Test a news site at phone-sized viewports, capture both the first screen and the full page, and compare screenshots under consistent browser conditions. Start with its homepage and an article page, then add pages that exercise distinctive layouts such as long headlines, large lead images, ads, or related-story modules. Chrome DevTools is useful for manual checks; Playwright can make recurring screenshot comparisons repeatable. Neither mobile emulation nor screenshots alone proves how the site behaves on every physical phone or whether it is accessible.
Choose pages that exercise the site’s layouts
Begin with at least two URLs: the news homepage and an article page. If the publication uses materially different templates or modules, add representative examples that reveal them:
- An article with a long headline, to check wrapping and the space it takes above the story.
- A page with a large lead image, to check its crop and how it fits the screen.
- A page with prominent advertising, related stories, or subscription modules, to see whether these displace or interrupt the reading flow.
This is a practical test selection, not a prescribed industry standard. Choose URLs that exercise the actual templates you need to support.
Test narrow widths and the site’s breakpoints
In Chrome, open DevTools and switch to Device Mode. Choose Responsive and enter a width and height, or select a documented width preset. Chrome lists Mobile S at 320 px, Mobile M at 375 px, and Mobile L at 425 px. These are DevTools presets, not evidence of Indian phone ownership or a recommended market-share sample. Do not stop at generic widths. Inspect the site’s CSS media-query breakpoints and test immediately below and above each important transition. A navigation bar or story grid may change between two nearby widths; testing on both sides helps reveal a layout that only breaks at the transition. Also check portrait and landscape if both orientations matter for your readers.
Chrome describes Device Mode as a “first-order approximation” of a mobile device. It is valuable for responsive layout checks, but it does not reproduce every physical-device behavior. If a result matters or appears device-specific, verify it on an actual mobile phone.

Capture the first screen and the whole page
For each selected page and viewport, capture two useful views:
- Initial viewport: inspect what appears before scrolling, including the masthead, navigation, lead headline, and image.
- Full page: inspect the complete story and the placement of later content, advertising, related-story links, and subscription modules.
Save the page URL, viewport dimensions, browser version, and relevant capture conditions alongside each image. Without those details, a later comparison can confuse a changed rendering environment with a real layout change.

Review the screenshot for news-reading problems
Inspect each image at its recorded viewport and note the URL and screenshot with every issue. Look for:
- Headlines clipped, overlapping other content, or wrapping into an unexpectedly large block.
- Text that is too small or content that creates horizontal overflow.
- Lead images with broken or misleading crops.
- Navigation that covers a headline or story content.
- Ad units that cover a story or push important content out of its expected place.
- Related-story or subscription modules that interrupt the reading order.
Record the viewport where the issue occurs and whether it appears on the initial screen, farther down the page, or both. That makes the screenshot useful as a reproducible bug report rather than just a visual impression.

Automate repeat checks with Playwright
For recurring checks, Playwright can emulate device parameters and compare a capture with a reference image using toHaveScreenshot(). Its emulation documentation covers device configurations; the visual comparisons guide explains screenshot assertions and baselines.
Keep the baseline and later captures in the same rendering environment. Playwright notes that operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other differences can affect image output. Review visual diffs before updating a baseline so you do not accept an actual regression as the new expected image.

Use DevTools when you need an ad hoc inspection without setting up a test suite. Use Playwright when the same pages and viewport configurations need to be checked repeatedly. Neither approach makes every rendering environment identical; keep test conditions controlled and interpret diffs accordingly.

A screenshot can reveal visible layout problems, but it cannot establish keyboard or screen-reader usability. Use accessibility inspections for markup, contrast, and reflow, then manually navigate the site with a keyboard and a screen reader. Chrome’s Accessibility features reference describes DevTools support. Treat an inspector as one input to an accessibility review, not a substitute for using the site.
Troubleshoot inconsistent or unhelpful captures
- A diff appears although the page looks unchanged: compare browser version, operating system, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Restore consistent rendering conditions before deciding whether the change is a regression.
- A layout issue appears only near a certain width: inspect the site’s own responsive breakpoints and test on both sides of the transition, rather than relying only on a preset width.
- The screenshot looks fine, but a phone behaves differently: emulation is an approximation. Check on an actual mobile device when the issue is important or appears device-specific.
- The screenshot gives no answer about keyboard or screen-reader access: that is a limitation of visual evidence. Perform separate keyboard, screen-reader, and accessibility inspections.
