OBS Studio or vMix can handle video production and encoding; Restream can distribute a stream and supports embedded captions in a documented YouTube workflow; specialist caption tools or services can supply caption data. YouTube automatic live captions may suit some English-language streams, but they are conditional and do not remain on the live archive.
How to choose software for a continuous YouTube stream with captions
First decide what the captions must do: appear during the live broadcast, support a particular language or caption standard, or remain available on the replay. Then verify that the entire route—from caption source, through encoder or delivery service, to YouTube—supports that requirement. A program that can stream video does not necessarily provide a caption feed.

- For video production and encoding: compare OBS Studio and vMix against your operating system, production needs, and restart plan. The available documentation does not establish that either alone provides a complete YouTube closed-caption workflow.
- For distribution: consider Restream if its multistreaming or channel-management role is useful. Its documented embedded-caption workflow has specific requirements.
- For caption delivery: use a verified embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 workflow or a supported HTTP caption feed when captions need to be dependable, retained to a defined standard, or available in a non-English language.
- For a hosted studio: StreamYard’s help page says built-in live-stream captions are not available. Destination-generated captions or Chrome viewer-local captions are not the same as a guaranteed caption feed sent with the stream.
Software and caption workflow comparison
| Option | Role and caption support | Best fit and checks |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | General-purpose streaming and encoding software. The cited material does not establish that OBS alone supplies a complete YouTube caption workflow. | Choose for video production needs, then check the specific plugin or encoder’s caption transport and compatibility with YouTube. |
| vMix | Windows-oriented live production software that lists YouTube as a destination. The cited result does not establish a complete caption-feed feature. | Assess production controls, inputs, hardware and operating-system requirements, licensing, and caption support for the exact version and output configuration. |
| Restream | Distribution service compatible with OBS, Streamlabs, vMix, and other encoders. It documents embedded CEA-608/708 captions for normal-latency YouTube streams over RTMP or SRT when captions are enabled in both the encoder and YouTube settings. | Consider when multistreaming or channel management is useful. Confirm normal latency, encoder settings, channel controls, and current plan limits. |
| StreamYard | Hosted live-streaming studio for multiple destinations. Its help page says built-in live captions are unavailable; destination captions and Chrome’s viewer-local captions do not guarantee a YouTube caption feed. | Useful to assess for remote production, but not as the sole solution when captions must be delivered with the live stream. |
| CaptionMaker / StreamText.Net | Named by YouTube as supported software or services for live caption workflows. YouTube describes StreamText.Net as cloud caption delivery compatible with speech-to-text platforms. | Compare the caption source (human or automated), language, latency, accuracy needs, service costs, and provider setup instructions. |
How YouTube receives live captions
YouTube’s guidance says, “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” Captions may be embedded in the video signal or sent using supported software through an HTTP caption feed. For the described 608/708 workflow, YouTube currently supports one caption track, although the underlying standard can carry more. Each stream entry point can have one caption feed.
Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions
In this workflow, caption data travels within the video stream. Restream documents support for embedded CEA-608/708 with normal-latency YouTube streams over RTMP or SRT when the feature is enabled in both the encoder and YouTube settings. Confirm your exact encoder configuration and stream mode before relying on this route.

HTTP caption feed
YouTube also documents a separate HTTP caption-ingestion workflow and names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net among supported software or services. Follow the provider’s current setup instructions and confirm the language, timing, and feed configuration for your stream.
Automatic live captions
YouTube’s live automatic captions can be the simplest option if your channel and stream qualify and English captions meet the need. YouTube Help describes English-only availability and a staged rollout, so do not assume the feature is available for every channel or stream. YouTube also states, “After the live stream ends, live automatic captions won’t remain on the video.” A new caption track may be generated for the video-on-demand replay, and it may differ from the live captions. Plan a separate archive-caption workflow if the replay must have captions.
Choose by caption requirement
English captions for live viewing
Check whether YouTube automatic live captions are available for your channel and stream, then test them before the continuous broadcast. If the captions must persist on the replay, arrange a separate VOD caption track instead of relying on live captions to carry over.
Non-English captions or a defined caption standard
Plan a professional caption path and verify that it delivers embedded 608/708 captions or a supported HTTP feed to YouTube. Confirm the required language and specific setup with the caption provider; the available documentation does not establish feature support for every version, language, or service plan.
Multistreaming alongside YouTube
Add Restream only if its distribution functions are useful. For captions, follow its documented normal-latency requirements and enable the relevant caption settings at both the encoder and YouTube. Do not assume that captions configured for one destination will work identically at every destination.
Plan a continuous broadcast beyond the caption feed
A continuous stream needs an operating plan as well as compatible software. Decide who will monitor the broadcast, how it will restart after an interruption, what happens if the caption source fails, and whether the archive is part of the requirement. The available product documentation does not establish a tested 24/7 reliability winner among these options.
Keep transmission and archive limits separate
Restream’s Help Center, in a page dated July 9, 2026, says YouTube does not limit stream duration but archives streams only when they are under 12 hours. Treat this as the vendor’s description of YouTube behavior, not a guarantee for every future stream; recheck current YouTube behavior before building an archive plan around an uninterrupted broadcast.
Account for event-caption delay where applicable
YouTube’s event guidance describes a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for its event caption-ingestion setup. This is workflow-specific guidance, not a universal delay requirement for every live stream. Check the instructions for the exact caption route you select.
Common caption and continuity problems
- The video is live, but captions are missing: the encoder may not be sending captions, the caption method may not match YouTube’s supported route, or one end of the embedded workflow may be disabled. Verify the caption source, transport, encoder settings, YouTube settings, and stream mode as a complete chain.
- Captions work in one destination but not YouTube: destination caption features are not necessarily a feed sent to YouTube. Check support and settings for YouTube specifically.
- Automatic captions are unavailable: availability is conditional and the documented rollout is limited. Use a verified caption feed if the requirement cannot depend on eligibility.
- Live captions disappear from the replay: this is expected for YouTube automatic live captions. Add or generate a separate caption track for the archived video.
- Captions stop after a restart: check that the caption source and feed reconnect along with the video encoder. Include caption-feed recovery in the monitoring and restart plan.
- A long stream is missing from the archive: do not assume an uninterrupted broadcast will be retained as a single YouTube replay. Confirm current archive behavior and make a recording or archive plan suited to the required duration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud rather than requiring a computer or home connection to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and sends to YouTube only.
Each slot supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, plus 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Billing options also include a day, a week, six months, or a year, and you can cancel any time. The service description does not establish a caption-delivery feature, so verify your caption workflow separately if the live broadcast needs captions.
