You can run a continuous YouTube Live stream from a headless Ubuntu server with FFmpeg: send a prepared video or other supported input to YouTube over RTMPS, then use systemd to start and supervise FFmpeg. No desktop or OBS is required for this file-based workflow. A service restart can recover the local encoder process, but you must also monitor YouTube’s ingest status to know whether the broadcast is reaching viewers correctly.
How the headless streaming setup works
The pipeline has three parts: a media source on an Ubuntu host, FFmpeg to encode or package that source, and YouTube’s ingest service. For a prerecorded file, FFmpeg can read it in real time and send it using the FLV muxer to YouTube’s RTMP-family endpoint. YouTube recommends the encrypted RTMPS connection; its guidance says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describe the relevant settings and transport.
This walkthrough assumes a prepared media file or files and an Ubuntu machine or VM that can stay online. Camera capture, hardware encoders and every possible input type require source-specific configuration beyond this file-based example.
Choose an Ubuntu host and prepare it
You can use an existing always-on Ubuntu machine or rent an Ubuntu VPS/cloud VM. The right choice depends on recurring cost, sustained outbound bandwidth, control of the host, power and network reliability, and how you will access logs and recover from problems. No provider-specific price or uptime guarantee is established here, so check the provider’s current specifications before relying on a VM for a continuous broadcast.

- Confirm the host can remain online and reach YouTube’s ingest service.
- Install an FFmpeg build that supports your input, chosen encoder and RTMPS. Ubuntu package builds can differ, so check the capabilities of the installed build rather than assuming support.
- Put media in a location readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
- Plan to run the encoder as an unprivileged account and keep the stream key out of source control and public logs.
For example, inspect the installed build and its available encoders with ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders. These commands show build and encoder information; they do not by themselves prove that a particular input or RTMPS connection will work.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube notes that the ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default, so select and use the RTMPS URL specifically.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not paste a real key into a public script, repository, support post or example command.
Use the endpoint and key assigned to the scheduled/live stream rather than assuming an endpoint from another configuration. See YouTube’s instructions for streaming with an encoder.
Choose output settings that fit YouTube and your connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance, checked in 2026, lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for video, AAC or MP3 for audio, a maximum frame rate of 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds). For stereo audio it lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps bitrate. Its H.264 bitrate figures below are platform recommendations, not a test of your Ubuntu host or network. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a production stream.

For a single prerecorded file, the basic command pattern below uses real-time input pacing and FLV output. Replace the endpoint and file path with your own values. Keep the stream key out of shell history and process listings where possible; for a durable setup, store secrets with appropriately restricted permissions rather than embedding them in a publicly visible command.
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4

This is an illustrative 720p30 H.264-style output target at YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommended video bitrate; it is not a universally tested Ubuntu command. Confirm that the input dimensions, frame rate, codecs, FFmpeg build and chosen YouTube endpoint are compatible. The two-second GOP shown by -g 60 assumes 30 frames per second; if you change the frame rate, calculate the GOP accordingly. Use a bitrate suitable for the available sustained upload capacity.

FFmpeg documents -re for reading an input at native real-time rate and the FLV muxing pattern for streaming. The exact media and output options depend on the source and YouTube configuration; consult FFmpeg’s protocol documentation and validate the resulting stream in Live Control Room.
Loop or playlist media continuously
A single-file loop or multi-file playlist needs more care than adding a loop flag blindly. File durations, timestamp continuity, differing codecs or dimensions, transitions, and audio/video synchronization can affect whether a sequence plays cleanly. FFmpeg supports loop and concat approaches, but there is no single universally certified playlist command for every collection of files. Build and test the input sequence with your actual media, verify timestamps and synchronization, and confirm that YouTube receives continuous video and audio.

Watch both sides of the connection: local service state and YouTube’s incoming stream status and health indicators. An active local process only means FFmpeg is running. YouTube’s stream health can report configuration issues such as unsupported codecs, missing audio or video, excessive audio channels, bitrate problems, or keyframe intervals longer than four seconds. Its API describes stream statuses including active, ready and inactive, and health states. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| SSL error or connection timeout | Confirm you copied the RTMPS URL, not the ordinary RTMP URL, and that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube says to try port 443 if an SSL error remains while the server URL is correct. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported codec or missing audio/video | Check the selected video and audio codecs, input streams, audio channel count and output configuration against YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| YouTube flags bitrate or keyframe problems | Recheck CBR, the bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, and the keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and identifies intervals longer than four seconds as a health issue. |
| Video is sparse or viewers buffer | Check YouTube’s ingest health, FFmpeg logs, host CPU load and sustained network upload. These are diagnostic areas to investigate, not a diagnosis of a particular failure. |
| systemd says the service is active, but the stream is unhealthy | Use YouTube’s stream status and health information as well as local logs; a running process does not establish successful platform ingest. |
Continuous-stream limits to account for
The configuration described here does not establish a maximum continuous broadcast duration or how YouTube will handle archive/VOD retention for very long streams. Check current YouTube help and policy information for the stream format and account you plan to use. Also ensure that the media you broadcast is yours or that you have the necessary rights; YouTube’s ingest accepting a signal does not establish that its content complies with copyright or other platform rules.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an Ubuntu host and FFmpeg service, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos.
