You can use Make and Slack to automate website change alerts, but Make’s published template checks fetched page content—it does not establish pixel-by-pixel visual comparison. The workflow retrieves a page, compares it with a stored baseline, filters noise, and posts meaningful changes to Slack. To detect layout changes, you need a separate screenshot-capture and image-comparison path.
What Make’s website change template monitors
Make’s Website Change Monitor and Alert template is a multi-service workflow built around website retrieval, stored history, change summarization, and Slack notifications. The listed dependencies are Airtable, a Bright Data account with a Web Unlocker zone, an Anthropic API key, and a Slack workspace. Its documented comparison is based on fetched HTML/content, with Claude summarizing meaningful changes and Airtable retaining snapshots and summaries.
That is content monitoring, not proof of a visual difference. A page can change its text without changing its layout, or change its layout while the fetched text stays the same. Make also lists a URL screenshot action in its HTML/CSS to Image and HTTP integration, but the reviewed documentation does not establish a turnkey screenshot-diff module in the template.
Choose the right monitoring path
| Approach | What it can reveal | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP/content comparison | Changes in the response body, such as wording, links, or page content that appears in fetched HTML. | A basic request may not reflect JavaScript-rendered content or the browser’s final layout. |
| Rendered-page screenshot comparison | Changes in captured appearance, such as positioning, styling, or visible elements, if your workflow actually compares successive screenshots. | Capturing an image alone is not comparison; you must retain images and implement a visual-diff step and noise controls. |
Make’s HTTP app can make HTTPS requests. GET retrieves the response body and information; HEAD requests status and headers without the body, but some servers may not support HEAD. For JavaScript-heavy pages or sites that resist ordinary requests, the template uses Bright Data Web Unlocker, which requires its own account and configuration.

Build content-change alerts in Make
- Choose pages and a cadence. Put target URLs in Airtable or another list that your scenario can read. The Make template recommends checking every 24 hours; treat that as its suggested schedule, not a universal interval. Choose a faster cadence only when the page’s importance justifies the extra requests and processing.
- Retrieve each page. Add an HTTP request step and issue GET for the page content you intend to inspect. Use the template’s Bright Data Web Unlocker path when ordinary retrieval does not return usable content. Do not assume an HTTP response is equivalent to what a browser displays.
- Establish and store a baseline. Save the observation and its timestamp in Airtable, as the template does. On the first successful run, store the baseline and send no change alert: there is no earlier state to compare against.
- Compare and filter noise. Compare the new observation against the stored one, ignoring predictable or irrelevant differences such as timestamps, build IDs, and non-meaningful HTML changes. The template uses Claude to summarize changes and Airtable to preserve the snapshot and summary. Review what your chosen comparison treats as meaningful; a summary is not a verification of visual layout.
- Send a useful Slack message. Use Make’s HTTP and Slack integration to post the page URL, check time, concise change summary, and a link to the retained evidence. A notification should make it possible to investigate without treating every alert as a confirmed important change.
- Keep failures separate from “no change.” Route fetch errors, timeouts, and scenario failures to a distinct error notification or log. A failed retrieval is not evidence that the page remained unchanged.
How to monitor actual visual or layout changes
If the question is “did the page look different?”, compare rendered screenshots rather than relying on response text. Make’s screenshot-related integration documents a URL screenshot action, but the template does not document an image-diff stage. Treat visual monitoring as a separate workflow that you assemble and validate.
- Capture a consistent view. Use the same URL, viewport, browser/rendering conditions, and wait behavior for each observation. If the page loads content after initial navigation, capture only after it has settled; otherwise timing variation may look like a change.
- Retain the prior image. Store each baseline screenshot and its capture time in a location your scenario can retrieve. Keep enough history to inspect what triggered an alert.
- Compare images explicitly. Add an image-difference step or service, set a threshold appropriate to the page, and filter known volatile regions where feasible. Make’s URL capture action by itself does not establish that any comparison occurs.
- Alert with evidence. Send the URL, check time, difference result, and links to both the previous and current captures. A visual alert should let the recipient judge whether the difference is meaningful.
For a rendered-page capture API option, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its capture can provide an image for a separate comparison step; do not treat the returned screenshot alone as a diff. ScreenshotNeo removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, which can reduce recurring capture noise, but the comparison logic and threshold remain your responsibility.
Credentials, permissions, and operational limits
- External services: The published Make template lists Airtable, Bright Data Web Unlocker, Anthropic, and Slack. Each adds a credential, configuration point, and possible service dependency.
- Slack authorization: Connect the Slack account through Make and confirm workspace permissions. Make’s Slack app documentation notes the account requirement and workspace restrictions; an administrator’s policies can affect setup.
- Webhook logs: Make’s webhook documentation says webhook logs are retained for 3 days, or 30 days for Enterprise. These figures apply to webhook logs, not necessarily scenario history or evidence stored in Airtable or another service.
- Incoming webhook rate: Make documents a limit of 300 incoming webhook requests per 10-second interval. This is a platform limit, not a recommended monitoring cadence.
- Evidence retention: Decide how long to keep snapshots and screenshots in your storage system. The webhook-log retention period does not set retention for external records.
Troubleshooting
The scenario reports no change, but the page looks different
Your HTTP fetch may not include JavaScript-rendered elements, or your comparison may exclude the changed content. Check the actual response and comparison inputs. If layout is what matters, use rendered screenshots and an explicit image comparison.

Every check triggers an alert
Inspect the stored snapshots for unstable values such as timestamps, rotating identifiers, or changing markup. Normalize or exclude predictable noise before summarization, and confirm the baseline is updated only after a successful comparison.

The fetched page is blank, incomplete, or blocked
Distinguish retrieval failure from an unchanged page. Check the HTTP result and whether the target depends on browser rendering or blocks ordinary requests. The Make template’s Bright Data Web Unlocker route is its documented option for pages needing more robust retrieval; it requires a Bright Data account and zone.
Slack messages do not arrive
Verify the connected Slack account, channel selection, and workspace authorization. Check the scenario’s execution and error path as well as any webhook handling; do not infer a successful notification from a successful page fetch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Make monitor a website for changes and alert me in Slack?
Yes. Make publishes a multi-service template that retrieves page content, stores history, summarizes changes, and sends Slack notifications.
Does Make’s template detect pixel-level visual changes?
The documented template compares fetched HTML/content; it does not establish pixel-level screenshot comparison. A screenshot capture step needs a separate image-diff implementation to detect visual differences.
