The playlist chooses what plays on your server; RTMPS or HLS is the method used to deliver that output to YouTube. Exact playlist controls depend on the media-server product and version.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A media server or encoder that can play or receive your source playlist and send a continuous stream to YouTube.
- The ability to select an ingest protocol supported by that encoder—usually RTMPS for a conventional encoder workflow, or HLS if the encoder and use case require it.
- The source videos and any necessary rights to broadcast them. A playlist being available on your server does not by itself establish permission to stream its contents.
YouTube’s setup documentation explains the destination credentials and encoder handoff, but it does not specify how to load or loop a playlist in an unnamed media server. Menu names and looping options therefore vary by product and version; use that vendor’s documentation for the source-playlist part of the setup.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Create a stream or open the Manage tab to schedule one. Scheduling can create a watch page viewers can share and receive reminders for.
- Set the stream’s title, audience and privacy options. Check the privacy setting for this specific event rather than assuming it will be public; YouTube’s documented defaults can vary by age.
- Open the stream in Live Control Room and locate its server URL and stream key. Copy the values for this stream. Keep the key private: it authorizes the encoder to send content to your broadcast, so do not expose it in screenshots, logs or public examples.
YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance describes this server-URL and stream-key handoff.
Choose how the encoder sends the playlist
The server-side playlist is the sequence of source videos. The ingest protocol is the connection from the server or encoder to YouTube. They are related parts of one workflow, not the same playlist.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
| Protocol | Transport and requirements | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | RTMP secured with SSL/TLS. Google documents port 443 and requires the connection to use the correct endpoint hostname through TLS SNI. | A practical starting point for ordinary encoder ingest, especially when lower latency matters and the encoder supports RTMPS. |
| HLS | HTTPS POST/PUT of segmented media. YouTube’s guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. The developer specification calls for muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, closed GOPs, up to 60 fps, and a Media Playlist rather than a Master Playlist. | Use when the encoder or media workflow requires HLS and its higher latency is acceptable. The encoder must implement YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements. |
Google describes RTMPS as a good choice for ordinary user content, particularly when low latency is required. HLS sends video in segments and YouTube’s guidance describes it as higher latency than RTMP. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide, YouTube’s HLS ingest help and the HLS developer guide for protocol details.
Configure the media server or encoder
- Open the server’s live-output, broadcast-destination or encoder settings. The precise path and labels depend on the product and version.
- Choose the protocol you intend to use. For RTMPS, select an RTMPS destination and enter the YouTube server URL from Live Control Room. Do not substitute a plain RTMP connection if the chosen endpoint requires RTMPS.
- Enter the stream key in the key field. If the software combines the URL and key into one destination field, follow its instructions for the YouTube endpoint; do not publish the key.
- Select the source playlist in the media server and set its playback behavior, such as whether it advances through the list or repeats, if those options are available. These settings are specific to the server; YouTube does not control the source playlist.
- For HLS, configure the encoder to meet YouTube’s documented transport, segment, playlist and media-format requirements. Do not confuse its rolling ingest Media Playlist with an M3U or library playlist used to select videos on your server.
Start the feed and verify it before going live
- Start the playlist output or encoder transmission from the media server.
- Return to the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview.
- Review stream health and confirm that video and audio are arriving as expected. For a scheduled-stream workflow that requires a separate launch action, select Go live only after the preview and health indicators are satisfactory.
- Check the public watch page using its intended privacy setting, and confirm that the expected video and audio are playing.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API status and health fields can flag conditions including low video bitrate, a frame-rate mismatch and missing audio. The practical check is not just that the encoder says it is connected: confirm YouTube receives the feed and that the preview contains the intended content.

End the broadcast and understand the archive
When the event is over, use End Stream in the scheduled-stream workflow and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That rule does not establish what will happen to streams lasting 12 hours or longer; check the current YouTube guidance for your specific broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream setup and ending guidance.
Troubleshooting
YouTube shows no incoming preview
- Confirm the encoder has actually started sending output from the selected playlist.
- Check that the server URL and stream key belong to the same YouTube stream and were copied correctly.
- Verify that the encoder is using the protocol expected by the endpoint—RTMPS versus RTMP, or HLS.
RTMPS connection or SSL error
- Check that the endpoint is the RTMPS server URL shown for the stream, not a plain RTMP destination.
- Verify that the connection uses port 443 and TLS.
- Ensure the TLS SNI hostname matches the endpoint hostname. A mismatch can prevent the secure connection from being established.
HLS ingest is rejected or unstable
- Check that the encoder sends segments and playlists over HTTPS using POST/PUT as required.
- Confirm TS segments are 1–4 seconds long and that the rolling media playlist has no more than five outstanding segments.
- Verify the supported HLS media and playlist format, including muxed M2TS, an accepted video/audio combination, closed GOPs, and a Media Playlist rather than a Master Playlist.
Preview appears but stream health reports a problem
- Inspect the reported video bitrate and frame rate against the encoder’s configured output.
- Check that an audio feed is present and that the intended source is selected.
- Use the health detail as a diagnostic signal: YouTube’s API can identify low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch and missing audio conditions.
The playlist does not advance or repeat as expected
Check the media server’s source-playlist selection and playback settings. YouTube receives the encoder’s outgoing feed; it cannot correct a server-side playlist selection or looping configuration. The exact controls are vendor- and version-specific.
