Start by testing OBS at 1280×720, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a video bitrate your hotspot can sustain continuously. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 240p–720p at 30 fps is 4 Mbps, but that is an encoder recommendation—not evidence that a particular Indian 4G connection can hold it around the clock. Test with your actual scene and audio, monitor stream health, and lower the output if the connection struggles.

Recommended OBS settings to test first

Use these as a starting profile, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. YouTube’s published recommendations are not specific to India, a carrier, or an individual hotspot. Your sustained upload at the place where the computer runs is the deciding factor.

OBS setting Starting choice How to choose or verify it
Encoder H.264 Choose an H.264 encoder supported by your computer. YouTube publishes the bitrate recommendations below for H.264.
Rate control CBR Set constant bitrate in the selected encoder.
Output resolution and frame rate 1280×720 at 30 fps Test this first for a variable or limited mobile upload. If the connection cannot sustain the stream, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again.
Video bitrate Begin by testing 4,000 kbps for 720p30 YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for H.264 at 240p–720p and 30 fps. Match the setting to sustained upload capacity, rather than a short-lived speed-test peak.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
Audio Stereo AAC, 128 kbps YouTube lists 128 kbps as its recommended stereo audio bitrate.
Streaming protocol RTMPS where available YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

OBS labels and encoder options can differ by version, operating system, and hardware, so select the equivalent controls available in your setup. YouTube’s guidance describes sending one live stream; YouTube transcodes live streams for viewers, so OBS does not need to send a separate rendition for each viewer’s device.

Choose a bitrate that fits your hotspot

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. The figures below are platform recommendations published by Google / YouTube Help and accessed in 2026; they are not measurements of Indian mobile networks.

Output YouTube recommended H.264 video bitrate Approximate video payload per 24 hours
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 43.2 GB
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 64.8 GB
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 108 GB

Data figures are arithmetic estimates using bitrate × time ÷ 8 and decimal GB. They exclude audio, protocol overhead, retransmissions, and variable-rate behavior; your carrier may account for usage differently. At the 4 Mbps starting point, the video payload alone is about 43.2 GB per day, or roughly 1.3 TB over 30 days before those additions. Check your plan’s allowance and run a shorter session before relying on it for continuous use.

A lower resolution or frame rate can be a sensible test when upload capacity is limited, but no single setting can be called reliable for all Indian 4G hotspots. Coverage, location, carrier, equipment, and changing network conditions all matter. A quick peak-speed result does not show that the connection can hold a bitrate continuously.

Configure OBS and test before committing to 24/7

  1. Measure where the stream will run. Check upload performance at the actual computer and hotspot location. Look for sustained capacity, not just a short peak. YouTube recommends using a speed test to check upload bitrate.
  2. Set the output profile. In OBS, choose 1280×720 at 30 fps as the initial test, then select H.264, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval in the available output and encoder controls. Start with the bitrate appropriate to the output, using YouTube’s recommendation as a reference rather than an assurance.
  3. Set audio and transport. Use stereo AAC at 128 kbps as YouTube’s audio recommendation. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, use the provided stream key in OBS and select RTMPS if the available connection configuration supports it.
  4. Run a representative test stream. Use an unlisted or otherwise suitable test and include the real scene, motion, and audio. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  5. Watch stream health and connection status. If the test shows connection trouble, change one setting at a time. Reduce bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate, then test again; avoid assuming that a short successful session proves round-the-clock stability.
  6. Check the operating conditions. For a long run, verify power, device temperature, data allowance, carrier terms, and coverage at the chosen location. These are practical checks, not guaranteed causes or fixes.

YouTube’s live-stream setup and encoder recommendations are at YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Its connection and testing guidance is at YouTube Help: Fix live stream issues.

Troubleshoot common test failures

  • OBS or YouTube reports an unstable connection: The selected bitrate may exceed sustained upload capacity, or the mobile connection may vary. Lower the bitrate or output demands, then test again at the same location.
  • A speed test looks fast, but the stream still struggles: A brief peak does not establish continuous capacity. Test the actual stream for a meaningful period and monitor stream health.
  • Video looks poor or motion breaks up: Check that the selected output and bitrate match the encoder recommendation and the connection’s stable capacity. Test representative motion; lower the output if the connection cannot support the current choice.
  • Audio is missing or problematic: Confirm OBS is sending the intended audio source and that the output uses stereo AAC. Verify the audio in a test stream before leaving it unattended.
  • Connection trouble persists after lowering settings: Follow YouTube’s connection troubleshooting guidance, including trying a different server and checking whether network software is affecting OBS traffic. These are diagnostic steps, not a promise of a fix.
  • The stream works briefly but not for a full day: Recheck power, temperature, carrier data terms, and location-specific coverage, and test longer before depending on the setup. The cited platform guidance does not establish reliability for a particular Indian carrier or hotspot.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to keeping OBS and a hotspot running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
