First check whether playback is actually frozen inside OBS or only appears frozen on YouTube. If OBS’s preview or encoder output has stopped, investigate the source, media or playlist, and OBS logs. If OBS output is still playing normally, focus on the stream’s outbound connection and YouTube’s encoder diagnostics. The right loop setting depends on whether you are repeating one file or playing a playlist.
Identify the source and what it is playing
Before changing settings, note which OBS source is involved and whether the media is local, remote, or a network stream. Also note whether every file transition fails or only one particular transition. These details help distinguish a loop configuration issue from a problem with a file, playlist entry, or stream delivery.
- Media Source: OBS’s built-in source for an individual media file. Its Loop option controls whether that file plays again when it reaches the end.
- VLC Video: A source that uses VLC libraries and can play a playlist. Its Loop Playlist option controls whether the playlist starts over after the last entry.
- VLC network stream: If VLC Video is receiving a network stream rather than playing a local playlist, a stall may involve that input as well as OBS or YouTube delivery.
OBS’s built-in Media Source supports media types including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Confirm that the affected file is among the formats your source is expected to play.
Check the loop control that matches your source
One file in Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene containing the affected source.
- In the Sources list, select the Media Source and open its properties.
- Check Loop. Enable it if the single file should start again after it finishes.
- Apply the change and watch the source through the next file ending. Do not assume a loop setting for one source controls a separate playlist source.
A playlist in VLC Video
- Select the scene and open the properties for the VLC Video source.
- Check that the playlist contains the intended files in the intended order.
- Check Loop Playlist if the playlist should restart after its final entry.
- Confirm VLC is installed. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for this source.
- Review Visibility Behaviour and choose behavior appropriate to your scene: playback can continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible.
Do not confuse nearby Media Source settings with looping
- Restart playback when source becomes active restarts the file when the source is in the current scene and becomes visible. It is not the end-of-file loop control.
- Show nothing when playback ends hides the source after playback ends. It does not make the file repeat.
- Close file when inactive frees memory when the source is hidden or not on the current scene. OBS notes that showing it again may involve a short reload period.
Determine whether the freeze is in OBS or on YouTube
Observe OBS while the stream is affected. Check the preview, the source’s playback, the audio meter, and a local recording if one is already being made. The key question is whether OBS’s own output continues to advance.

YouTube’s encoder guidance also recommends updating the encoder. Compare what OBS is producing with what YouTube receives rather than relying only on the YouTube playback window to locate the fault.
Check OBS performance when there are signs of a bottleneck
OBS identifies GPU or other resource bottlenecks, complex scenes, and resource-intensive sources or filters as possible performance problems. If the freeze coincides with rendering lag, dropped frames, or encoder warnings, simplify the scene and inspect the relevant OBS log.

- Temporarily disable costly filters or sources to see whether the symptoms change.
- Reduce unnecessary scene complexity.
- Use media resolution appropriate to the canvas and output instead of needlessly high-resolution sources.
- Check OBS’s performance indicators and log for evidence of rendering or encoding trouble before making hardware changes.
A freeze between files does not, by itself, prove that the GPU is overloaded. Avoid treating a hardware upgrade as the default fix without evidence of a bottleneck.
Use forum reports as clues, not confirmed fixes
OBS forum users have described VLC freezes during YouTube playlist playback and long streams. One forum thread is titled “VLC video source freezes after ~6 hours”; that wording is an individual report, not a typical duration, a measured failure rate, or evidence that freezes generally occur after six hours. The reports do not establish a universal cause or a confirmed general fix.

For the same reason, do not assume that scheduled OBS restarts, increasing VLC network caching, or replacing the source will solve the problem in every setup. Test a change against the specific symptoms and check whether it actually improves playback. OBS documents 400 ms as the default VLC Video network-caching value; that default is not a recommended fix for a file-boundary freeze.
Work through the problem in a useful order
- Record the setup: identify Media Source, VLC Video playlist, or VLC network input; note whether files are local or remote and which transition fails.
- Verify the source settings: check Loop for one Media Source file or Loop Playlist for a VLC Video playlist. Check playlist order and visibility behavior where relevant.
- Watch OBS at the failure point: compare the source and preview with the encoder output, audio meter, and any local recording.
- Follow the matching branch: if OBS itself stops, inspect the source, media, and logs; if OBS is healthy but YouTube is not, investigate encoder output and the outbound connection.
- Investigate performance only when symptoms support it: look for rendering lag, dropped frames, encoder warnings, or other resource-related signs.
- Change one thing at a time: observe the next relevant transition so you can tell whether the change helped.
