To prevent clipping, identify where your playlist audio enters OBS, play its loudest section, and lower the level before it reaches full scale. If peaks still get too close to 0 dBFS, add OBS’s Limiter to the captured source and put it last in that source’s filter chain. Then record and listen to a representative test. A limiter controls peaks; it will not make songs with different mastering levels sound equally loud.

First, identify how the playlist audio reaches OBS

The right control depends on what OBS is capturing. Check the OBS mixer while audio is playing and identify the meter that responds to the playlist.

Playback path What to check Practical trade-off
OBS Media Source Inspect the Media Source in the mixer. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among its supported audio formats. OBS Project, Media Sources A dedicated source makes the playlist level easier to distinguish from other audio. Media Source is for an individual media file rather than a playlist interface.
OBS VLC Video source Inspect the VLC Video source. It provides playlist controls, including loop and shuffle. VLC must be installed; the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. OBS Project, Media Sources Useful when you need playlist order, looping, or shuffle controls in OBS; it adds a VLC installation dependency.
YouTube playlist in a browser Confirm whether OBS captures that browser/application specifically or captures desktop audio. Watch the meter for the source that actually carries the browser sound. OBS Project, Sources Guide Application capture can isolate the browser; desktop capture may include other sounds, making the level harder to control.

Do not infer the OBS level from a browser’s volume percentage. Use the OBS meter for the captured signal and check the final mix as well as the individual source. The OBS sources guide describes audio, desktop, and application capture options. OBS Project, Sources Guide

Find clipping before it reaches the stream or recording

Digital full scale is 0 dBFS. The signal that OBS ultimately records or streams must remain below that ceiling to avoid clipping distortion. OBS can process floating-point audio above 0 dBFS internally, so the relevant check is the output signal—not simply whether a source is present. 1. Play the loudest song, chorus, or transition you expect in the playlist. A quiet intro will not reveal the worst peak.
  2. Watch the meter for the actual captured source and its peak-hold indicator. The OBS Audio Mixer Guide says red is close to clipping and that the top indicator shows the loudest level in the previous 20 seconds. OBS Project, Audio Mixer Guide (published 2026-04-03)
  3. Check the combined output if more than one source is audible. Two individually safe sources can add together to produce a hotter mix.
  4. Leave headroom rather than aiming for the red region. The OBS technical guide’s -20 dBFS alignment level and -9 dBFS permitted maximum are meter-design values, not universal targets for every playlist or program source. OBS Project, Audio Mixer Technical Details

Lower the level at the source, then in OBS

  1. Reduce the player or media-source volume at the earliest point you can control. If the original file is already too loud, lower its playback level before it enters later processing.
  2. Lower the OBS fader for the source if its meter still approaches full scale. Make the change while the loudest material is playing.
  3. Play through any other audio sources that will be mixed with the playlist and watch the combined output path.
  4. Record a representative test segment in OBS. Listen to the resulting file for distortion, sudden level changes, and whether the playlist remains audible. Metering helps locate peaks, but listening to the output catches problems that a single source meter may miss.

Add and set OBS’s Limiter when peaks still need a ceiling

A limiter caps peaks from the source it processes. In OBS, add the Limiter to the source carrying the playlist and put it last in that source’s filter chain. The OBS Project’s Limiter Filter documentation states: “When using a Limiter it should be the last filter in your chain.” OBS Project, Limiter Filter (published 2022-01-12)

  1. In the Audio Mixer, open the playlist source’s filter menu, or right-click that source and choose its filters.
  2. Add the Limiter filter to that source.
  3. Set its threshold below 0 dBFS to retain headroom. OBS documents a default threshold of -6.00 dB and a release of 60 ms; these are software defaults, not settings guaranteed to suit every playlist. OBS Project, Limiter Filter
  4. Move the Limiter to the final position in that source’s filter chain. OBS’s Filters Guide explains how to manage source filters. OBS Project, Filters Guide
  5. Replay the loudest section and make another test recording. If the output still clips, confirm that the Limiter is on the source actually being captured and check for overload after multiple sources are summed.

A compressor is a different tool: it reduces dynamic peaks, and its behavior can also duck desktop or program audio when a microphone speaks. Neither a compressor nor a limiter automatically matches the perceived loudness of separately mastered songs. OBS Project, Compressor Filter

Level-match tracks that jump in loudness

If one playlist item sounds much louder or quieter than the next, adjust the files themselves with an audio editor or mastering workflow before playback, then recheck their peaks through OBS. A limiter can prevent a loud peak from crossing its ceiling, but it cannot raise a quiet track to match a loud one without changing how peaks behave. The reviewed OBS documentation does not establish a playlist-specific YouTube LUFS target, so there is no single official LUFS number to apply as an OBS requirement.

Troubleshoot the point where distortion starts

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Distortion is audible before OBS processing The player, source, or original audio file is overloaded or already clipped. Lower the player or source level. If the waveform was clipped in the original file, gain reduction in OBS cannot restore the missing detail; use a clean source or master if available.
The captured source meter approaches 0 dBFS The source level or OBS fader is too high, or the limiter is missing or applied elsewhere. Lower the level earlier in the chain and then the OBS fader. Verify that the Limiter is attached to the source whose meter responds.
Each source looks safe, but the output distorts Multiple sources may be summing to a higher combined level. Check and meter the combined recording or stream path; lower contributing sources as needed.
Some songs are consistently louder than others The playlist files have different mastered or perceived loudness. Level-match the files before playback, then retest the loudest peaks. A limiter alone will not equalize track loudness.
Browser audio is missing, doubled, or too loud OBS may be capturing the wrong application or desktop mix, or capturing audio through more than one route. Confirm the intended application or desktop source, monitor the source that responds, and make a test recording to verify the actual route.
The meter stays below full scale but the recording still sounds wrong The source may have been clipped before OBS, levels may jump between tracks, or the test did not include the loudest material. Listen to the original file and the captured test, test the loudest section, and inspect the combined mix rather than relying on one meter alone.
