For a mostly static Marathi devotional playlist, start with OBS set to YouTube over RTMPS, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Choose either 720p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps or 1080p at 30 fps and 5 Mbps, depending on what your computer and upload connection can sustain. These are practical starting settings based on YouTube’s encoder guidance, not a tested OBS preset.

Recommended OBS settings

YouTube’s encoder table supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS; H.264 is a conservative choice for broad compatibility. For a still image or slow-moving visual, 30 fps is generally sufficient. YouTube supports up to 60 fps, but a higher frame rate is usually unnecessary for low-motion artwork.

OBS setting Starting value When to use it
Service/protocol YouTube; RTMPS where available Use YouTube’s secure ingest option where OBS offers it.
Video encoder H.264 A conservative compatibility choice.
Rate control CBR YouTube lists constant bitrate for live encoding.
Output resolution and frame rate 1280 × 720 at 30 fps, or 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps Choose based on connection stability, encoding capacity, and how much detail the artwork needs.
Video bitrate 3 Mbps for 720p30; 5 Mbps for 1080p30 YouTube’s recommended H.264 rates. Its listed minimums are 2 Mbps and 4 Mbps, respectively.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio Stereo AAC or MP3; 128 kbps; 44.1 kHz YouTube recommends 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio.
Color Rec. 709 for SDR YouTube’s recommended advanced setting for standard dynamic range.

These encoder targets do not guarantee that your internet connection can hold the bitrate continuously. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and choosing quality based on connection reliability. Leave some upload capacity for audio and connection variation rather than using your entire measured upload rate for video.

Set up the YouTube stream and OBS

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. Enable live streaming and check that the channel is verified and has not had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube states streamers must be at least 16.
  2. Create the stream in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy its stream details into OBS. Keep the stream key private: YouTube describes it as being like the stream’s password and address.
  3. Configure OBS output and audio. Apply the settings in the table. Build a simple scene with a visual you have rights to use and the playlist audio. Check that OBS is capturing the intended media or desktop audio, and that no microphone, notification sound, or other unintended audio is included.
  4. Test privately or as unlisted. Use audio and visuals similar to the planned broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting, then monitor sound and picture quality during the test.
  5. Monitor the live run. Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicator. OBS says that increasing dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. If that happens, reduce the bitrate or output resolution and test again.
  6. Shut down in order. Stop the event in YouTube Live Control Room, then stop the encoder, following YouTube’s operational guidance.

Check music and visual rights before going live

A song’s devotional or traditional status, availability online, a “free” label, or a credit in the description does not establish permission to livestream it. Rights in a composition can differ from rights in a particular recording. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the exact audio and visuals you plan to use.

YouTube’s livestream terms say the content provider warrants having all necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; detected content can lead to interruption or termination. If a licensor has authorized the material, ask whether the channel must be added to that owner’s Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.

YouTube describes copyright-safe music as public-domain music or music used with the copyright owner’s permission. Its guidance points to the YouTube Audio Library, original music, and properly licensed third-party music. For any third-party license, check whether it covers the intended live use, replay or archive, monetization, territories, and duration; license terms vary.

Choose between 720p30 and 1080p30

  • Use 720p30 at 3 Mbps when upload capacity is limited or stability matters more than fine detail in the visual.
  • Use 1080p30 at 5 Mbps when your connection and computer can sustain it and the artwork or animation benefits from the extra detail.
  • Retest after a change. A speed test is only an indicator; monitor the actual stream for dropped frames and YouTube stream-health warnings.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • Dropped frames or a yellow/red OBS connection indicator: The connection may be unstable or unable to maintain the selected bitrate. Lower bitrate or output resolution, then test again.
  • YouTube preview has no sound: Confirm the intended media or desktop audio source is active in OBS, check its level meter, and ensure the scene is not capturing the wrong device. Test with the same source planned for the stream.
  • Unexpected microphone or notification sounds: Disable or mute sources that are not part of the playlist, and repeat a private or unlisted test.
  • Live stream interrupted after matching third-party material: Review the rights for the specific recording and visuals, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
  • Unclear or unstable picture: Verify that the stream is using the intended resolution and bitrate; if the connection cannot sustain the chosen profile, step down to 720p30 and retest.
