For an OBS-based YouTube stream, the OBS community Media Playlist Source plugin is the clearest documented option for remembering which file was playing when OBS restarts. Its listing says OBS will play that file again after a restart, but it does not say the plugin restores the exact position within the file, starts OBS after the server itself reboots, or reconnects the broadcast to YouTube. Those are separate recovery jobs.
What “resume after a restart” can mean
A stream can fail at several different points. A playlist source may remember a file, while OBS is closed; OBS may restart, while the operating system remains up; or the whole server may reboot. Even if OBS and the source come back, the encoder still needs to reconnect to the intended YouTube stream. A claim about one step is not proof that the others happen automatically.
- Remember the current file: Which playlist item was playing before OBS restarted?
- Restore its position: Does playback continue from the prior timestamp or begin that file again?
- Launch after a server reboot: Does the operating system start OBS and load the right scene?
- Reconnect to YouTube: Does OBS resume sending to the correct stream key, and what happens to the live broadcast during the interruption?
- Keep the broadcast uninterrupted: A restart necessarily interrupts the encoder connection; playlist persistence alone does not establish a seamless continuation.
Best-documented OBS option: Media Playlist Source
The OBS Project Forum listing for Media Playlist Source describes it as an alternative to VLC Video Source and says it saves the currently playing file so that file will be played when OBS restarts. The listing specifies version 0.1.3, a minimum OBS Studio version of 30.0.0, and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. These are details reported by the plugin listing, not results from controlled reboot tests.
The supported claim is file-level recovery after OBS restarts. The listing does not specify whether playback resumes at the same elapsed position or starts the saved file from its beginning. It also does not establish that OBS launches after an operating-system reboot, reconnects to YouTube, or restores a broadcast without interruption. Confirm those behaviors with the plugin version, operating system, playlist, and stream configuration you actually plan to use.

Set up and verify recovery rather than assuming it
The available documentation does not describe one end-to-end procedure that guarantees playlist recovery, server startup, and YouTube reconnection. Treat these as separate checks before relying on an unattended stream.
- Choose the source based on the recovery you need. If resuming the current file after an OBS restart matters, review the Media Playlist Source listing and confirm its version and OBS requirements. If using VLC Video Source, install VLC and configure the documented playlist options; do not assume the current item persists across restart.
- Check file and playlist behavior. Test the actual media files and playlist format used in your stream. Note whether a restart returns to the saved file, where within it playback begins, and what happens if a file is missing or the playlist changes. The plugin listing does not specify these edge cases.
- Check OBS startup on the server. Separately verify that the operating system launches OBS after a full reboot and loads the intended scene and source. The plugin’s restart description does not cover operating-system startup.
- Check YouTube’s stream configuration. Verify the destination and stream key in YouTube’s live settings. YouTube’s “Reuse settings” can reuse metadata, settings, and the key, but it does not restore the encoder’s media state. Keep the stream key private.
- Run a controlled test. Test an OBS-only restart and a full server reboot separately. For each, record which file plays, whether its position is restored, whether OBS reconnects to YouTube, and what viewers see during the interruption. The cited sources provide no controlled restart results or recovery-time measurements.
Troubleshoot the part that failed
- The wrong file plays after OBS restarts: Confirm that the Media Playlist Source is in use and that the installed plugin version matches the one you evaluated. The listing supports restoration of the current file, not every possible playlist change or file-state edge case.
- The right file plays, but from the beginning: The listing does not promise exact seek-position restoration. Do not treat file recovery as timestamp recovery.
- OBS does not return after a server reboot: This is a host startup issue, not evidence that the playlist source failed. Verify the server’s automatic-launch setup and whether OBS loads the intended scene.
- OBS is open but YouTube is not receiving the stream: Check the stream destination and key, then distinguish an encoder reconnection issue from a source-playlist issue. OBS notes that intermittent disconnections can result from network problems between the computer and remote ingest server; see OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
- The stream reconnects but viewers cannot rewind as expected: Viewer DVR is separate from source recovery. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
- You are using HLS and suspect its playlist limit: YouTube’s maximum of five outstanding segments concerns the rolling segment playlist sent to its ingest service, not the OBS playlist of media files.
