Capture a responsive screenshot at a chosen viewport
Install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer, then use this ES module script. It launches a browser, configures a 390-by-844 CSS-pixel viewport, navigates to the page, and saves a full-page PNG.

}Replace the URL and filename with your own. The dimensions are an example viewport, not a named phone profile. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents the page capture workflow at pptr.dev/guides/screenshots, and the setViewport API reference recommends setting viewport properties before navigation.
Capture a breakpoint matrix
For several responsive sizes, reuse the page and navigate once, then resize and capture each viewport. The viewport change can cause a resize or, in some cases when mobile or touch properties are involved, a reload. If the page must initialize at each size, create a fresh page, set its viewport, then navigate for each capture.

}Use distinct names so later captures do not overwrite earlier ones. For meaningful visual comparisons, keep the URL, browser version, viewport, device scale factor, page state, timing, and capture scope consistent except for the variable you intend to compare.
Choose viewport sizing or named-device emulation
Set a custom viewport
page.setViewport() sets the visible page dimensions in CSS pixels. Set width, height, and optionally deviceScaleFactor before page.goto(). A viewport alone does not necessarily reproduce a real device: sites may also respond to user-agent strings or mobile-specific metrics.
Emulate a known device
When you need a preset device profile, use Puppeteer’s KnownDevices entry and page.emulate(). Emulation applies device viewport metrics and the user agent. Apply it before navigation so the site sees those settings when it loads.

}Device preset names can change between Puppeteer releases. Check the KnownDevices reference and use a name available in your installed version. For a site that only needs a breakpoint check, explicit viewport dimensions are simpler and make the tested width and height clear.

Choose what part of the page to capture
Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() captures the current viewport by default. Set a capture option when you need a different scope:

Wait for the page state you need
Navigation completion is not always the same as visual readiness. The example uses waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but a page with persistent network requests may never reach a network-idle state, while content inserted later may appear after navigation has completed. Choose a wait condition that fits the site, then wait explicitly for a key element or a short delay if the page’s own behavior requires it.

- Use an appropriate
waitUntilnavigation condition; do not assume network idle suits every site. - For content that appears after navigation, wait for a selector that signals readiness, such as a rendered results panel.
- For lazy-loaded images, a full-page screenshot does not by itself prove that every image has loaded. Check the page behavior and wait for its content as needed.
- For repeatable comparisons, keep interaction state, data, timing, and screenshot scope the same across runs.
Set output format and image options
The screenshot options include path, type, quality, omitBackground, clip, and fullPage. When you provide a path, Puppeteer can infer the image type from its extension. Confirm supported image formats in the documentation for your installed version before depending on a specific format.
qualityapplies to non-PNG output; it does not change PNG output.omitBackground: truehides the default white background, allowing a transparent screenshot where the page content permits it.fullPage: truecaptures beyond the current viewport; use it when you need the entire page rather than a user’s current screen.clipdefines a rectangular capture region and should be used when a focused portion is more useful than a full page.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot shows the wrong responsive layout
Set the viewport or device emulation before page.goto(). Changing the viewport afterward can resize the page and, for some mobile or touch settings, trigger a reload. If a named-device result matters, emulate the device rather than setting only its dimensions.
The script waits indefinitely or captures too early
A network-idle wait can be unsuitable for pages with continuous requests. Choose a different navigation condition or wait for a specific selector that indicates the content you need is ready. If delayed content is part of the design, allow for that behavior before capture.

An element screenshot fails
Confirm the selector matched an element and that it remains attached to the document until the screenshot call. If the page replaces the component during rendering, wait for the final element and query it again.
The file type or quality is unexpected
Check the output path extension and the installed version’s supported screenshot types. Quality affects non-PNG formats only; it is not a PNG compression control.
The full-page image is unexpectedly large
Full-page output can be much taller than a viewport screenshot. Capture the current viewport, a clip, or a single element when the goal is to inspect a particular screen or component.

Does Puppeteer capture a full page by default?
No. The default is the current viewport; set fullPage: true for the full page.
Can I capture responsive screenshots without emulating a phone?
