To show a countdown between videos in a continuous YouTube stream, add it to the program your encoder sends to YouTube. In OBS, the simplest fixed sequence is a VLC Video playlist with a rendered countdown clip placed between the videos. A separate countdown scene gives you more control, but you must arrange a manual or separately configured scene switch; OBS documentation does not promise an automatic switch when a playlist item ends.

Method 1: Put a countdown clip in the playlist

Use this method when you want a fixed sequence to run in order and repeat. The countdown is simply another media item between the program videos.

  1. Install OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  2. Prepare the countdown file. Make or obtain a rendered countdown video for the break length you want. Matching its resolution and frame rate to the rest of the program can help keep the sequence consistent. Check its audio, duration, and final frame before adding it; OBS does not validate that the file matches your other clips.
  3. Add the playlist in OBS. In your scene, add a VLC Video source and add the program videos and countdown clip in the intended order. Put the countdown item between the videos it should separate. Enable playlist looping if the sequence should repeat, and leave shuffle off if order matters. OBS documents playlist and looping controls in its Media Sources guide.
  4. Send OBS output to YouTube. Use the stream setup and connection details shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube documents HLS as one possible encoder protocol, with its own requirements and higher latency than RTMP; adding a countdown is not a reason by itself to change protocols. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
  5. Rehearse the complete loop. Check the end of each video, the countdown’s picture and audio, the transition into the next video, and the return from the last playlist item to the first. Confirm the result in YouTube’s broadcast output, not just OBS preview. OBS recommends testing before a first live stream in its Overview Guide.

Method 2: Use a separate countdown scene

A separate scene is useful when the break needs a different background, overlay, or timer design. It offers more flexibility than a rendered clip, but it does not automatically solve the scene-switch trigger.

  1. Create the break scene. Add a Media Source for a countdown clip, a text source, or a browser source for a timer, along with any background you want to show.
  2. Arrange the layers. OBS displays sources higher in the source list over those below. Put the countdown above the background or video it should cover. The OBS Sources Guide explains sources and layering.
  3. Set up the transition. Switch to the break scene and then to the next video using a scene transition or hotkey. OBS documents hotkeys for switching to a specific scene in its Overview Guide. Configure and test the trigger separately; do not assume playlist looping switches scenes at a video boundary.
  4. Test timing and recovery. Verify the transition at the intended boundary and run through a full playlist loop. A Stream Deck can be configured as optional manual hotkey control, but it is not required to generate the countdown and should not be treated as automatic video-end detection.

Which countdown method should you choose?

Factor Rendered countdown in playlist Separate countdown scene
How it runs A fixed clip is an ordered playlist item; looping can repeat the sequence. Requires a manual or separately configured scene-switch trigger.
Setup Prepare one clip and place it between video items. Build the scene and arrange how and when OBS switches to it and back.
Changing appearance or duration Change or replace the rendered countdown file. Can be adjusted through the scene’s sources, depending on how the timer is built.
Playlist-loop behavior The countdown remains part of the ordered sequence. Test the scene trigger across the full loop; a playlist boundary does not itself promise a scene switch.

Why YouTube’s “Take a Break” countdown is different

YouTube Live Control Room has a “Take a Break” feature with an away slate and countdown. YouTube says the break does not end automatically when the countdown reaches zero; the operator must end it in Live Control Room. It is for an operator-controlled break, not a recurring countdown inserted between items in an encoder playlist. YouTube also documents browser-source overlays and Stream Deck integration for ad insertion, which is a separate use case. Details are in YouTube’s live monetization help.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source menu: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
  • Videos play in the wrong order: Check the VLC playlist order and turn off shuffle.
  • OBS does not switch to the countdown scene at the video boundary: A separate scene needs its own configured trigger. Use a manual or otherwise separately arranged transition rather than expecting the playlist to switch scenes.
  • The countdown covers the wrong content: Reorder sources in the scene. Sources higher in the list appear over sources beneath them.
  • The live output differs from the OBS preview: Check the YouTube broadcast output during a rehearsal and verify the complete sequence, including audio and the loop boundary, before relying on it live.
