To reduce OBS connection drops during a YouTube playlist stream, first check whether OBS is actually dropping frames. On Windows, try Settings → Advanced → Network and enable Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing; keep Bind to IP on Default, and treat IPv4-only as a troubleshooting test rather than a universal fix. These settings may help, but stable streaming also depends on a bitrate your connection can sustain and on resolving problems beyond OBS.

“Playlist stream” does not have a separate network configuration in the OBS guidance covered here. The steps below address the connection from OBS to YouTube’s ingest server, whether your program is a playlist or another kind of stream.

Check whether the problem is dropped frames or viewer buffering

Look at the dropped-frames counter at the bottom of the OBS main window while streaming. If it is rising, OBS is having trouble maintaining its connection to the remote ingest server or sustaining the configured bitrate. The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, explains that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot keep up with.

If the counter is not rising but viewers report lag, buffering, or a stream that keeps loading, do not assume OBS’s network settings are the cause. OBS distinguishes viewer playback problems from broadcaster-side dropped frames: viewers may have different internet connections, devices, and locations. See its Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.

Enable OBS network optimizations on Windows

  1. In OBS Studio, open Settings → Advanced → Network.
  2. On Windows, enable Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. OBS says some users report that these options help with dropped frames or intermittent disconnections. They also add detail to OBS logs, which can help with diagnosis; they are not guaranteed fixes. The options are Windows-only.
  3. Leave Bind to IP set to Default.
  4. If you want to test IP Family → IPv4 Only, try it for a stream and watch the dropped-frames counter. If it makes no difference, restore the default IPv4 and IPv6 selection.
  5. Apply the changes and test your stream. Change one setting at a time where practical, so you can tell whether it affects the problem.

These settings address how OBS handles its network connection; they cannot fix an overloaded upload connection, a faulty network cable, or an ISP routing problem on their own.

Set a bitrate your connection can sustain

A configured video bitrate that is too high for your dependable upload speed can cause dropped frames when the connection fluctuates. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for video bitrate, not a guaranteed safe setting. The appropriate bitrate also depends on how stable your upload is and the streaming service’s limits.

Amazon Basics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter, Compatible with Windows and macOS, Black
  • Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
  • Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
  • Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
  • Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
  1. Check your upload speed under conditions similar to when you plan to stream. Do not treat one unusually high speed-test result as a dependable rate.
  2. Compare the OBS video bitrate with the upload speed you can sustain. If the connection is near its limit or OBS is dropping frames, lower the video bitrate and test again.
  3. Keep other upload activity in mind. Video calls, file uploads, backups, or other streams can reduce the capacity available to OBS.

OBS offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta) as a fallback when the underlying connection problem cannot be resolved. It lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, which can help avoid dropped frames, but the picture quality falls as bitrate is reduced. OBS cautions that dynamic bitrate does not fix the root cause.

Diagnose problems outside OBS

If network optimizations and a lower bitrate do not stop the drops, check the path between your computer and the ingest server rather than repeatedly changing unrelated OBS settings.

Try a wired connection and check network equipment

OBS recommends Ethernet because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you already use a cable, inspect it and try a known-working cable or router port if available. OBS also lists the modem, router, network card, switches, and extenders as possible sources of trouble. These are diagnostic possibilities, not a reason to replace hardware without evidence. If you are unsure, OBS advises contacting your ISP before replacing equipment.

Check software and drivers

  • Temporarily test whether a VPN or security software is interfering with the connection. Keep security protection enabled after testing; if the software is the cause, use an appropriate exception rather than leaving protection disabled.
  • Check whether network-prioritization utilities, including Lenovo Vantage or Killer NIC software, are affecting OBS traffic.
  • Update the network driver through your computer or motherboard maker.

Compare ingest paths and ask your ISP

OBS recommends trying a different ingest server and lowering video bitrate. You can also try another streaming service as a diagnostic comparison: if the symptom differs, that may help narrow down whether the route to a particular service is involved, but changing services does not itself repair an ISP or network problem. If the checks above do not resolve the drops, contact your ISP and describe when the issue occurs and what you have already tested.

If OBS is stable but viewers still see buffering

When OBS’s dropped-frames counter is not increasing, consider audience playback rather than broadcaster connection loss. Viewers may be limited by their own bandwidth, device, or location. OBS notes that YouTube transcodes streams to provide multiple quality options; a consistent keyframe interval helps viewers move smoothly between those options. The OBS material cited here does not establish a current numeric YouTube bitrate or keyframe recommendation, so check YouTube’s current guidance before choosing exact encoder values.

Save a known-good setup for recurring streams

Once a configuration works, save it as an OBS Profile so you can reuse its stream, video, and output settings. OBS Profiles can keep different configurations for platforms or bitrate and resolution choices. They do not save Scenes; if your playlist stream uses a different production layout, save that separately in a Scene Collection. See the OBS Project’s Profiles guide.
