Yes—but an external SSD only stores the video files or, on compatible equipment, a local recording. It does not create or send a YouTube live stream. For a computer-based setup, the computer, encoder, and reliable internet connection must keep running; the SSD is optional storage. A 24/7 stream therefore depends on the whole setup, not the drive alone.
What the SSD does in a live-stream setup
There are two distinct uses for an external SSD:
- Playback storage: The encoder reads pre-recorded video files from the SSD and turns them into a live feed for YouTube. The computer or other encoder and its internet connection still do the encoding and delivery.
- Local archive storage: Some compatible encoders can save a local recording to external storage. YouTube’s encoder information includes an example of a standalone encoder that can record to USB storage, but that does not mean every encoder supports every SSD.
YouTube does not say an external SSD is required for livestreaming, nor does it certify one as a 24/7 streaming appliance. The drive is a possible part of a setup, not a replacement for the encoder or network.
What you need to check before relying on it continuously
- Confirm live-stream eligibility. YouTube’s setup guidance says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- Check drive and encoder compatibility. Verify that the encoder can read your source files from the SSD; if you want a local archive, confirm that it can write to that drive. Test with the actual SSD, port, cable, file system, and encoder. Compatibility is system-specific.
- Set the stream to suit your connection. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and stream settings before going live, then watching stream health and dashboard messages. Review YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations.
- Set keyframes appropriately. For the encoder settings it documents, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm the current encoder settings guidance.
- If recording, verify the archive. Check that the local archive file is intact and continues growing. Estimate storage from the selected recording format and duration; YouTube does not provide a universal SSD capacity or endurance figure for a 24-hour recording.
- Test failure and recovery. Run the complete setup for the intended duration. Check what happens after a computer restart, encoder crash, SSD disconnection, or internet interruption. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and monitoring the stream, but its guidance does not promise automatic recovery for a single-drive local setup.
Monitor the stream, not just the drive
A drive can remain connected while the broadcast has a different problem: playback may stop, the encoder may fail, or the connection may drop. YouTube’s preparation guidance advises continuously monitoring streams for audio and video quality. Watch stream health and dashboard messages, and verify any local archive separately rather than assuming a healthy-looking broadcast means the recording is intact.
There is no universal SSD interface, file system, capacity, speed, or endurance requirement established for 24/7 streaming in YouTube’s cited guidance. Consult the documentation for your specific computer or encoder and test the whole chain before depending on it.

Local SSD setup or cloud playback?
| Approach | What supplies the video | What must keep running | Archive and recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local computer and encoder | Files on the SSD, read by the encoder | The computer or encoder and internet connection | Optional local recording depends on encoder compatibility; recovery after a failure must be tested for your setup. |
| Cloud playback service | Uploaded files played by the service | The cloud service handles playback; you do not need to keep a home computer on for the stream | Recovery behavior and service terms depend on the provider. Check its published details. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
