For a pre-recorded YouTube Live loop over 4G, start with 720p at 30 fps, H.264 at 3 Mbps, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and Normal latency—but only if the connection at the streaming location can sustain that bitrate with about 20% upload headroom. YouTube’s figures are encoder recommendations, not a promise about any Indian carrier or location. If your measured upload fluctuates, lower the bitrate or resolution rather than relying on the 4G indicator.

Choose settings from measured upload capacity

Test the actual SIM, device, location, and time of day you plan to use. Use the upload result, not download speed: a fast download test does not show that the connection can reliably send your stream. YouTube recommends a speed test for upload bitrate and advises leaving roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. A 4G icon alone does not establish steady outbound throughput.

For example, a 3 Mbps stream needs about 3.75 Mbps of sustained upload capacity to leave 20% spare; a 5 Mbps stream needs about 6.25 Mbps. Treat these as planning calculations, not carrier performance claims. If you use a backup feed, include the primary and backup bitrates, then leave the reserve on top.

YouTube H.264 reference settings

Resolution and frame rate YouTube recommended live bitrate Approximate upload capacity with 20% spare
720p30 3 Mbps 3.75 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 6.25 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 21.25 Mbps

The bitrate figures are YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingestion values, not measured 4G speeds or guarantees. The upload-capacity column is the arithmetic needed to preserve 20% headroom at those rates. Higher frame rates require substantially more bandwidth. If 720p30 is unstable, reduce the encoder bitrate or resolution and test again rather than forcing a higher preset.

Codec and encoder options

YouTube’s encoder guidance covers H.264, H.265, and AV1, with separate recommended bitrate ranges for each. Those alternatives are useful only when the encoder supports the codec and is actually configured to send it. The table above is specifically for H.264; do not apply its rates to another codec without checking YouTube’s current settings for that codec and protocol.

Set latency and stream parameters

  • Latency: Choose Normal latency for a non-interactive loop. YouTube describes it as the option with the lowest viewer buffering risk. Low and ultra-low latency are intended for progressively more audience interaction and can increase exposure to buffering.
  • Rate control: Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS live ingestion, as YouTube specifies.
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Begin with 720p30 if upload stability is uncertain. Move to 1080p30 only after the location test shows sustained capacity above the selected bitrate with headroom.
  • Protocol: Use the protocol supported by your encoder and follow YouTube’s requirements for the selected protocol and codec.

Prepare the channel, loop, and encoder

  1. Confirm live eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its general live-streaming help page says creators must be at least 16.
  2. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the key like a credential: anyone with access to it can send a feed to that stream.
  3. Configure the encoder. Set the resolution, frame rate, supported codec, bitrate, CBR, and 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265, or AV1; apply the requirements for the specific combination you select.
  4. Check the loop source. Play the full file or playlist through the intended encoder path and confirm the video advances, audio is present, and playback returns to the beginning as intended. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not establish a special loop mode or loop-specific bitrate; loop behavior depends on the tool you use.
  5. Test at the broadcast location. Check signal and upload speed where the device will operate. Inspect the Live Control Room preview, test representative audio and motion, and confirm stream health before depending on the setup.
  6. Check mobile data allowance and power arrangements. YouTube estimates about 10 MB per minute for mobile live streaming. This is a general estimate, not a calculation for a particular Indian operator, plan, or encoder bitrate; check current plan terms and your device’s usage before a long broadcast.

YouTube advises mobile streamers to use a location with a strong signal. Its recommendation to use Ethernet is for streaming from a computer, not an instruction for a mobile 4G connection. If you use an encoder connected through cellular data, test that exact arrangement first.

Plan for long broadcasts and archives

A loop can continue as a live feed, but YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior matters if viewers need to rewind or you need a replay. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording if preserving the broadcast matters, and check that the local archive file is intact and growing.

For a continuous channel, decide in advance whether to end and restart the broadcast before it passes 12 hours, and how you will handle any gap between sessions. Do not assume that one uninterrupted stream will produce a complete YouTube archive.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stream health reports connection instability: Re-test upload where the encoder is running, including at the time the stream will be live. Lower bitrate or resolution until the connection holds with reserve; check signal and avoid selecting settings from download speed.
  • Preview is blank or the encoder cannot connect: Confirm the correct stream URL and stream key are entered for the scheduled YouTube stream, then check that the encoder’s protocol and codec settings match its supported configuration.
  • Playback buffers for viewers: Keep Normal latency for a non-interactive loop, and verify that the encoder can sustain its bitrate. Lower the bitrate if the upload varies rather than using low latency to compensate.
  • Video appears in the live feed but not in the archive: Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. Longer streams may not be captured; use a local recording when an archive is important.
  • Loop restarts incorrectly or audio drops: Test the full playlist or video through the chosen encoder before going live. YouTube does not define a platform-level loop playback setting, so verify the playback tool’s own behavior.

Run the loop from your own 4G setup or the cloud

If you choose a do-it-yourself setup, the key dependency is a tested, sustained upload connection at the location—not simply access to 4G. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi router with SIM slot is one possible way to connect an encoder over cellular data, but it does not fix weak coverage; test local upload performance and confirm device and carrier compatibility before buying anything.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live continuously. The setup is: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer and home internet connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or plan details. Start the free first day.
