears. | The popup is a separate browser page, not an overlay to mask on the original page. |
Playwright’s Page API describes unexpected signup overlays as a case where a locator handler can help when a dialog blocks an intended action. Its screenshot API also supports masks and capture-time styles. A mask can leave a conspicuous colored rectangle; CSS rules that are too broad can hide page content you meant to retain. Playwright Page API.
Choose viewport, element, or full-page capture
- Viewport: captures what is visible in the browser window now; use it for a quick view of the current screen.
- Element: captures a specific chart, card, form, or other component. It is useful when the surrounding page is irrelevant.
- Full page: captures the scrollable document rather than just the visible window. In the documented Playwright MCP screenshot tool,
fullPagecannot be combined with a target element. Playwright MCP Screenshots. - Masked or styled: keeps the overlay in page state but obscures or hides it only in the output image. Check the captured result for leftover mask color or content accidentally hidden by your CSS.
Handle browser dialogs and popup tabs separately
JavaScript dialogs
Dialogs such as alert, confirm, prompt, and beforeunload are browser dialogs, not DOM elements. Playwright’s dialog guidance says that without a dialog listener, these dialogs are automatically dismissed. Once a listener is registered, the listener must accept or dismiss the dialog; otherwise, page actions can stall. Consult Playwright Dialogs when your agent or test explicitly registers dialog handling.

A page can open a popup tab or window. Playwright exposes a popup event for this case. Treat the new page separately and capture it if the intended content opened there; masking the original page will not move the capture to the popup. The event is documented in the Playwright Page API.

When capture results are wrong
- A click is blocked: a consent banner or modal may cover the target. Locate the obstruction in a fresh snapshot, handle it through an appropriate control, refresh the snapshot, and retry with current references.
- The screenshot still shows the overlay: confirm that you acted on the overlay or applied a mask/style to the correct element, then inspect the resulting image. A screenshot is a visual capture, not a record that the live element was dismissed.
- The image contains a colored block: that is consistent with masking an element’s bounding box. Use a suitable capture-time style if the desired result is to hide the element rather than cover it with a colored mask.
- Page content disappeared too: narrow the CSS rule. A broad selector can hide intended content along with the overlay.
- Page actions stall after a dialog appears: if a dialog listener is registered, ensure its handler accepts or dismisses the dialog.
- The capture shows the wrong page: check whether the site opened a separate popup tab or window, and handle the popup page as a separate target.
- Lower-page content is missing: use full-page rather than viewport capture, and confirm that you have not combined full-page capture with a target element in the documented MCP tool.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return an image or PDF. Its capture workflow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Does hiding a cookie banner in a screenshot count as accepting cookies?
No. A screenshot mask or capture-time style affects the image, not the site’s consent state.
