A Mac mini can run encoder software that sends a prerecorded video feed to YouTube Live around the clock. To make that setup dependable, keep the Mac awake while its display is off, configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key, provide stable upload bandwidth, and plan for recording and recovery. A Mac mini can still lose power, network access, or its encoder process, so do not treat these settings as a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is eligible for live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance and check YouTube’s current eligibility requirements.
- A Mac mini with encoder software compatible with your macOS version. For a single prerecorded feed, software encoding is a sensible starting point; dedicated hardware may suit a production that needs external video or audio inputs or other specialized capabilities.
- The video and audio you intend to stream, plus enough local storage if you plan to record a backup.
- A reliable internet connection with enough measured upload capacity for the total bitrate you plan to send.
macOS settings vary by model and release. The names and availability of Energy options may differ from the paths below, so check the controls shown on your Mac.
Set up YouTube Live and the encoder
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup prompts for your channel. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to become available.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not control the broadcast. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Choose YouTube if the encoder offers it, or enter the stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Select the feed source and confirm that the correct video and audio are routed to the output.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the source and connection. Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for your intended resolution and frame rate; do not copy a value intended for a different format. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Codec and ingest options can change, so check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your encoder’s supported settings.
- Test before going public. Start the encoder early enough to see the preview in Live Control Room, confirm the stream page and audio, and check stream health. YouTube recommends setting up encoders in advance; its event guidance says to set up at least two hours ahead and recommends starting encoders 15 minutes before a scheduled event.
Keep the Mac mini awake with the display off
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy on the desktop Mac.
- Turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off, if that option is available. You can let the display turn off; the important part is keeping the Mac and encoder process awake.
- If available, configure the Mac to start up after power is restored. This can help the computer return after an outage, but it does not necessarily relaunch the encoder or resume the YouTube broadcast.
- Before running the Mac mini without a connected display, arrange and test a way to manage it remotely. Confirm that you can check the encoder and recover the session without physically connecting a monitor.
Apple’s support guidance for setting up a Mac mini as a server warns that if the Mac sleeps, currently running tasks and processes may be interrupted. Preventing or delaying sleep can increase power use. A restart-after-power-loss option addresses startup of the computer, not restoration of the complete streaming session; test that sequence separately.
Size the upload connection and choose Ethernet or Wi-Fi
Use upload capacity—not download speed—to judge whether your connection can carry the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate. For example, if your configured stream and any simultaneous backup stream together send at a given bitrate, the available upload capacity should exceed that total by the recommended margin. Do not assume your internet plan’s advertised speed is what the Mac mini will consistently receive.

- 8-core GPU with up to 6x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games*

- Test the actual outbound connection where the Mac mini will run. A shared connection may have less capacity available than the plan’s headline rate.
- Choose bitrate based on the resolution, frame rate, codec, and number of streams you are sending, and consult YouTube’s current bitrate table for that combination. There is no single upload-speed figure that applies to every continuous stream.
- Wired Ethernet is an optional way to reduce dependence on Wi-Fi when the Mac mini can be placed near the router. It is not a YouTube requirement. Compare the measured stability and upload capacity in the location and connection you will actually use.
- Remember that a network interruption can break the broadcast. A good speed result at setup does not guarantee that the connection will remain available.
Record a local backup and plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says it can automatically archive a live stream that lasts less than 12 hours. It also warns that a stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not count on one complete YouTube replay for a 24/7 broadcast. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends recording a local archive as a backup.
If your encoder supports local recording, enable it and check that the output file grows while the stream is running. Plan where recordings will be stored and how they will be rotated: long recordings can use substantial disk space, and the space needed depends on the recording settings and duration. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal storage capacity or a required drive type. Confirm that any chosen storage is compatible with your particular Mac mini and can sustain the recording workload.

Test the full failure and recovery path
A continuous stream depends on more than sleep settings. Test what happens when the encoder stops, the network drops, or the Mac mini loses power. In particular, verify whether your encoder can restart and reconnect to the scheduled YouTube stream, and whether you can monitor and restore it remotely. Do not assume that setting the Mac to start after power is restored also restarts the encoder session.
- Run a representative video and audio test, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Confirm that the local recording file is being written and that you can play it back.
- If you use a backup encoder or connection, test failover rather than relying on the fact that it is configured.
- Check how much recording storage remains and establish a rotation or cleanup process before leaving the stream unattended.
- Consider an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) if short power interruptions are a concern. It can provide temporary power, but it does not ensure that the internet remains available or that the broadcast will recover automatically.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The stream stops when the display turns off or the Mac is left unattended. | The Mac or encoder went to sleep or stopped running. | Check the Energy setting that prevents automatic sleep with the display off. Confirm the encoder is still active; test the configuration with the display off before relying on it. |
| The preview or stream health shows interruptions. | The encoder settings exceed the available upload capacity, or the connection is unstable. | Measure upload capacity at the Mac mini, account for all outgoing streams, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and consider testing wired Ethernet where practical. |
| The encoder cannot connect to YouTube. | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the channel may not yet have live streaming enabled. | Check the URL and key in the encoder and YouTube Studio. Confirm activation and eligibility; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Reset an exposed key. |
| The Mac restarts after an outage but the live does not resume. | Power-restoration startup does not necessarily relaunch the encoder or restore its session. | Test the complete restart and reconnect sequence. Arrange remote access so you can inspect and restart the encoder if needed. |
| A long stream is missing from YouTube’s archive. | Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Use a local recording backup and verify during the broadcast that the file is growing. |
| The local recording stops or storage fills. | The destination may have run out of space or failed to sustain the recording. | Check free space and file growth, confirm storage compatibility and write performance for your chosen settings, and rotate recordings deliberately. |
